A Much A Much Overdue Knitting Update ft. Some Hot Takes / By a Thread Knits
Hello hello,
It's been awhile (again lol)! How is everyone doing? What are we working on? How are things? Anywho, today I have a few very exciting (and often infuriating) finished objects to share, a new work in progress, and some yarn acquisitions. I also discuss a yarn festival, Sacred Sheep, that I went to in Portland during the first week of November. While I have some constructive criticisms, I know many people who went had a great time! Once again, my opinions are just that; mine. I mean absolutely no disrespect towards the organizers of the event. I can't imagine how much work it takes to put on an event like Sacred Sheep. That said, being honest with you guys is always going to be my number one priority! If you're considering traveling for this event next year or are deciding between a West Coast fiber event to travel to, I want you to have a variety of opinions to reference to help you decide for yourself if this event seems right for you.
While I try not to be overly negative on my channel, sometimes things just don't work for me! And that's okay!!! We are allowed to have differing opinions in this community and above all I want to foster an environment of honesty and transparency.

not having an original thought is so real bc girl same if I like a pattern and color I’m doing it
You are funny! I get a kick out of watching your videos!!
i’m literally making a pattern for ornaments/ charms because i suffer from the weird amount of peer gynt
It’s so important to remember that we are not alone in this affliction 🫡
If you need another lovely cantaloupe colored yarn, Wandering Flock's Apricot is also pretty darn cantaloupe-y!
Omg just looked it up- it’s PERFECT! If my swatch with the vintage yarn isn’t quite right I’ll def order that. I WILL HAVE MY CANTALOUPE CARDIGAN 😤🍈
First of all, I love your energy, and your bangs. Not that you need the validation from an internet stranger ✌ Second, I live in Portland and had NO idea that Ritual Dyes had a fiber library. Love it. Will be dropping by soon with some donations, and fingers crossed for a sweater's quantity of burnt orange Suri 😳
Manifesting some burnt orange suri for you 🙏🧶 the fiber library giveth
I'm Portuguese, yet for some reason you've tried more yarn from my country than I have 😂😂😂
lol I highly recommend!
You're fair and honest about your opinions, not negative, which is very much appreciated! Now I need you to attend Rhinebeck and report back your honest experience 😂
Those apple cider doughnuts might skew my perception of the event if we’re being so honest lol
At my local yarn festival, the entry for the day is included, for the day you book a class (hands on too). Not going to claim is perfect, but at least this is nicely handled. Often they is no entrance fee, or just a really low.
This seems much more reasonable!!!!
1st - LOVE MABELANDJESSKNITS!!!! Everyone who watches this should go check out their stitch markers! 2nd - I totally agree with you about sacred sheep! I think it was less bad for me because I live in Portland and went with friends, but there really wasn’t much to do besides sit in the community tent and chat with friends. I think it would have been better if they had advertised it like a small festival - but all their advertising made it seem like this huge thing people should travel for!
1st- YES GO CHECK THEM OUT THEY ARE GORGEOUS 2nd- it is incredibly validating that you also felt this way!! Also big agree on the advertising; it felt slightly misleading tbh!
Cut your bangs! It would look so cute and if you hate it they grow out really fast. Also, a hat or fingerless mitts wpuld be good for the left over yarn from the Amy sweater
I was thinking possibly an Oslo for the leftovers… or perhaps… two Oslo’s even….
Wait, thank you so much for this information on the halibut sweater... I was wanting to cast it on but after hearing what you had to say I just don't think it would be worth the time! Thank you for sharing and being honest about this. It's so rare to get honest feedback like this!
It’s such a bummer because the colorwork motif is such a slay 😔 but at some point you’ve gotta weigh if it’s worth your sanity. Luckily I didn’t have much of that to begin with so it was a wash for me 🙂↕️
The bang thing is hilarious! I love watching you! Thank you for always keeping things light and being true to you 🩷
Wait Shala I am fangirling right now…. I take my mini bewitched boxy bag with me literally everywhere I go it’s easily one of my best knitting related purchases. I can’t believe you watch my videos??? Hi???? Oh my god??? 💖💖
“I’ve never had an original thought in my life” really spoke to me as I’m knitting a sweater in the exact sample yarn and color
I feel so seen right now 🫶
It's totally fair to "be negative" about something that was negative. The forced positivity has to stop. And I was knitting on a Jason's Cashmere Hat, presumably for my brother (if it fits him)
your curtain bangs are cute and this matcha yarn color is gorg on you
you made me laugh so much! Thanks for that, I didn't realize how much I needed it! Your projects are great too ;)
I wanna learn fair isle/colorwork SO bad but continental knitting makes me wanna bite the big one and i do not know how to overcome this
I tragically have no advice as I am a day one continental knitter. All I can offer you is the reassurance that you are very brave and also an inspiration to us all
Your comedy in this is wonderful
In the middle of a power outage using the last of my phone battery to watch your new video! 😂
You are hilarious, love your videos!
