Weekend Walkaround #3 - CHRISTMAS EDITION!!
Join me with a bit of Christmas Spirit on my (roughly) weekly walk around Griffetts Garden to see what's really happening in the patch this week! I cover quite a lot in this episode!!
This week we check the progress of the corn before venturing into the main Tomato and Capsicum patch and sharing my lack of effort in there lately. We look at the Butternut Pumpkin plant that is doing very well, loaded with fruit, and I explain a bit about the birds and the bees of pollination. Moving on, we have a quick look at the chillies.
Zucchini grows that fast that they will almost always make an appearance and I provide more detail about pollination here as well. Hopefully this goes a long way to answering many of your questions about failing fruit on your plants.
We have a very quick look at the patch of Bush Beans, the Potatoes, Blueberries, some of the Herbs
We detour a bit this week and say G'day to the chickens!
Then we venture outside and revisit the new Pumpkin patch and the progress of our "Queensland Kent's" followed by an update on the new Corn and finally the Cucumbers!
Wishing you all a fantastic Christmas (if you celebrate it like we do here) and a very safe New Year.
Thanks so much for tuning in to Griffetts Garden!! Your support is always amazing!!

Some would say trellised, but in the same way as I did for the tomatoes, cucumbers can be staked and pruned for an increased yield and better quality. I learned this technique from my dad and brother in their commercial hothouses where they grew thousand of Lebanese cucumbers. Applying it to the backyard garden is f...

Today is a little different, i hope you enjoy it! So .... the gardening gods don't always smile on us. In this video, I replant those that were destroyed and give them a good dose of Seasol to settle them in. Sadly, most replaceme...

