Wolfe Tone succeeds in persuading the French to support the invasion of Ireland in 1796. This painting by Louis-Philippe Crépin shows General Hoche and his staff about to board the lugger that would take them to the flagship. This attempt was defeated by the weather but was followed by the better known invasion of 1798. This led to the capture of the leaders of the United Irishmen and Wolfe Tone's suicide after he had been condemned to death.