Thank you for your honest opinions I’ve wondered if it was worth it to go to Sacred Sheep. ❤❤❤
i also went to sacred sheep alone and had a great time! i met a new friend in a class with Sari Nordlund on Saturday that i spent more time with the rest of the day. i also just started knitting with random people in the hotel lobby and enjoyed that
I’m glad you had a great time!!!!! How was the class with Sari? They had really cool teachers I just wasn’t in a place to spend the additional $$
@@byathreadknits I’ve met and taken classes with Sari before and have enjoyed a lot! She is so nice and makes things so approachable
Wow the green with the EYES
Serving 👁️👄👁️
“If you’re gonna leave questionable/hateful comments, at least make them funny”. Such a small demand, yet people can’t seem to figure that out. Hahaha love the video and really appreciate your candid thoughts on what events you’d recommend. 💖
"No tea, No shade." While literally serving afternoon tea with the whole spread. I'mmmmmmm dyingggggg
But like… with peace and love 🙂↕️
@@byathreadknits so like tea with the Queen. lol All jokes aside I think not every event is for everyone and we should not have to sensor our feedback on our own experiences
Also, “Serving afternoon tea with the whole spread” will now be firmly enmeshed in my quip repertoire so thank you for that
@@byathreadknits I think I just made it up but I'm keeping it now too. <3
OMGoodness, I absolutely ADORE you my friend. 🤗 ❤ I soooo need your PetiteKnit sweater in my wardrobe! Thank you for bringing smile after smile to my face.
You’re the best ❤️❤️ definitely recommend the Amy Sweater!! Such a quick and fun project
To be so for real, I don't understand the Halibut hype. The fish thing isn't for me, which is fine because I know a lot of my aesthetic is not for others, so that's not my problem with it. But the shaping is horrendous to me. Like if you love a swancho, more power to you and I love that for you. But, it's not even sold as a swancho, it's just supposed to be a circular sweater. I think most people wouldn't choose to have armpits down to their waist or hips in a normal circular yoke sweater. So, it's just bad shaping and grading, imo.
No you’re so real for this. The swancho was my biggest fear while I was making this. I forgot to mention that I didn’t follow the sleeve decreases that the pattern recommends. I decreased every 20 rounds (I think lol) eight times. That definitely helped avoid the swancho thing. The sleeves in the pattern are wayyyyy too rapidly decreased imo. I agree with you it’s just bad shaping+grading which is super disappointing to see from such a prolific designer
I knit this sweater recently, too. I'm a really loose knitter and I think I made size 2 (I am not a tiny person either, ha, ha). What totally saved this project for me is I stumbled upon someone's notes where they ended up using a sport weight yarn instead of the DK and that totally made it work for me. Otherwise, I was really concerned with the deep yoke and I didn't want the swancho look either!!
I am knitting the halibut right now and I’m almost finished! I saw a lot about the grading of it so I just took the chart from the pattern and have done some maths to use it with another circular yoke pattern instead. I also changed it to a machine knit pattern. The baggy armpits on larger sizes are just not the vibe.
The color of your Amy is giving Scooby Doo vibes and I love it. It's Velma energy even though the color is wrong
You are the third (3rd) person to tell me this about this sweater. I wore it once with my glasses on and it was uncanny tbh
@@byathreadknits I meant it as the biggest compliment. I have not been interested in the Amy sweater for myself but I kinda want one now
I love your podcasts!! And I share your sentiment about conquering color work. I’m going to do my 2nd ever color work sweater in December and I’m excited to take it on
Ooooo which color work sweater are you starting???? I need ideas!!
The Spot Sweater by Anna Ventzel!! I’m going to do it in black and white. I originally wanted to do more of a gradient but decided to take it easy on myself
We did it. I just conquered color work too. I’m so excited. I just finished the Porch Light socks out of 52 weeks of socks book, beautiful color, work and lace combo.
WE DID IT 🎉🎉🎉
It's NEVER gonna get better than that Halibut Sweater. Whatever it took, it's freaking fabulous. If you don't get stopped every ten feet by strangers when you wear that, I hate to imagine what people will elect in Novem... oh wait
No literally, I’ve peaked 🎣
That sound byte at 7:24
A friend just shared your podcast and I am so glad she did! Love it! I had a similar conversation with friends after our weekend at Rhinebeck about vendors holding stock back. I agree that they should not! They are there to sell, not bring stuff home. If someone really wants merchandise from one vendor it makes sense they will get there early to ensure they get what they want. Vendors holding back stock risk not selling. Cakepalooza does the staggered start/pricing and I think it is very fair.