Your garden looking healthy 🇳🇿
Merry Xmas ⛄🦌🎅🤶🎄
Thanks, and to you!
Awesome garden. Great variety of plants. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thank you! You too!
Garden looks great, mate. Merry Christmas to you and your's. Cheers.
Thanks, you too!
Kangaroos have eaten all our corn
Oh no!! Sounds like a bigger fence coming up?
Wow those pumpkins are looking fantastic. Tomatoes looking good too. Great colour on those eggplant.
Thanks so much
Merry Christmas. I use coconut coir when topping up with compost of my raised beds but I’m a bit of a lazy gardener 😂 and buy the already rehydrated coconut coir bags I find it helps retain the water in the summer and also the worms love it
I first came across these coco choir bricks with worm farming as they make a great bedding for compost worms. I also use coconut coir in potting mix so it doesn't dry out so quickly, and to add to garden beds for the same reason. Thanks for the video.
It will be good to see how you go with the coconut choir. I've been considering using it for my raised beds for a while.
Wet the coconut brick slowly, and it’ll grow into a huge amount. 👍
Good to know!
Congratulations, I remember that feeling when I got my first 100. Here’s to hundreds if not thousands more! 🎉
Awesome! Thank you!
You look like you ride motorbikes! Do you also do riding videos? Your sure where I wanna be in few years time
Thanks @varunmandava, I appreciate your kind words. I did ride but not for many years.
@ keep positing and keep motivating us
Nice one, Congratulations 😀 Love your videos, your garden looks great and I check regularly to see if there are any updates.
Congrats on your milestone and thank you for the great content
Loved the tomato videos! Can't wait for more! Congrats
Mate no worries, well DONE... keep em real... to have a natural crisma... it has set you on a path.... lol between the weeds... keep em coming
I think i get withdrawl between video uploads.....
Me too mate! It's great finding channels like this one... I'm envious - the birds and possums carry off anything I try growing here in Qld (edit for spelling)
Thanks so much, this is a really helpful video
👍
Tomatoes are looking great!! 👍
One of your best videos yet. Good to see your pumpkins and tomatoes are going well 🙂
Thanks so much! 😊
Thank you ☺
Love this style of video I felt like I was there walking around with you in your garden ❤
I'm so glad you enjoyed the garden tour! It’s always nice to share the beauty of nature with everyone.
Its like watching an episode of "Murder She Wrote" trying to figure out the culprit killing your plants.... Love it... Edge of my seat.... I cant wait to see what the real culprit was ..
I doesn't have to be a flashy garden, it is what it is. You're being real and to be admired. I love your tomato beds. It's a smart way of eradicating weeds and retaining moisture. Well, with the help of the drip line too. I'm yet to plant out my tomatoes for the season. Oh no, naughty birds. As long you have the stems am sure they will come back up. Cut the bottom of some old garden pots, stick a small stick near the plants and pop the pot on it. It will help your plants to recover and put on some more growth and hopefully go on and do its thing. Stick some bamboo sticks around the garden beds and pop a plastic bottle on it. When the wind blows it will rattle. I'm sure it will work with cans too. It's not a good look for the garden but if them birds leave your plants alone, it's a winner! :) I have my fingers crossed that your plants will recover. Cheers!
I'm growing pumpkins and my watermelons on my lawn area. Well, more sun around that area so why not, eh LOL I'm not good at growing blueberries. and raspberries maybe one day. Your videos are fantastic though might invest in a better mic unless I'm going deaf in my 56 year old age, why the volume is a bit low. You have a unique way of gardening and talking about it. I say 'unique' means, it's not polished for the sake of filming. Your way, many gardeners out there can relate and would come back to watch your stuff. It's fairdinkum content and wonderful to watch. You make us Aussie gardeners proud. You don't want to be a sheep and do what other garden UA-camrs do out there, it gets boring after a while. Great video shared.
Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement @wildchook745 !!
Just paused the video at the mushroom compost, just saying do some research on how its made... i also will never use it again, remember its the waste from the mushroom beds, the mushrooms have sucked all the nutrients out, now the waste needs a couple of years to further compost down ,, i have been sucked into the one, not once, or twice but this year as well, i re loaded my tomatoes pots with mushroom compost in October, i cannot grow a tomatoes this years, im about to rip out the soil out of the pots and reset, my cucumbers are in very small pots, on rafts over water, coco with fertilizer and worm castings, i get around 10 cucumbers a week, i reckon over 100 this year alone .. absolutely boooming with cucumbers, strawberrys, and waiting for dwaf beans, i plant 3 variety's together... yumm
Sorry to hear your experience with the mushroom compost @wizzard_ponics. I didn't get this lot to add organic matter, not so much for nutrient content and you may have seen i add all sorts of nutrient sources when i plant. However, i will be reassessing my use of it next year and to be totally honest, i prefer horse manure. I just couldn't get hold of any, well, definitely not enough, this year. Sadly, when building up new, or replenishing old beds that need quite a bit of material, we are kind of tied to the Garden Supplies places and mushroom compost in bulk, should be a reasonable mix into their ordinary 'garden soils'. We don't always win. Keep up your great work!
gid ya..
Nice looking tomato plants 🇳🇿🌱
Thanks for the video. Ive been waiting for more Aussie growers to show up so that I have a veggie garden to compare to and learn from.
Glad it was helpful!
I don't think it's a virus I think it's the Mushroom Compost from Canberra Sand and Gravel don't think it's the nitrogen but possibly the pH and we have this on our tomatoes as well, where we also put down some Gypsum the tomatoes didn't have the leaf curl issue
Super helpful comment @justinarnold7725. I have s garden pH meter so i'll see if it still works!
Is this cockatoos?? They are absolute vandals...
I don't think so @alisonburgess345. I'm thinking more like Magpies or Parrots.
Nice Video 💕💕💕💕🥰🥰🥰🥰
Nice Video Wowo❤❤❤❤❤❤
Would it not be worth putting a loost net over the top for a week or two until they get settled in....
That's the gamble - all the nets are in use on other things...
Can I ask did you put cardboard under the soil then place the mat over the top? Also what black mat did you use? Thanks
That was just too funny... Wrong Hole.....
What part of the country are you from mate?
ACT, Thanks for watching!
I really like your Growing beds.
Thank you!
How long has it been since you had rain there... The soil is already powder dry...
Welcome to Australia @JohnWDoyle-hm2xs, the driest (inhabited continent) on the planet... Mid-October was our last few drops.
Thank you. I learnt some new things about pumpkins from this. I haven't grown them before, but I'm planning to plant a seedling I've grown from seed. All the best 🙂
woo hoo good work so far...subscriber no.48... Just comment, and its my opinion only, 1. coffee grounds is a growth inhibitor until they have passed through a worm gut .. so compost only.. 2, eggshells, need to be cooked at 200 plus for 4 hours then put through a blender to turn into powder, them dissolve in vinegar for a few days, back into pot a dry out... other wise they wont be plant available in about 10 years even if crushed... again they need to pass through a worn gut to be available for plants, you added blood n bone, when they process the bones, they heat till about 400 before putting through a crusher...
and i grew my (our own tomatoes cucumbers) since i was a kid with my parents.. we added lime back then for calcium, lots of blood n bone, but it was added to compost bin after tomatoes were out, so had all winter to be processed by worms.. this year hard to grow tomatoes, but in completely over loaded with cucumber , picking them every weekend
Yes, 48!! It's humbling to see you all wanting to see what I get up to in Griffetts Garden. Thanks so much for your support!! Good extra detail on the amendments. Aeration and any extra material all adds up for the greater too.
@@GriffettsGarden Looks forward to watchin you grow your youtube channel, you have a natural crisma, i tried to start one but my camera skill are shit, and i speak to fast.. and out of sync i go side ways../lol if the universe wants me to build a new aquaponics system i film it, but naw i think the universe done not want me too.
can hardly hear you mate needed to turn my volume up flat out, then an add blasts me ears lol
Sorry to hear that @markwales2973, volume seems fine on my end, but i don't place the ads so can't speak to them. Thanks so much for watching!
Gawd Darn Birds
Can you help? lol
Great job, hopefully you get plenty of tomatoes 🍅
Sweet video to relax to, with my coffee. I can see you had a blank slate yard and are developing it into a beautiful food garden. Great stuff. I'm in tropics and so therefore have problems with early flowering of leafies. Particularly Basil was almost not worth growing, then I found a variety that works in my environment. Experiment with a few varieties. Cheers
Can you do a simple and cheap irrigation setup, please. I love rhubarb. I'm hot and cold growing strawberries. Some seasons they work great and some, nope. I would love to have a chook or two to eat the garden waste. Those nets are great. Love your You are right about the kale as an aphid deterrent plant.
Thanks @wildchook745. Some seasons are definitely better than others! This year is probably the driest in the past 4 years for us. I'll see what i can do for irrigation.
Fantastic work mate! Reminds me of my back yard. I've squeezed over 100 tomato plants into my backyard this year 😅 Regards from a Horticulturalist from Ballarat Vic. You've got a subscriber out of me that's for sure. Keen for updates through the season
Thanks @McSweld!! I truly appreciate your support and kind comment! It’s great to connect with another horticultural enthusiast. I’ll definitely keep the updates coming!
Looking forward to hearing about the Aussie chook breed in the future. Nice looking birds.
Good stuff. Well done 😊
