Hi Ron, Are the crabbing regulations different for each state? Pertaining to sizes of the traps, cages, and sizes of the openings? We usually travel to NC OBX, Georgia & Florida, so I'm wondering if I can use the same traps in each state? You listed 'some of the gear needed', but I was hoping you also listed where you bought the traps shown? Why couldn't a person buy a slew of RACCOON box traps, say off of TEMU, & just alter the one side opening 'trip' door? Simple & CHEAP? THANKS
Thank you jdoboy don’t know the regulations from George in Florida although I fish Florida for years I never CRAB there Washington, Oregon, and California on the West Coast all have different rules. Sheesh that’s just the way it goes. Let me know how you’re crapping adventure girls I would imagine if you make those big tubes like I use maybe smaller you can do quite well with particular dates. Good luck Ron.
Beautiful pictures!
Thank you, more videos coming soon! I wish I took the photographs with those guys are all pros and have a wonderful site to look at other stuff. Enjoy. Have a good year.
Van, great insight.
Thank you for the rough winter with this weather. Hope you get out soon.
Also do mix the squid with your recipe
Do think your recipe will work in bait bags
Very helpful video, knowing a life jacket would make this much difference and how to use one gives me more confidence in going out with my waders (they're the boot kind). I'm still gonna be mindful of sneaker waves in the less sheltered spots, but now I won't worry about drowning if I trip over a rock in the bay or something silly like that.
Great, great observations. Be safe have fun I always double triple check the weather.
question... do you only use the 1 tube per trap, and I saw the smaller orange bait holder... all you use it one of them... ? thanks Dan
Yes, one tube per trap the orange ones or small ones that I bought off of Walmart. They don’t hold much Bait but they were loaded oops, I use them anyway. That’s good observation, my compliments
just found your channel, looks great thanks
Thank you goodperson more videos come through throughout the year. You can also check out my brothers if you’re in the Photography @tv510 thank you Ron

Thank you DK-pr9ny i’ll try to get something up on the little neck for you. Do you prefer to clam in California, Oregon or Washington?
Great video Ron. Now I’m craving crab!

Glad you enjoyed it! I have more crabbing videos coming out soon.
I'll try those ingredient in my local. Thanks
You bet, good luck crabbing! Thanks for watching Fundayonwater
Ron, do you have any tips for us crabbers who primarily crab off the pier? I'm in newport and I've been getting beat up out there 😢
That’s a great question Anthony. My advice is find out where the crab are which bay which docks it’s all about location. If you’re restricted to CRAB from piers. Last year I witnessed Pierre crabbers limiting out in 7 inch crab or larger in Garibaldi. Again pier crabbing it’s all location, location, location because you can’t chase down the crab from the canoe or other watercraft. Good luck out there Ron.
Robby is awesome! Really nice guy. Hes a wealth of information. He sell crab rings for a great deal too!Can you make a crabbing video please?
Coming soon! more crabbing videos Thank you AnthonyLato

