Friday The 13th: The Comprehensive Retrospective (Part I)
Friday The 13th - one of the most iconic horror franchises to ever hit theatre screens and home video! These movies are amongst my favourite slices of slasher cinema and I'm very excited to be taking an in-depth look at the first four movies in the series!
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to cover all of these movies in a single video - but fear not! Early next year I'll be releasing similar retrospectives covering the last eight films in this series.
Introduction - 0:00
Friday The 13th (1980) - 1:35
Friday The 13th: Part II (1981) - 11:15
Friday The 13th: Part III (1982) - 20:37

Bully: Rockstar's Misunderstood Masterpiece

Bully is one of my all-time favourite games - certainly one of the best ever released for the PS2 - and I thought I'd take a little time to discuss why I believe it remains Rockstar's finest and most misunderstood game. A good retrospective on the first four. My personal favorites are Part 2 and Part 4. They're pretty tied up for me. I do have to massively disagree about Part 3. I don't think it's better than Part 2 on its best day and I may like it a little less each time I watch it. Its strengths and highlights are awesome and even iconic to the series. But for me it's a pretty boring and poorly paced entry. Sometimes I feel it may be as badly paced as the first movie. I also don't find any of the characters as interesting as the ones in Part 2. But to each their own.

    • @DouglasRobson00

Thank you! And, honestly, I get that - I do really enjoy Part 3 but I do think that Part 2 is a better constructed, more well realised film. I suppose I find Part 3 a little more consistent than Part 2 (although, as I say, the climax of Part 2 blows Part 3 out of the water, it's amazing) - but, yeah, I completely understand the preference for Part 2.

Definitely agree with the things you said about the second one. That shot with the window really stuck out to me too. I also love the moment where Jason jumps out of the bed and you see him with the bag for the first time. The whole third act is excellent. On the other hand, I couldn't disagree harder on part 3. Overall just super boring and full of dumb obvious 3D moments. But the worst part was when they tried to do the last minute jump scare which worked so well in the first 2, but in 3, it just looked really silly. Definitely my least favourite (Though 5's not much better) Part 4 I was a bit let down by after hearing how many people put it at the top of their list. It just kinda felt like another one. Nothing special. Not bad. Pretty good final act. Way better than 3, but not as good as 2. Honestly though, this whole series was a bit disappointing. I watched through the first 6 for the first time this October. I hadn't meant to watch that many, but I kept going because I was waiting for it to finally "get good". Which it kinda did with the 6th one actually, but to some extent, I feel like it's been copied so much that now it seems very cliche when it was actually more original when it first came out.

There's a great part in Part 2 where Vikki goes into the cabin she shares with Terry where the lighting flashes and behind her, silently, you see for a split second Jason's shadow. It's literally a blink and you miss it part. This movie just has him everywhere in the back ground. There's also a great place where they are jogging in the woods and hiking after the campfire story scene where Jay is just wandering around the bush and when he sees Ginny, you can actually hear him say "Hello."

I'd put The Dukes of Stratosphear album above most of XTC's album's probably bar Skylarking and English Settlement. I love it that much. Vanishing Girl is The Hollies, Collideascope (Partridge does a great Lennon vocal, even sounding like a proto Liam Gallagher) and Brainiac's Daughter is his perfect McCartney. You're A Good Man Albert Brown sounds like Steve Marriott Odgen's Nut Flake era Small Faces. No surprising the album outsold most of XTC's albums at the time as it's probably most commercial material they did.

I mean, 28 Years Later's being made right now, I like District 9 but I don't think we need a sequel and Blomkamp hasn't made a good movie *since* District 9... I dunno, I think the problem isn't crappy sequels, the problem is sequels made decades later in of themselves, even when they're good, unless they're George Miller, they're not particularly creatively justifiable.

I played Bully on its re-release on the Xbox 360. I thought it was a pretty good story actually. On reflection the name Bully more refers to the school, seeing as the character you play as doesn't really outright bully anyone. It was actually quite refreshing to play as "The hero of the underdogs".

    • @DouglasRobson00
      @DouglasRobson00 Місяць тому

Yeah, I always found it a little bit of an odd choice of name given that Jimmy is just about the only character who doesn't bully anyone - but, yeah, it does work well in the context of the school. Thanks for checking the video out!

Bill Murry's "Scrooged" always gets an airing in our house every year, along with the Bottom Xmas special "Holy"! It sounds really stupid in this context but Muppet Xmas Carol proper uncut version is actually quite dark. The point where Scrooge realises he f**ked up his life by treating his girlfriend so badly that she just told him to politely f**k off and enjoy his money as that;s al he cares about now, she sings a heartbreaking song about how shitty Scrooge has been to her. Unlike "Scrooged" there's no second chance for Ebeneezer in the Muppet version, he just has to live with it. He can't get her back, it's been too long and the regret is so huge he just sits there and cries his eyes out about how he f**ked up the best thing he ever had in his life all 'cos of his greed. They took the song out where she tells him what a shit he's been 'cos kids would find it upsetting! It's stupid, you need to learn to not f**k things up when you have it good or you'll end up like Scrooge, a twisted and bitter old man.

Also, Chris Barrie deserves a lot of credit for pulling off all those twinned split-screen shots. Even his eyelines are nearly perfect. Nowadays we have a lot of digital aids and assists that would make scenes like that easier for an actor, but here he pretty much just had to hold his own performances in his head and act against them. That's tough.

It is interesting just how often Red Dwarf returns to the idea of a female version of Rimmer. Besides this episode and 'Parallel Universe' (where we also got a female Lister and Holly) we get Rimmer mentioning how his brothers "let" him be the Queen of Spain when they played the Three Musketeers ('Polymorph'), the female Rimmer clones on Rimmerworld, Rimmer spending most of 'Quarantine' in a gingham dress and Rimmer ending up in Trixie LaBouche's body in the novel 'Better Than Life'. Rimmer also turned into a woman in Rob Grant's non-canon 'Into the Gloop' script. I'm not saying there is anything to it - though Rimmer as a very deeply closeted transwoman is an intriguing line of thought especially given how ostentatiously macho Ace Rimmer is - but it is interesting they go back to it a lot.

As much as I agree that Rimmer as a closeted transwoman would make for an interesting plot thread, unfortunately Red Dwarf comes from a time where "Man in a dress" was played strictly for laughs. I'm pretty sure the first positive rep transwomen had in UK comedy was (and this is beyond ironic) the episode of The IT Crowd where Reynholm is romantically involved with a transwoman, and thoroughly regrets leaving her.
