Woodturning old firewood into a winged bowl
In this video I make a winged bowl from the other half of this old piece of firewood from my previous video. I found the finished piece to be surprising of the grain patterns and colors within.
For the finish I used multiple coats of boiled linseed oil. I used shellac to seal the wood and UV resin to place my logo/makers mark.

Woodturning old neglected firewood. Amazing Wild Grain!

From this old neglected firewood, I make a winged bowl. Or is it a platter? It had a lot of cracks so I stabilized that with C.A. glue. I found the finished piece to be surprising of the grain patterns and colors within. For the finish I used multiple coats of boiled linseed oil. I used U V resin to place my logo/makers mark. Woodturning Old rotting board. Surprising beauty!
Переглядів 2,4 тис.14 днів тому
In this video I make a platter from this old rotting board. This board has been outside for around 15 years. It was a part of a planter box I made. The coating on it is a tinted stain. I have not bothered to look into what is in tinted stain, but it dulls tools very quickly! It had a lot of tear out at the ends of the board, due to the rotting wood. I stabilized that with C.A. glue. I found the...

Woodturning 2 WEEK SOAK in DYE. Wood Christmas tree. Experiment Pt. 2 of 3
Переглядів 5 тис.Місяць тому
I wanted to see what soaking a piece of wood in dye would do. I've heard of logs sinking in bodies of water, that end up with beautiful coloration. Given I only thought of this in November, it was a limited amount of time. So I decided to use dye dissolved in alcohol, as to speed up the dry time. I used a powdered blue and yellow dye to make the green dye. That resulted in some unexpected color...
Woodturning firewood Maple vase with red dye Pt. 1 of 3
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Місяць тому
Woodturning a piece of Maple firewood I thought might have some figure. I decided to try using just red dye to bring out the figure. I used a darker application of red dye for the first round of applying the dye. The second was a bit lighter. I still have a section of this log, that I will try using black dye and red dye to see the difference that will make. For the finish, I just used multiple...
Woodturning: See the beauty GLOW in black LOcust. Live edge bowl

@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I learned of the new tool I used for sanding the bark from this fellow woodturner here on UA-cam. Phil Anderson Shady Acres Woodshop. He is the only other woodturner I have seen use this. It is called the SAND-O-FLEX. It worked very well for smoothing out the sharp spots of the bark, but without taking it down too far. The bark on Black Locust is very soft, so I ...
Woodturning: Cherry left to rot!! Wood bowl
Переглядів 1,6 тис.2 місяці тому
Cherry log was left to rot in a creek bottom. Friend thought the tree had been taken down 2 or 3 years ago. The sap wood was spalted and very punky. Gave me some issues keeping my bowl gouge sharp. I used boiled linseed oil for the finish. I am quite happy with how the piece turned out. It has more figure and chatoyance than I was expecting. I put text in the video saying there will be a future...
Woodturning firewood. Figured Maple vase
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 місяці тому
Woodturning a piece of Maple firewood I thought might have some figure. While it did end up having figure, I found the different colorations and patterns in the sap wood to be very beautiful. Let me know what you think of this vase in the comments. I was debating if I wanted to use dye to really bring out the figure. However, I was worried if I did, I might lose the definition of patterns and c...
Woodturning Black Walnut with sap wood. Completing 2 rough turned bowls
Переглядів 4463 місяці тому
In this video I complete 2 bowls that I previously rough turned while they were green (wet). Both bowls have sap wood, one has more sap wood at the bottom and one has sap wood at the top. The bowl with sap wood at the top got a little out of round during the turning. This caused a little bit of a divet at a couple places both in the outer wall and at the rim. Certainly not what I had planned, b...
Woodturning Maple firewood. Bringing out the figure, is end grain turning best? Pt2 of 2

Woodturning Maple firewood. Bringing out the figure, is END grain turning best? In this video I turn a piece of firewood that I thought would have some figure. Woodturning firewood (cherry). I Took mother-in-law's firewood and made this offset tea light holder
Переглядів 5974 місяці тому
My mother-in-law got a new load of firewood. I noticed this piece had some interesting grain and figure. I believe it to be cherry. I wonder if this would be considered to be figured or quilted? I made it into a vase / tea light holder. For the finish I used shellac, garnet colored 2 lb. cut, mixed with boiled linseed oil. I think doing the turning a bit offset made for a more interesting look....
Figured maple. I popped the figure with black dye. Wood bowl
Переглядів 5354 місяці тому
I decided to try using dye to pop the grain in this piece of figured maple. I used black dye and must admit that the piece turned out a little darker than I would have liked. However, I am still happy with it. I find it amazing to see "movement" in the figure. For the finish I used a 2 lb. cut of blonde shellac with boiled linseed oil. I purposely did not dye the bottom to show what the wood lo...

Threes have different cell structure, and dye will penetrate better in some. Is this aspen?

I believe it was maple, but not positive. It came from a pile of firewood. I picked this piece of wood specifically for this project, as it had some sap wood and heart wood. To your point of structure, to see how much the dye would penetrate. I thought it was a pretty interesting experiment.

I like the design. I let the wood tell me what the final turning will be. Thanks for sharing.

if want more green it's probably easier to roughly turn the tree before soaking in dye... or use a vacuum chamber, but that's an expensive toy. anyway I'm always in for an experiment, so I subscribed ;-)

Thank you for subscribing! Yeah, I didn’t want to invest in a vacuum chamber just for this. It was more about curiosity of how deep the dye could penetrate the wood and seeing the effect. Kind of like the old logs that are brought up out of waterways after years of being submerged.

You turned a lovely large piece of wood and turned it into a plate, I don't get it. And as fire wood how big is your fireplace. A tree only grows once and it doesn't need to be sawdust in the end .

@@bretteee This piece actually had some rot due to sitting out too long. I generally would not burn such firewood if I can help it. I'll try and make it more obvious in future videos.

Just came across your channel and it looks like you are doing a great job 👍. My lathe is an old one and I also took a motor and controls from a treadmill and converted it over. It works great! If your slowest speed is about 900 you can change that by changing your pulley sizes. I've found that a minimum speed of around 300 is necessary for the really unbalanced pieces. Good luck and keep turning!

Thank you! I appreciate you telling me that. It was a fun project tearing down the treadmill and fitting it to the lathe. I can actually get mine slow enough I can count the rotations. Maybe in the next video I'll show a clip of just how slow I can get it.