Omg tell your friend I said thanks for sharing!!!! One of my friends also brought up cakepalooza’s staggered pricing! I think it’s such a good system for timed entry; It would definitely take some of the pressure off vendors to hold back stock
“They grow up so fast… dogs you have a parasocial relationship with.” that made me laugh so hard. I do the same thing when I think I should know something while knitting. I make myself stop because, my goodness, I have wasted time. Love your channel. Become a full vlogger- I’d support your Patreon. Happy knitting 💚🧶💚
Don't worry sis, I currently hold the record for most annoying person alive, so you're good! I live on the East Coast so if I'm going to fly in for a festival, I need to know what I'm getting into. Even though I don't actually know you I trust your opinions emphatically for some reason, so I appreciate your honest reviews.
On the contrary I find you delightful! I famously loveeee east coast girlies
I absolutely adore your podcasts. Your humour is right up my alley. I love your take on things and I too get very frustrated by patterns we spend a lot of time and money on not being graded properly ( lumme ! ). Thank you for taking the time to do these!
Okay tea on the Lumme, that’s so disappointing to hear that it has similar issues to the halibut 😭
Oh no!!! I was just about to cast on the Lumme! Do you mind telling what the problems are?
@ I was using the version of the pattern I got when I purchased it. I purchased it when it first came out. The chart was wrong. After making several attempts to try to figure out what I was doing wrong I looked at the pattern again on Ravelry and saw that there were updates and the chart fix was one of them. Also the increases are odd. The right leaning and left leaning are right next to each other which would create a gap. I read through others project notes and there are supposed to be knit stitches added in but they aren’t on the chart. I have been told that not understanding that the knit stitches should be added maybe more my issue as I live in North America and there is more direction given in patterns for us but I’ve tested for designers from Finland before and haven’t encountered this but who knows.
Say it isn't so, I love Sari's patterns and her instructions have always been comprehensive yet easy to follow. I'm sad if Lumme is an exception to that.
@ this was the first of her patterns I have tried. The chart corrected if you were interested in this pattern, the increases were still the same but lots of projects on Ravelry where people wrote great notes. I have seen many of the lumme on ravelry so lots have made it successfully. It may be my lack of experience with her patterns.
wake up babe, new maddie video just dropped!!!
yaaaaay welcome back queen <3
And welcome back to you as well Queen 🙂↕️
Do whatever you want with your hair. Say sorry if you want to without being self conscious. I hate people lol
Love your humor, loved how you go about the hate comments, loved the honest review and just enjoyed the episode! Directly subscribed haha 🐑🧶
I didn't find that you were overly negative in this video. It was actually very helpfully honest. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for the validation, I was in fact still anxious about if I was too mean lol
Мэдди, спасибо за классное видео! У тебя прекрасный вкус на цвет! Тебе очень идет этот отенок зеленого❤
💚💚💚
This is my first video of yours, and you're so funny! This felt like sitting across from one another and having a good laugh and chat 😌
Omg that’s exactly how I want my videos to feel 😭😭😭 thank you sm 🩷
I love how your Halibut Sweater came out, wish I could have ran into you to say hi at Sacred Sheep!! :)
Aw wish I could have ran into you too!!!
Omg I love Kevin! But tbh I missed Lester. Oh, that’s what I named your ghost. 👻
Wait I’m obsessed with that name for him, he is SUCH a Lester
I just popped into the video and wanted to comment how happy you are to have posted! I’m in the middle of finishing my last semester of school and trying to set up a post grad plan. I love the check-ins so much while I finally get to knit. Can’t wait to watch the rest. 😌
Oh my god BEEN THERE with the last semester + trying to set up a plan… so stressful 😣 you are so brave and also well behaved, never forget that
You cracked me up. Thanks for the video. 😂
I'm sorry anyone feels the need to send any comments about your appearance. Rude! I love the Amy Sweater, especially the color. Sorry I missed you at Sacred Sheep! I agree about the booth size. I always felt in the way trying to see / buy anything.
Aw I wish we could have met up!! And right?!? I felt like such a nuisance the whole time 😭
Girl, what kind of community are you part of?! I’m seven minutes in and you’ve asked us not to get mad at your hair, not to get mad because you threw a couple PetiteKnit patterns in there, and not to get mad at how you pronounced “Matisse”. I’m not out to get ya 😳
Oh, as a foreigner living in the US, I prefer people not pronouncing my name than pronouncing it and totally destroying it. But, at the end of the day, I really don’t care. Both sets of people tried to do what they thought was most respectful and I appreciate it. Now I definitely understand what community you’re part of and it does explain your constant asking for people not to get mad at you. They are so toxic. I’m sorry. Thank you for the having the self awareness of being unable to pronounce a name and politely refuse to do it. Please continue to do what YOU think is best. Hugs
I literally almost responded to this with “I’m sorry!!” Hahahahaha I have really bad anxiety if that wasn’t completely obvious lol but people like you reminding me that I don’t need to apologize all the time genuinely do help!!! Also once someone did comment that they found my bangs “irritating” so the hair thing was unfortunately not entirely unfounded lolllll
OMG we have it at Strikke! It works up so cute and we probably aren't super far from you!
Wait what is Strikke and what do you have??? I’m intrigued
