A Christams Festival - Arranged for Horn Quartet by Everett Davis

In the spirit of the holidays I decided to arrange part of Leroy Anderson's A Christmas Festival for horn quartet. Transforming a full orchestra piece into a horn quartet and recording all four parts of the horn quartet were both fun challenges. Merry Christmas everyone!

Commissioned by the Georgia Music Educators Association District 8 Honor Band, this lyrical work uses flowing melodic lines and creative scoring to create an effective setting for young bands. Sam skillfully alternates sections of light and delicate writing with full broad-sounding chorale passages in a work that definitely sounds more impressive and complex than its easy level would indicate.
I remember playing this as the first chair trumpet in the final concert of 8th grade in middle school. my director added in a retardando for the last chords right at where the french horns have that little break. the entire song felt magical, but the end really felt like a surreal wrap on that chapter of my life. i haven’t experienced many things that can replicate the feeling playing this song made me feel. i’m a senior in university now, and i still find myself coming back to listen to this song every once in a while. thanks razo, you’re truly amazing!
be honest, the first time you rehearsed 3:10 gave you chills
We played this year for UIL division 1😎

This sounds SO GOOD
Me:looks through the comments talking about first instruments Also me:no love for second instruments
OMG I literally just just scrolled all the way down my playlist and found this; it was my favorite and I played it in 9th like 8 years ago 🥰😭
My 8th grade band played this. We sucked lol
i played the cymbals in this. not the cool rolling part, the tapping part. the best/worst part is i had 8 measures of music in a 100+ measure song. and they were all the same melody. too bad covid got our UIL canceled. i look back and i find it funny. i hated band at the time and hated playing this piece, but now i wish i could be back in 7th grade playing this during 4th period and truly enjoy it.
How fun! Do you have sheet music of this arrangement available anywhere?
I wasn't sure I'd have anything saved from all that time ago, but was able to find two pdfs! One is the first horn part as it appears in this video. The other is the score and parts of the whole arrangement, but it's one step higher. The original piece starts in d major instead of c major, but I eventually transposed it down a step because I didn't want to play a million high A's while making the recordings. Anyway, here's a link to both pdfs: drive.google.com/drive/folders/10c2OtOk6v2p0DwXXNCG9vyJlhXPHQrIf?usp=sharing Now that this piece is on my mind, maybe I'll finish arranging the rest of it for this December...
A beautiful and inspired work! My spirit was lifted.
I would be playing this if my band teacher didn’t assign me the “take a break” role. But hey I think this song reminds me of a some futuristic/modern city.
Clap clap clap.
