Ivan Illich on Water and the History of the Senses - 1984
Here is Ivan Illich, speaking in 1984 at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. His topic: the history of water and of the senses. The following year, the Institute published his book 'H2O and the Waters of Forgetfulness.' It is still in print and a must for anyone interested in the senses, in water, in the history of sewers and smells, and in the "historicity of 'stuff'," as Illich puts it.
This is an excerpt of an hour-long video of Illich's complete talk and the following Q&A. That video is now available for downloading, in two parts, from the Internet Archive; it is well worth the effort:

Also, see this link for an interview - in French, but translation is available:

AudioMulch Improv - A Walk in Brooklyn
Переглядів 1,1 тис.13 років тому
The music is a "live" improv made with AudioMulch, a program I bought recently. I am still a novice with it, but learning something new every day. I am a big fan of Atom TM, aka Uwe Schmidt, and I took his marvelous tune Jazz Device, on the album Polyester, as my inspiration. Audiomulch is great fun to make music with, and so far, I've used it only in real-time, not making tracks for offline as...

This is another extract - with minor re-editing, to be clear - from Canadian Broadcasting's 5-hour program, The Corruption of Christianity, which featured Ivan Illich in conversation with David Cayley. That program was broadcast in 2000 and is now available in recorded form from CBC. Illich died in 2002, but Cayley later published a book providing access to full set of interviews on which the p...

he was a Jesus freak you have to remember that I mean otherwise he would just probably say "capitalism is evil" he generates all this talk because he wants to imagine a world in which it's possible that Jesus saved it all these kind of intellectual stuff because he's fundamentally a lunatic

How about we just go by what Jesus did say: "Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?" The lawyer replied, "He who showed mercy on him." Jesus said, "Go and do likewise."

"Hatred between Jews and Samaritans was fierce and long-standing" but the fallacy of the argument presented here is evident at first glance. It's the Samaritan that chooses to behave as a neighbour not the other way round.

Illich died in 2002 of a form of cancer, for which he refused conventional treatment.

Died of brain cancer but lived with face cancer for decades. He couldn't refuse something that was hopeless. He wouldn't give up the opportunity to master pain and death with his unique personal human means.

Listen to the entire series at: brandon.multics.org/library/Ivan%20Illich/illich2000corruption1.mp3 Love the way John Caputo puts it: Christs disciples and followers waited and waited and waited for His return, but all they got was the Church. The corruption of the best is the worst...and it didn't just happen to Christianity.

OK! After listening again I realize you do indeed resolve the dissonance. It's interesting how the resolution becomes the into to the next phrase. I like that! I also like the use of the full beat cross-delay on the melody in the second part - it seems to add a second "instrument". An alternate end might be to remove each sound layer as they were introduced.

Obviously a random, short loop, sequenced Arpeggiator for the "melody". Nicely arranged and performed. Personally I would introduce the mid break with a transposed bridge; maybe up a 3rd (my preference) for 8 to 12 bars, conclude the dissonant chord, then your rhythm break, 4 count silence (with echo - maybe), and back to the ending sequence.... just my critique! The piece is a dissonant "round" and I'm overwhelmed with the need to "finish" the chord at some point. Well done!

Make sure you follow the links I offered and watch the entire video; it's almost an hour long. Illich was deeply opposed to being recorded, on audio tape or film. "Modern-day pornography," he called it. But yes, we are lucky to have this short clip of such an extraordinary thinker and human being.
