This Sculpture Could Collapse
This video covers the process of building, deforming, shaping, and trimming a closed form, featuring a twisted belly resting on a two-legged base.
Coiling has its do’s and don'ts, tips and tricks that allow for the creation of a wide range of forms. Through trial and error, I’ve developed systems that guide me through this process.
Over the years, I’m learning how to recreate what I envision in new forms, sometimes altering the scale, how to move my hands to manifest measured curves in the physical world, and how to collaborate with clay in a way that honors its limitations while also freeing my creative desires.
I offer The Woman Vessel Workshop with the intention to share these systems and skills with you. I hope they will provide a map for you to navigate your own practice and bring you faster to the results you want to see for yourself.

Coiling Method for Pottery: Creating a Handmade Clay Vessel
Переглядів 17 тис.2 місяці тому
This video covers the process of shaping and refining the form. I work intuitively, continuously changing angles to see how the form evolves, often de-forming or reshaping until the flow feels right. Coiling has its do’s and don'ts, tips and tricks that allow for the creation of a wide range of forms. Through trial and error, I’ve developed systems that guide me through this process. Coiling Ceramics - How to Roll Round Coils for Hand-building Pots
Переглядів 3,7 тис.3 місяці тому
How To Roll Round Coils - Instructions: 1. Cut clay into equal amounts, about the size of a slightly larger than a tennis ball, making them easy for your hands to hold. 2. Compress the clay into spheres. 3. Squeeze the clay evenly while turning it in your hands. Once the sphere begins to shape into a sausage, spread the movement vertically (up and down), aiming for a thickness of about 3 cm and...
Coiling Ceramic Sculpture - Hand Trimming

I use metal kidneys, both serrated and flat, along with shredders (graters) of various shapes to help refine the different curves. Since this clay is particularly groggy, I use a damp sponge to create slip on the surface before smoothing it with a rubber kidney at the end. Coiling has its do’s and don'ts, tips and tricks that allow for the creation of a wide range of forms. Through trial and er...
Coiling Ceramic Vessel, from Building to Wood-firing
Переглядів 2,6 тис.3 місяці тому
Starting from a pinch pot, I create a wide bowl shape before changing direction to build inwardly. I then work on the fold of the top part before changing direction again and closing with a narrow classical neck. The piece is wood-fired to about 1300 degrees, finished with a shino glaze. Coiling Large Ceramic Sculpture - Building Vessel's Body, Narrow Neck & Hand Trimming/Smoothing
Переглядів 1,3 тис.7 місяців тому
This video covers a period of four weeks during which I've been coiling this larger sculpture. The beginning finds me building the top part of its body. I then move upwards, eventually finishing with a classic narrow neck. I then sculpt and refine each curve individually, before fully smoothing its surface. Coiling has its do’s and don'ts, tips and tricks that allow for the creation of a wide r...

this is awesome. I have a question though. what is the type of clay being used? it looks almost like it has sand in it. sorry if there is an obvious answer to this. I'm just completely new to all of this.

might be sand! grog is often added to clay to minimize shrinking and prevent cracking en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grog_(clay)

As a beginner, I learned a lot from your work. I will definitely apply my take aways from your techniques to improve my trimming and final touch. You look so passionate while working. I can see that you let the art travel with you to its world. Amazing piece of art!!!❤👏

A satisfying and feminine form. Your technique is very tactile, and somehow musical as you repeat patterns of movement with variations.
