Landing to minimums, Friday Harbor, 8 23 24
I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to make it in to Friday Harbor because of low clouds. I was tracking a Cessna 172 from Boeing Flying Club in front of us. They went missed but were able to land on the second try. We were able to talk to him and get some real time conditions. We were cleared for the approach but then got that cancelled because the a Friday Harbor air ambulance Caravan was ready to leave. We did a couple of turns in the hold and then went in and landed. I saw the airport at the last second before going missed. THe caravan behind us went missed. From the ground I heard it flying over but never saw it at all. He then came around a second time and was able to land.

Jedediah Island Overnight

Anchoring for an overnight stay in a small cove on Jedediah Island, British Columbia. We were heading back to Friday Harbor from Desolation Sound and wanted to spend the night somehwere around Lasqueti Island or Jedediah Island. We got there pretty late in the day and most of the anchorages were full or facing the wind. The Wagonners guide hinted at this cove, which is quite small but perfect f...

Cancelling IFR in the air in this situation is not wise. Had a deer jumped out and you had to do a go-around, the go-around would have to be executed in IMC without having your IFR clearance anymore. You also cannot legally cancel IFR unless you’re either in VFR conditions (which you weren’t because of the cloud separation rules not being met) or you’re on the ground (which you weren’t). If you shoot an approach, break out, can maintain VFR and have no problem executing a go-around while maintaining VFR, then by all means cancel in the air so that the next IFR guy can come in or go.
I think you need to explain why you think it was wise, not to mention legal, to cancel IFR while you were still in the air, in IFR conditions...
Great vid - was going to comment on the hold programming, but see you already did. My RV-7 has a similar, slightly more minimalist setup - G3X, GFC500, GTN625, and one Garmin NavCom integrated, so I have a bit less on the audio side, and no nice MFD 7" G3X or nice big 750. Would ask that, in any future vids like this, you keep in the programming. It is always good to see, for both, "wow, that's better than how I would have done it.." and for, "what is he doing? Hold at Waypoint is right under his finger???" Thanks much, and nice job on it overall.
Great video! My first captain job at Delta was on the 737-2xx ( -232s and -247s). We had dual VOR/ILS/DME/ADF and marker beacons. Your suite puts it to shame! After 8 years on the 75/76 an old part of my brain was reawakened. It was fun, but hard work now and then. Manipulating displays and managing the system takes a lot of time- the PNF would do that in the airlines if you weren't on autopilot. Keep safe and fly that airplane first. Happy landings.
Help! WTF is with the strike through?
This reminds me of a ILS landing at LAX (in an old 172) where we got down to 250 ft still didn't see the strobes, or the runway, except my wife caught a runway light flash by and a few feet lower we broke out with 12,000 feet of runway ahead. Given that were trapped in the LA basin with 10,000 icing level and most airports BELOW IFR...this brand new (foolish) IFR pilot luckily survived a string of bad decisions.
@@danielhawley6817 Whew!
Nice. Did some of my IFR training in 7PD up there. Good real world actual IMC experience. GFC autopilot makes life easy!
Thanks for all the comments. I am not a pro pilot or CFI but like to make videos so I can see some of the mistakes I make and then figure out how to do better. I have been flying this approach into friday harbor regularly for many years, originally as an NDB approach before the GPS approach was published. In this approach I made some mistakes and learned from them. One mistake was putting 4000 into altitude select for the climb in hold, even though I was cleared to and read back 3000. The controller was nice and just cleared me to 4000 when he saw I was going up past 3000. The usual hold altitude is 4000 so maybe that is why my brain put that number into the GFC500. The second thing I could have done better was programming the hold into the GTN750xi. Since it was a published hold and it felt like I had about 30 seconds before I got to the waypoint, I decided to just delete the approach and then re enter it with the procedure turn, which is the same as the hold, so the autopilot could follow it. After playing with the GTN trainer on the ipad I realized how I could have done it with a lot fewer button pushes. Fun stuff. And next time I will fly it without the autopilot 😂
Great video, even for trainee VFR pilots, about why they shouldn't take risks in terms of weather. When I was learning to fly, my instructor intentionally took me into IMC to teach me a very valuable lesson. I was totally disoriented. Amazes me to watch this type of approach to minimums in such weather conditions.
I held my breath for the last few seconds of the approach. Hopefully you saw the runway before the “minimums” call 👀
Pilots always put in numbers on the autopilot. Hope they can fly without it.
Beautiful avionics panal. Great on the approach.
It appears a right underwing access door abeam the rear window is hanging open. Is that correct?
@@larryg1947 That’s a gear mirror. It replaces an access panel and you can look out from the cockpit to see if your front and right gear are down.
@@allenhugh1 Perfect, that makes total sense. Thanks.
This is a great IFR video with a hold before the final approach. It was a good example to see. I echo the same sentiments as other viewers (IFR students) that commented on this video. Great Job! Thank you.
Is there water inside your wing tip light?
Yeah. Those are Stene Quasar CX wingtip lights. I got them during the pandemic and I think they had issues with the lens supplier. They assured me that the light is sealed; however, you remind me to circle back with them and see if there is a fix. I think that the usual lenses don’t have a low point at the bottom for water to collect in. The water drains quickly after a flight so I usually forget about it. I did drill a hole in the lens for the draining, though!
What an awesome IFR panel and yoke, where did you get it done?
@@TurtleDucki Thanks. It has worked well. Done at Tacoma Avionics Shop in 2021.
Excellent video! This type of camera view is great for those of us in training for the IFR rating. So many aviation videos on UA-cam train the camera on the pilot, and not the flying environment. Thanks for providing a great learning video.
Not a pilot, totally intrigued with flying videos and that was impressive. Cool as a cucumber. Well done.
Great video! An IFR rating sure comes in handy, especially up there, where overcast days are plentiful. You're a great pilot, and I thank you for posting this video; it was definitely worth the watch!
I just flew up and back this evening… cavu, though 😁
Enjoyed the approach and hold.
Why are the Approach and /or Nav lights on the Autopilot not on? (3.00)
Hey I’d love to know which setting menu has Lean Assist. I’m trying to enable it but do not see the option in configuration mode.

