Making a Cat's Golden Years Good
Presented by Sheilah Robertson
Advances in veterinary medicine has increased the life expectancy of cats. However, we must ensure that they enjoy this extra time. With age, the function of major body organs such as the kidneys, heart, joints and brain deteriorate. The special senses including smell and vision also decline. Although we cannot stop the clock on ageing, we can support an ageing cat if we anticipate and monitor these changes. When working as a team, veterinarians and owners can enhance these golden years and assist their cat with “the activities of daily living”.
Learning objectives
- To understand the main changes that happen as cats age
- To learn what is normal in a senior or geriatric cat
- To learn what is abnormal in a senior or geriatric pet
- To understand why regular veterinary checks are vital to maintaining an older cat’s quality of life
- To understand why mental and physical health are both important to a cat’s overall well-being
- To learn how to help our feline friends navigate their golden years

Often hypertension is diagnosed in association with another illness. It is estimated that up to 60% of cats with chronic kidney disease and up to 20% of cats with hyperthyroidism develop systemic hypertension. Fortunatel...
Intestinal Parasites of Cats: Not Just the Usual Suspects
Переглядів 6155 років тому
Presented by Ian Wright When we think of intestinal parasites in cats, we tend to picture roundworms and tapeworms. While it is important to control these parasites for human and pet health, there is a wide range of more unusual parasites that live in the small and large intestine including Giardia, Tritrichomonas and Toxoplasma, potentially leading to disease and human health risk. With just a...

Nursing Sick Cats: Tips for Carers (Feline Friends Academy)
I wish I had seen this a month ago. My five yr old urinated with some blood in the tub. The vet just put him on antibiotics and said nothing urinary blockage or the causes. My cat died from urinary blockage on the operating table at another vet's office two weeks later. I'm learning to prevent this in my other cats. This heartbreaking because it was preventable.
Is that a rabid?
I wish I had known of this danger is cats. I lost my furbaby recently. She had just been diagnosed with high blood pressure. We started her on blood pressure medication. She was happy, healthy, and well. No signs of distress. As she was eating her dinner she had a terrible seizure and died in my arms as we rushed her to ER. It happened so fast. Pay attention.
Thanx from Holland ❤
Thank you so much for the great presentation
Very helpful! I foster kittens for the Local shelter and I occasionally bring a few in that have the herpes virus. It is good to know more about what I am dealing with.
My cat had the same problem. I found the book 'Feline Hypertension Managing and Overcoming' By Albert Costa on amazon very good advice for my cat and we managed much better. Thank you for this as well.
I own over 40 cats. Not a rescue, or sanctuary just didn't get my first couple spayed and neut.....ect. yes I've learned a hard lesson. Now that's out of way, I wanted to thank whoever put this talk out for me to find and listen to. With the many years I've had surprisingly very healthy cats despite the fact I do not use a vet unless of emergency issues, like ran over or preditor attacks. I worm, ear mite, flea, booboo's I do myself with over counter or called in meds. I UA-cam alot but ur talk has truly informed me of so much I needed to know in the care of my babies. Thanks so much! When kitten season comes around and I have 8 to 10 mothers have 6 or more babies a piece, it's usually expected we loose about half of them from unknown and traumatic outcomes. I wish I had found this info sooner. So again thanks and God bless the kitties!
Thank you for this video! My cat has had high blood pressure and I had three vets all tell me that he was totally fine even though his heart rate was over 175! He had a lot of behavioral issues and I couldn’t figure out what the problem was. I finally went to a vet who diagnosed him as hypertensive, and we got his blood pressure under control, and he has been so much sweeter and happier! I am thankful that you providing the correct education for people to best take care of their little fur babies. Thank you so much.❤
Happy you were so proactive. Sadly, my fur baby just started high blood pressure medication and passed less than a week later. Before this issue I never was aware that cats could even have high blood pressure. More people need to know about this.
