But you guys are saying that it would be best to just bring cash (u.s. dollars) and bring to this exchange place (or a similar money exchanger) and they'll just give you your money back in IDR currency in exchange? That seems pretty smooth.

Don't order same menu, you can buy 2 different food and then ask the staff an empty plate + spoon + folk (in bahasa : bisa minta piring kosong satu). So you can share food with your wife. There is no extra cost / charge to borrow an empty plate. I'm sorry my English are bad 😢