dude what a killer setup, this must be a joy to fly. keep the videos coming!
My 182 (N4428R) is similarly equipped: I found your "direct to" 3NM buttonology confusing as you went too fast. Golden Oldies also has a nice description of this process that describes the "button pressing" in a bit more detail. You do a great job, but INMO, you are making an assumption of viewer knowledge that likely isn't present. Sort of like defining a word by using that some word. Thank you for taking the time to present this topic.
Fast forward makes the taxi speeds look far too high.
I have to agree with @finsent0. Amazing camera setup!
Amazing setup with this beauty of a high wing, keep em rocking!
Beautiful plane!
I miss Newcastle/Bellevue/Renton...use to live off coal creek blvd a few miles from factoria
I think they make pills for that....... ;)
Awesome videos! Appreciate you sharing!
The use of local landmarks by local pilots should be discouraged. It can be confusing for those not familiar with them and/or the area. When I was flying in proximity to aircraft near me, I wanted to know where they were. " Five miles Southeast at three thousand" beats the hell out of "Over five twenty bridge" or "Over Bellevue"??
Agree. Reporting bellevue is part of the arrival procedure and is right on the edge of class delta for the airport in question, krnt. So, it is a highly controlled area. That being said, it is a very busy corridor for departures from boeing field to the east. Ads-b traffic is really important here, and it is inside a mode c veil so everyone is visible unless there is a malfunction. I have once filed a Nasa report on this area due to a close call.
Local landmarks may or may not be approved VFR reporting points. Where I do most of my flying, Mormon Temple, Brushy Peak, Oakland Coliseum, Golden Gate Bridge, Lake Chabot, etc, etc are all recognized VFR points and marked as such on the TCA chart.
Oh dang! A cutlass RG! Beautiful plane. That was wild, nice job troubleshooting and resolving the issue.
Thanks. It's a TR182. The Cutlass RG doesn't have struts on the wings, like the newer 210's.
@@allenhugh1 Oh I see! Thanks for the clarification. There are so many neat Cessna variants!
The lack of other radio calls on the frequency would have had me worried it was a me problem. Glad it all worked out in the end and they were able to work out what was wrong and correct it.
What airport is this?
Paine Field in Everett, Washington, 19 miles North of Seattle
It is not Paine Field, it is Renton Municipal KRNT

I like the panel setup.
Do you have the Garmin GFC500 auto pilot? I fly 2 planes with that AP. One with a GPS400W and one with a GTN750XI. Both will turn much sharper than 90 degrees, for example, while the TOGA button is flying back to the IAF and I activate the approach to make another pass the turn is maybe 150 degrees.
Im looking at moving up to the Seattle metro. What's the hangar situation or covered spots?
Damn. Thought you were gonna land on them clouds 😅 ☁️ ☁️
How do you turn it off? I've looked all thorough the G3X installation manual and can't seem to find it.
I replied to your question in your g3x FB group with a picture of the setup page from the g3x install. Hope it helps. Have your installer do it for certified.
@@allenhugh1 saw it. Thx.
That is one heck of a nicely equipped 182!
I think you forgot to mention that alt bug needs to be set at your low point of the AP visual descent before you expect AP to descend.
Such a life. ❤
Still can’t get this to work unless I’m at less than a 90 intercept
Do they sell the flowers or the bulbs?
What does it do if you arm approach mode during any of this?
Almost everyone not wearing a life jacket. Real smart and I wondering what his insurance provider would think of that.
Nice panel and flight.
