Early Molokai Homesteader Mary Lee speaks with Harry James Mowat
E Ola mau na kanaka Maoli o Hawai’i nei e Ola mau =E KU=
So happy to see your 40 years of dedicated archiving for future generations come to fruition. Mahalo nui loa Dooley. Don't stop!
Awww tutu man Peter Dudoit. Maurice, Marcellus - those names carried on to future generations. Castle and Tracy took care their tutu man, beautiful. Funny how I had seen Kupuna a large part of my life but never spoke with him. So nice to hear his voice. Uncle Dupre had a small snack shop down Halawa back in the day. Life was simpler then. Nice to see Harry James.
I remember this Kupuna. With his cigar and papale. Was always very cordial. He was a treasure of Moloka’i history. I understood the Cookes were very generous. “ May the goof lord provide the following:” cracked me up.
Awww Uncle Butch…. He was one eleu man. Paniolo, mahiai, weave lauhala. Those Kupuna are gone. If that is tutu Buffalo taro patch I remember seeing watercress in the punawai when I was a young girl. I hope the spring is still there. He mentioned getting huli from Dave Martin who farmed kalo in Waialua valley at one time. At the eastend almost all of us had taro patch.
Mean! These videos are rare and very important! Mahalo for them!
Those were awesome times. The island was unified and respected Kupuna. A time of self discovery with some awesome Hawaiians.
Aunty Mary Lee was a lovely soul. Warm, loving soul. A young Harry James. Those were the days when Kupuna were revered and respected. They played a strong role in the leadership of Moloka’i politics and cultural enrichment. Moonlight nights cutting lantana - hardcore. Waikapu settlers - Rev Paaluhi. Aloha no Aunty Mary Lee.
How my heart longed for the Kupuna - their wisdom, simplicity and aloha. I remember all of these kupu an except Kupuna Kaleikini. Condense milk and “cracka”! Donkey meat! I remember catching alamihi - so ono. I can imagine how beautiful Waialua was back in the day. Linalina pancake! Palaoa pupu’u! Gum from the ulu tree! June and I would do that! Kupuna Esther Lin Kee was a classic Hawaiian - I miss our Kupuna. We could learn so much from the way they conducted themselves.
My grandmother was from Kipahulu. She moved to Moloka’i where she married Panila Kapuni. At our home at Ualapu’e, we learned how to plant, pick lauhala, pick - clean and prep limu, how to keep our yard clean etc. we worked really hard and learned how to survive. No need talk, we just filled the void with no instruction. I miss mama.
Awww aunty Harriet, awww Harry James.

Growing up on Molokai and my parents knew Pepe Cooke, this brought back many memories of the life on Molokai. It is such a special place in Hawaii and I am fortunate that I grew up here. Molokai no ka oi!
