If you reject, or disadvantage in some fashion, anyone, because of race, gender, sexual orientation, faith, ethnic background or political philosophy, you are being racist, sexist, or bigoted in some way, and you set back the cause of learning, exploration, and innovation. In addition to being unjust, society will miss out on the contributions of ALL the talent available. If you ACCEPT, or ADVANTAGE in some fashion, anyone, because of race, gender, sexual orientation, faith, ethnic background or political philosophy, you are likewise being racist, sexist, or bigoted in some way, and you set back the cause of learning, exploration, and innovation. Once again you will be unjust and society will miss out on the contributions of ALL the talent available. The error in both cases is to be race-conscious, gender-conscious, orientation-conscious, ethnicity-conscious, faith exclusionary, politically exclusionary, and you are engaging in a race, gender, or other identity spoils system. If educational opportunities are lacking in some areas of society, go make actual differences to fix that, but engaging in DEI bean counting window dressing and "representational" identitarianism will produce bad results. It's what makes people decide Asians are "overrepresented". I like what Kathi says about outreach programs to improve what has been lacking in some areas, but there is a strong argument made that it is the diminishing of educational standards and the lack of will to hold students to those standards that is the real threat to meeting the competitive challenges that American society is facing now and in the future. There is also a strong argument to be made that the United States was, throughout the first half of the 20th century, the most dynamic place in the world for discovery, innovation, and economic development, even while having much more dramatic economic and educational disparity than we have at present. That dynamism continued throughout the second half of the 20th century as the disparity lessened. We should want there to be less disparity in society as a general good, but it is the opportunity to learn and freedom to contribute, and be rewarded, which incentivizes effort, achievement, general development, and growth, not an identitarian, representational squint. It seems that immigrants to the United States know this best. Otherwise, they would go elsewhere. I'm sorry, but freedom counts far more than "representation", and the present war on standards in the name of equity or inclusion, is the greater concern. At the same time, every institution which uses part of their endowments and efforts for outreach, so all potential talent can be cultivated, should be applauded. Otherwise, DEI is just an acronym for a platitude, a kind of buzzword. You know, for a very long time before "DEI" was coined, people in this country believed in opportunity and freedom. Do we really think we've discovered something new?

This is very interesting perspective on drug development and should be common knowledge. People that don't know a lot about "big pharma" or academic scientific work are missing this inside view. And of course, how this academic work changed so many people's lives for the better.

They are spending thousands of dollar to wax that side walk by the NAI on a weekly basis, they recently spent more than a million dollar to plant a dozen of palm trees, and two dozens of table and bench next to the NAI, even though more than 90% of those benches are not being used. Please find a better way to spend your money, building management is taking big chunk of that money by themselves by giving these contacts to their own friends and family members. They can spend that money in poor neighborhood of Hillsborough county instead of making sidewalk sparkles or planting palm trees!
