Hello. Thanks for yet another good video. In a past video, you slightly touched upon pitch accent with numbers and counters. This gets complicated as the pitch vacillates with the numbers, sometimes depending on the variation in pronunciation of the "measure/counter" word. For three "さん", it ends high, correct? If so, is it always the case that when counting numbers, "1,2,3,etc.", the pitch is an "atamadaka" pattern for the beginning low numbers? Below in brackets is what I copied and pasted. I await your expertise on this matter. Thank you. [When you count, it goes いち1 にぃ1 さん1 しぃ1 … じゅう1 じゅういち3, じゅうに03, じゅうさん3, じゅうし03, じゅうご1, じゅうろく, じゅうしち04 or じゅうしち3, じゅうはち043 , 19 and 20 are as above.]

I think "rude" is relative and subjective here... as she has mentioned, people definitely use every one of these phrases, and in more casual settings, the "rude" way is still used *very* often... even the other examples she gave are not all 100% substitutes that should be used in every case, they all have their appropriate time and place that it should be used, so I feel it's a bit disingenuous to just flat out call any of them rude when they are all used all the time, but in different situations.

Hello. For nouns with flat style, when you add です, the pitch should drop after で, as in 学生です. However, provided nothing comes after です(like a final particle, よ or ね), then I have heard that many keep the flat style (no drop at all). Also, for verbs with -ます (nothing coming after nor any conjugated forms), the drop occurs after ま。Again, some keep it flat with no drop. If this is the case, then when did this change occur? Is it now an acceptable, alternate pitch accent pronunciation? Thank you.

Can you make a video about counting accents? I always heard the difference between them "十三"や"十四"や"十五"や"四十"や"五十"... "一時"や"一時間"..."九円"や"十円"...but didn't know the rules about their accents. I have not seen anyone working on the accent of counting even though it is used a lot in everyday life. especially counting money. Thanks a lot.

As for なadjectives.they have the same accent patterns with the nouns without な For Example きれい HLL きれいな HLLL しずか HLL しずかな HLLL あんぜん LHHH あんぜんな LHHHH にぎやか LHLL にぎやかな LHLLL じょうず(tail high)LHH じょうずな LHHL Anout 大きなand小さな, They don't consist of "noun +な", They have own accent pattern. HLLL

@@SeizeJapanese Thank you. What was throwing me off a little bit were the two words 大きな and 小さな to capture the rule. So 好きな, the way I have heard it, would be LHL (tail high). Thanks, again.

Once again, a great video. You are doing a great service by tackling pitch accent following suffixes/particles/tag words, and the like. The topic is quite complex, and it validates the fact that mastery of Japanese pitch accent is much more intricate than the rules of pronunciation in Chinese and Korean, even though there are indeed some difficult aspects in these languages as well. On another note, how do -NA adjectives operate under pitch accent? Compare 大きい vs. 大きな whereby the latter form with -NA is atamadaka style (retracting pitch accent) when compared to 大きい which has kifuku style (nakadaka).

I was going to begin giving you some slightly more natural english at around 7:20 but I'm realizing it's very complicated to explain. I'm going to try anyway 7:22 "she has a great way of singing" sounds natural. some alternatives that I think are also natural is "her way of singing is great", changing the subject from the girl to the singing, and "The way she sings is great", taking notice that if you were watching footage of a dead singer you'd change that structure to "the way she sang was great" 7:28 "The way of singing is really great" Sounds unnatural. I think natives will tend to use a possessive for 'way of' so "her way of speaking", "his way of writing", "their way of working", "it's way of breaking" etc.. 7:34 "it's a great way of singing" sounds unnatural. The natural structure will be "It's a great way to sing". the verb tends to become infinitive when we're talking about a general usage of the verb instead of a specific person or object. examples: "That's no way to live", "I read this article online. It's about different ways to cook a steak" sometimes the alternative structure still sounds natural though. "We've got a food diary on our fridge. It's a great way of making sure we stay honest about our diet." "We've got a food diary on our fridge. It's a great way to make sure we stay honest about our diet." these both sound totally natural. I don't know how to explain when it doesn't other than speaking the language for my whole life :( sorry 7:43 "You have a funny way of dancing" I didn't think this sounded too unnatural until I showed my mom and she pointed out some ways most people would say it. We think the most natural options are "the way you dance is funny" and even just "you dance funny" << some words just somehow get away with breaking english rules. you shouldn't use an adjective directly after a verb like this so the "real" english is "you dance funnily" but sounds completely unnatural. I think some dictionaries consider funny an adverb anyway, albeit informally. 8:14 "The way of speaking proves it's a fraud" is unnatural. once again I want to give 'the way' to some person or object. "Her way of speaking", "The way she speaks", I hope that makes sense. I think in english we just tend to demand that an entity remains visible in the sentence at almost every moment even when context keeps it obvious. I see the cult leader on screen, we're talking about her, and even then the sentence "The way of speaking proves it's a fraud" makes my subconscious english brain go "Whose way of speaking? We should clarify in the sentence structure that we're talking about 'her way'". I hope any of my ramblings proved at all useful and I want to clarify that your english is completely grammatically correct if only unnatural at times.