I have had always 2 cats simultaneously for 20 years. When one of them died the lone left over cat reacted differently but all of them grieved. One took camp on the highest wardrobe and withdrew from all social activities with us humans. He came down at night for food. He stopped grooming, he was depressed. And one day a little skinny feral entered through the cat flap and that stinking withdrown cat came from that wardrobe with the tail up to the sky and nose greeted the stranger. That's when I understood that he wouldn't cope alone. That skinny stray had owners and got reunited with the owners. But I got a second cat for that lonely cat and they became close knit friends. 12 years later the wardrobe cat died of a tumor and the new kitten who by then was 10 was left alone. The first week he was unaffected. But then he stopped eating and became lethargic and the vets didn't find anything. All blood panels, ultrasound, nothing. Every day for 3 weeks we went to the vet for subcutaneous fluids to keep him alive. I force fed him with syringe and it really felt as if this cat just didn't want to live anymore without the buddy. I understood that he was grieving and went out to search for a new buddy and came back with an anxious little kitten that nobody wanted. The age difference was huge but that kitten needed someone there and then because the situation I got it from broke the kitten. And the lethargic grieving 10 year old needed a no threat new cat. And the very moment I brought the kitten home the lethargic cat got up, sniffed the anxious kitten and ate on his own motivation that very evening. It took some time but they became good friends. And it happened what had to happen with that kind of age difference: the older cat died when the kitten was 5. And at first he was unaffected. Didn't seem to notice. But after a week or so he grew nervous and went searching and waiting actively. He didn't stop waiting. He patrolled the courtyard, he checked the preferred sleeping places of the dead cat all the time. He waited. And at some point he gave up and stopped grooming and I knew he wasn't cut out to be alone. That cat seeked out my proximity during that time and that was out of character because by default that cat wasn't much into human attention but loved the second cat in the household. So I came home with another cat and now they are buddies and they still are developing a friendships. They have been together for 10 months and by now they are playing and grooming and nose greeting and rubbing against each other but it's not yet as close knit a friendship as I have seen cat friendships before. But it's not yet stagnated, they are still in the process of developing their relationships. My point is... In my anecdotal personal experience cats are very social and the loss of the buddy is traumatic but grieving looks very different in each cat. But I never had more than 2. Now I am at a point where I have the space and time and money to consider more than 2 cats. I have been thinking about adding a bonded pair of sibling kittens. Because if someone dies nobody ever is alone. I thought about adding 2 to the current 2 because then hopefully I would get 2 teams of buddies who, due to age differences, would have their main buddy in their own age group and so maybe I could avoid a 2 against 1 or 3 against 1 dynamic. Maybe the 2 teams of 2 would peacefully coexist across teams but have their own best buddy within their age determined team of 2? But I am scared of having 4 cats because of all the things you mentioned. I may only know very good cat friendships because I only ever had 2 at a time and then both can't pick a play buddy but have to cope with one other cat in the household. Maybe, if I introduce a choice of play buddies, then aggression and ganging up and excluding one would happen?
Wow this was amazing! So much info w great explanation. ❤Thank you so much.
not every meal needs to be complete and balanced which is why rotation of what you feed your animal is so important but she doesn't mention that sadly.
Wonderful lecture! Wish you gave more lectures on feline diabetes, especially with diabetes with other chronic illnesses.
Deficiency in selenium and zinc causes hyperthyroidism according to Demark and China findings.
If vet prices werent so high we might be able to do this.😢
Constipation serious problem with my 13 yr old diabetic male kitty
I have a FIP kitten and he is cured. It was a rough 83 days but he is cured. We also had a cat with bobcat fever the vet said could not be saved but we did it.