Thank you, Stackez check out the clamming video it’ll blow your mind. Thanks, Ron.
What kind of crab are you targeting? Will this work for blue crab?
Thank you big flip I am targeting Dungeness crab and red rock crab Not sure if it will work for blue crab, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t I am currently experimenting with salmon oil used on dog food Good luck let me know how your crabbing season goes Ron.
On the conical traps I use a weightlifter's disc wt. of 3#, now I have a funnel base bottom of 10"+ when hauling, also have a puller Mr. Crabby. I use rebar on the diagonals to lift the the hoop2-3" off the ground keeping the funnel base and better scent flow/ anchor legs The re-bar keeps the hoop from walking.
Thank you allPanache The area is a crab or relatively shallow, and I choose my weather accordingly and low moving tides This is been a formula that works extremely well for me and I don’t require the weights on my traps as you will need in deeper water and or higher currents Although I could see your helpful hints being very useful for others thanks for your comment. Let me know how your crabby season goes Ron.
Re:Crab bait look into fish oils, cod liver oil, fish oil, salmon oil for pets and my fav krill oil (no mercury). Fish pills I thread in front of my spinners for trolling the blade spreads the scent. I use krill OIL in my crab bait mix. Do some homework on all the oils. Good Luck Tony
Thanks for sharing!! Tony I’ve been experimenting with wild salmon. Oil made for dogs with good results, but haven’t perfected anything worth publishing yet I just went crabbing and crushed them. Some of the traps I could barely lift up they were so full, but I had to compare it with traps that weren’t oiled and I haven’t done that yet. Problem is when I go crabbing I want to get my crown but I want to test that will be doing testing in the next month to see. Thanks again Tony.
another trick i use is adding a flat disc wt. to the pocket at the bottom of the conical traps and outrigger hose on the diagonal legs to raise the hoop at least 2" above the ground and now you have a funnel base to the trap.
Great build Sir
Thank you TheGravygun
Thanks for the tip.
Happy to help pc1kz7tg9y the clamming video will blow your mind. Good luck.
Great information Ron.
Thanks for watching! Chris
Raw Bacon rocks the best oil slick also Spanish sardines are oily too it's all about that oil slick it brings all the crabs to the traps
Thanks Adam! I have never used bacon, I usually save that for myself! 😀 Your suggestion about creating an “oil slick” is a great one. I am currently playing with different fish oils to see if that makes a difference. I’ll let you know the results in an upcoming video Thanks for watching.
This guy has a ton of great ideas. Thanks Ron!
Glad you like them!
Ron is just like McGuyver! Pretty cool set up.
Thank you, Chris
Not sure how well that Velcro will hold that during moving water but looks like a great design but i think it would work better with a locking pin system for easy use of removing and putting back on but amazing work
Good question! Jaypalsha I’ve only used it in lakes and bays with decent current. Although my Basswood 17 is as slick as a mirror and has very little drag. Not sure what it would do in a river. If I test it in a river, I’ll let you know. Thanks for watching.
Good information Ron.
Thanks 👍 thank you, Chris Have you talked to Bill? He has the whole family out. He just recovered from a bug and then he got swamped by family. Poor guy. I’m sure he’s fine now. Protect yourself from the heat it’s a hot one
Hey friend! I love your videos. I've got an old school michicraft canoe I paddle out here on Long Island. Curious, which paddle do you use? It's beautiful!
Thank you for watching Jaredschutz. The paddle in the video is from Bendingbranches, but any quality paddle is a joy to use. I’ve never tried a carbon fiber one, but that is one of my dreams. Good luck with your canoeing. Thanks again for watching please share. Ron.
Great share! Can’t wait for my coast trip
Have fun! MRiedy Please share. Thank you, Ron.
I find whenever I go looking for clams here in Nova Scotia, if I’m not having luck, I’ll often be able to find mussels on the rocks near by. Someday I wanna try diving for scallops but I’d need a recreational scallop license for that.
Are used to die for scallops. Lotta fun lotta work good luck. Keep me posted on your success. Thanks, Ron.
Interesting looking clams, I thought they were ribbed mussels at first lol. Different than the ones I’ve seen here in Nova Scotia. Love harvesting shellfish, thanks for sharing 👊
Thank you Howwerelivingfishing Let me know if these techniques work in your area and if they’re legal thanks Ron please share
That was a great video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it! Pepymunson2832 Please share with a friend. Thanks, Ron.
Thanks for posting! Learned a lot in this video, definitely going to tie some ants tomorrow!
Thank you ThureyOutdoors More videos coming Some very cool ones on clamming and bass fishing Look forward to hearing from you in the future future
Ron knows his stuff and is a legendary, award winning sportsman. Great video Ron.
Thank you ChrisPeterson 4979
I am a canoeist who fishes with flies. I primarily troll for lake Trout and happiness for me is being dragged around a lake by one of those beasts. I have three modern canoes in my garage the largest is a 15' Novacraft Bluesteel which is 45 pounds , a Swift 14' in Carbon 28 pounds and a Clipper 14' Kevlar 40 pounds. Three different Canadian manufactures but all Prospector canoes. The prospector design has rocker that gives the canoe maneuverability and while a canoe that lacks rocker will track well it will be slow to turn. You talked about the Canadian stoke in one of your videos using that type of underwater paddle recovery in a canoe with rocker you can turn the canoe just by rolling your wrists. I look forward to watching more of your videos and learning from them.
Thank you Clifford Jessup Sounds like you do a lot of canoeing as well My next few videos will be on Cokenee, fishing bass fishing, and a special on clamming work and you can be devastating when others can’t get clams. It’s pretty cool. Look forward to hearing from you again
Where can we order a few of those flys.
Thank you for your question If you’re looking for Mercer’s missing Link you can pick that up anywhere” flies are sold or directly from The Fly Shop It is called The Fly Shop based in Redding, California they have a catalog that ships worldwide.
Thanks for the overview
Thank you gimliteye Sorry for the delay I’ve been traveling fishing and filming through Oregon and Washington Got some cool stuff coming out in a few months
Wil float on just a few inches of water?? Shoot, I got an old flat bottom canoe that will float on wet grass!!
Thank you 650Gringo for your comment and you’re right flat bottoms have the shallowest draft of all they just don’t have much if any secondary stability If you know what you’re doing, flat bottoms, can be a joy not recommended for the beginner I hope you enjoy the fishing segments coming your way some pretty cool stuff. Thank you Ron.
Great information. I might go out and get one!
Go for it! Thank you for watching and commenting. Look forward to seeing you or the great Nick on the water.
I’ve been considering the Basswood Solo. Any thoughts on the Basswood solo vs tandem?
Great tip!
Glad it was helpful! thank you. @tv510
