Winter Kayak Fly Fishing - Corpus Christi, Texas
Absolutely phenomenal afternoon at "The Church" (Packery Flats) in Corpus Christi. Only had about 2 1/2 hours to fish, but I must have caught close to 50 trout - and a red, pin fish, and a ribbon fish. Sun was out, it was about 70 degrees and the tide was super low. Tried out a new fly line from Rio - it casted well, but it tangled up a lot... I'm giving it mixed reviews. Audio isn't great due to the wind (sorry). Can't wait to go again...

Absolutely beautiful day in downtown Austin, Texas. Close to 80 degrees in the middle of December - gotta love it. Fishing however, not so great. Water was crystal clear, great structure, lots of cover - just no fish this time, but definitely a spot to try again.

Quick, last minute trip to Lake Buchanan over the Thanksgiving break. Crazy cold start, but it warmed up later in the morning. Put in a few miles paddling and never found the fish. I know they are there - fishing was fantastic in the spring. Maybe next time... Can't wait to go again.

1st of Nov and temps still close to 80F - gotta love it! Another great day on Decker Lake. The boat ramp is closed - so no boats or jet skis - I wish they would never reopen it :-). Tried out a new spot - Lake Fayette. Looks like it should be full of bass, but only hooked up on one - definitely not worth the drive... Left after 5 hours and stopped at Lake Bastrop on the way home to complete a 1/2 day fishing trip. Only fished for a few hours at Bastrop - but did ok. Got to enjoy one of the prettiest sunsets I've seen is a while. Can't wait to go again...

Another beautiful sunrise and another beautiful day in central Texas - and the fishing was great too. I tried a new fly I tied up (Double hook streamer - video is here if interested in tying your own - ua-cam.com/video/oCKmkcpsgoU/v-deo.html ) It was super windy, but if once I found some calm water - the fishing was great. No - I use floating line with ~15ft leader. I've tried the sinking line and it doesn't cast great - and on this lake there is a lot of hydrilla. so unless the fish are really deep (over 15 ft) sinking line isn't great.

    Hey man, been watching your channel for a while and I think you mentioned you use an 11wt. So I just got a 9wt and i find it very difficult casting in general coming from my 6wt. Now I can see what you do with that 11wt is pretty impressive. Any tips on how do handle a heavy rod?

    • @greggibby3062
      @greggibby3062 6 місяців тому

      Lot of different factors to consider - is it a fast action or medium action, carbon fiber or fiberglass, etc.. But - even with all that, I've found that doing a double haul and letting the rod do most of the work is the best way to get more distance and to save your arm and shoulder. there is a really good tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/D5tIbK6xcjI/v-deo.html

      Hi Jonathan. Some added advice which might speed your learning curve and minimize future frustration/mistakes. First some background- I am not a professional though I have been flyfishing longer than the majority of guides I've met. In my youth, I started flyfishing for panfish/bass/pike/carp and other freshwater species. However, at this point I have almost exclusively (not counting flyfishing trips for bass or when I journeyed elsewhere) flyfished the entire Tx gulf coast from Galveston to SPI for over 30 years. As already noted by the content creator the DOUBLE HAUL is vital for any fly fisher. It's even more critical to saltwater flyfishing than freshwater. I recently discovered another channel which I've been enjoying where almost all of flyfishing content is done on small central Tx streams. From the video perspective of the content creator, I immediately noticed this gentleman's casting stroke lacked the use of both the single and double haul. This is why he required an excessive number of false casts in order to reach his target- even when using small flies. As it happens, later in the series of his videos I saw where this person fished the gulf coast with a friend targeting redfish from a guides flats skiff. I KNEW he would struggle mightily even before he took his first shot because of his casting stroke. What I am about to share with you, is not intended to come across as bragging so bear with me. When I first decided to learn how saltwater flats/surf flyfish I was told by a boat salesman I met at a boat show in Houston who had just gotten into saltwater flyfishing that I would need a 9 or 10 weight- so this is what I purchased. This was completely erroneous information. I did catch fish, however it's akin to using a bazooka to hunt rabbit and squirrel. Shortly thereafter, I went to the ONLY fly shop in Houston at the time (long out of business) where I met Capt. Chris Phillips- may he rest in peace. Chris was transplanted Floridian working part time at the store and once (perhaps still does) held one of the tarpon flyfishing records in Florida. He was an outstanding guide who brought his Florida style flats skiff to Houston and would roam the gulf chasing tarpon, tuna etc. whenever he was not inshore fishing. It was he who informed me I would not need anything above a 6wt to handle any inshore fish. And that was that. Now, the ONLY reason I will pick up a 9 or 10 weight is when I am chasing pelagic brutes like Jack Crevalle. If you learn the correct casting stroke utilizing a double haul, you'll be able to use your 6wt all the time. My go to rod for 3 decades has been a 6 wt. When it's dead calm as it was in this particular video, you can easily use a 5wt unless you are using a big wind resistant fly. Back in the 90's I would fish the big open flats of the Laguna Madre-there is zero wind protection there- with Capt. Scott Sparrow (I believe he's now retired) all day long with a 5 TFO wt unless the wind was simply howling. Now, the only time I break out an 8wt for inshore flyfishing is when I am casting large-weighted flies standing on the bow of a casting platform needing to punch into a stout wind or when chasing Bahamian bonefish. Here in Tx, an 8 wt will handle any big inshore fish - including the baby/juvenile tarpon you can find in deep S. Tx and trust me, tarpon can PULL. If you can find it, see if you can locate an excellent though now ancient instructional video by Chico Fernandez. Chico is amongst an elite group of legendary S Florida saltwater flyfishing experts- and S. Florida is where all of this was born. The video is back from the VHS tape era, but it might be available in modern format. It was filmed against a black ground and also used slow motion so you can easily see what is happening with the fly line. If you can practice a bit, and apply the information from that video you will have no problem transitioning to the saltwater game. If you aren't yet using the double haul, you will also reap an instant benefit in freshwater environments when throwing big deer hair surface flies for bass or big poppers for stripers. Best of luck in your future flyfishing journey's.

    I just found your channel, your videos are fun. I fly fish as well, and do my best to get out 2 times a week. I live in Leander Tx and always looking for someone to go fly fishing with. I have a kayak and stuff. I tie my own flys as well and I build my own fly rods. Let me know if you want to meet up and go fly fishing sometime. I'm always free to do some fly fishing.
