The Elemental Model of a Modern Major-General
How to learn the names of all the elements in the Periodic Table with The Major-General!
Featuring Tom Lehrer's ingenious setting of "The Elements" to Arthur Sullivan's "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" sung by... The Major-General himself!
There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium,
And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium,
And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium,
And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium,
Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium,
And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium,
And gold and protactinium and indium and gallium,
And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium.
There's yttrium, ytterbium, actinium, rubidium,
And boron, gadolinium, niobium, iridium,
And strontium and silicon and silver and samarium,
And bismuth, bromine, lithium, beryllium, and barium.
There's holmium and helium and hafnium and erbium,
And phosphorus and francium and fluorine and terbium,
And manganese and mercury, molybdenum, magnesium,
Dysprosium and scandium and cerium and cesium,
And lead, praseodymium, and platinum, plutonium,
Palladium, promethium, potassium, polonium,
And tantalum, technetium, titanium, tellurium,
And cadmium and calcium and chromium and curium.
There's sulfur, californium, and fermium, berkelium,
And also mendelevium, einsteinium, nobelium,
And argon, krypton, neon, radon, xenon, zinc, and rhodium,
And chlorine, carbon, cobalt, copper, tungsten, tin, and sodium.
These are the only ones of which
The news has come to Ha'vard,
And there may be many others
But they haven't been discavard!
Additional elements discovered since 1959:
There's bohrium, seaborgium, lawrencium, livermorium,
And dubnium, darmstadtium, roentgenium, rutherfordium,
Ununtrium, meitnerium, flerovium, ununpentium,
Copernicium, ununoctium, and hassium, ununseptium!

This is what I imagine what the Major General does on his off days
Would you consider doing this with the "Russian Major General" lyrics that are circulating about?
Mmmmm ununpentium. Reminds me of the intel bunnymen
Fantastic
They should have taught us this in sixth grade instead of making us rote memorize it.
so this is what english sounds like to non-speakers
I am the very model of a modern Major-General, I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral, I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical; I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical, I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical, About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news, With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse. I'm very good at integral and differential calculus; I know the scientific names of beings animalculous: In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern Major-General. I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's; I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox, I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus, In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous; I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies, I know the croaking from The Frogs of Aristophanes! Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore, And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore. Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform, And tell you ev'ry detail of Caractacus's uniform: In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern Major-General. In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin", When I can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a Javelin, When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at, And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat" When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery, When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee. For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury, Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century; But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
This was my school's anthem
Fascinating. Live long and prosper.
OMG THIS IS FROM BREAKING BAD
Winston Churchill, it’s from the prequel series, “Better Call Saul”. Great little scene with Gale, the I’ll-fated chemist.
Carolyn Hill yeah, that’s what I meant, lol, thanks, good series 🙏
*blinks* wish they was in order XD

disappearing spoon brought me here
It would probably be better if the elements were in order.
Your wish is granted in ASAP Science's elements song.
Better call saul brought me here
Gale brought me here
My choir in High School had a talent show every year and it was tradition to have someone do this each time. This was great!
Terrible. Sounds like he's singing with a potato in his mouth. Tom Lehrer will not be moving over anytime soon.
Imagine if the Pirate King, Samuel, and the Pirates suddenly stormed in and interrupted the Major General's lesson
Ayntemownee, osenac, oluminim, silaynium.

Tom Lehrer
Thanks for making that extra verse!! Great video :)
My school just did "Pirates of Penzance" the past three days, and I know both the original and this version by heart. Brilliant!