A good starting point for someone who knows nothing about feeding cats but the presenter only talks about the evidence that confirms her own biases. She is at best ignorant about raw cat food or at worst dishonest in the way she composes a misleading picture. Even vets now usually acknowledge that the bacteria she goes on about is not harmful to cats, and recent high quality research shows it’s very rarely harmful to their humans. Toxoplasmosis is killed by proper freezing. TB is a real concern, though it shows up rarely. Animals fed commercial diets also die from various cases of contamination not mentioned here. Why not just be a bit more accurate or ‘complete’ in the picture presented?
From what i've seen people who bring up WSAVA are anti raw because WSAVA themselves are sadly. Also her thing that all life stages is basically kitten food doesn't make sense when you think about it but maybe that's just me personally.
One of my cats had quite a large bald patch at the site of his kitten vaccinations. He never developed a sarcoma. This was never reported to the vet as the breeder didn’t notice it and I see it’s not listed as an adverse reaction. He had a large bald patch for life.
Can I inject glp1 peptide, which is just like ozempic into my cat?
Thank you Dr. Caney & FFA!
Thank you
there has been recalls in the US regarding pentobarbital in canned dog food which would suggest euthanised animals were use as part protein of the protein source...
Thank you sooooo much for the video. As the host said, you were so clear and so thorough and your love for the work you do shows. Wanted to mention something about one of the monitoring devices. Vet put a Libre2 monitoring device on our cat. I became obsessive with checking it as he was newly diagnosed. Ended up absolutely hating it because of LOTS of error messages, including hours at a time when it would not allow counts to show. As I explored on google the reviews it appears that about half the sensors fail … and they are very expensive. We are in the US and the initial one with meter was $380 and each sensor was $150. A high price to pay with such a high failure rate. Vet put the second sensor on after first one failed at no cost. They are only good for two weeks and the second one failed at 4 days. We did not have another one put on.
Very best overview on feline diabetes I've ever found...answered all my questions; thank you. One question: where can I find a conversion chart to convert the UK desired range of 5 + 15 mmcl/l to US glucose ranges?
It's a very useful lecture- thank you!
Thank you so much for this ❤
I know a kitten that has gotten the new drugs and it doing very well!
44:50 six adverse reactions to every 100,000 vaccines sold means 6 adverse reactions REPORTED for every vaccine ADMINISTERED. The under-reporting factor is no doubt huge and vaccines sold does not mean vaccines administered. Vets regularly dispose of unused stock.

A very big appreciation goes to Dr IGUDIA on his UA-cam channel who cured my Herpes virus infection with his natural herbs medication and I now live a more comfortable life again.
I’ve got a couple questions about this info. We were kinda taught that an Echo is highly recommended, is this not the case in the UK? Secondly, before treatment, we do a Methimazole trial. Obviously, if you’re using Methimazole as the sole treatment, it’s not a trial but generally if the cat becomes azotémic, we supplement with Soloxine then slowly wean off to let the cat’s body acclimatize and strike a balance with the Methimazole.

Hey guys, I took my cat off tap water and he recovered. I believe it was the minerals in the hard water that were causing this. Even though the vet said that tap water can’t cause it and there were no blockages on his x-ray. When I was at the vet I asked about the water and he said no. He said stress causes it. I literally looked it up on my phone as he took the cat to examine him and within seconds, found tons of evidence that cats who drink tap water in hard water areas are much more prone to cystitis. He said to give him stress drops. The stress drops did NOTHING. He only was healed after I changed the water. He is still stressed out as he and my other cat fight all the time. He hasn’t had an episode and has miraculously recovered after I switched to the distilled water. It must be distilled water. Animals cannot process the chlorine, fluoride or minerals in spring, tap, most bottled water. And refrigerator filters do not filter out chlorine and fluoride. The screw on tap filters do nothing to filter out the chlorine and fluoride either. Many of the pitcher filters do not either. You can get it from any store or have it delivered. The water must read “000” or as close to it as possible. And also I gave the neighbor’s dog only distilled water when they were out of town to work with her and she made a 50% recovery in 6 days! She had osteoarthritis and couldn’t even lay down on her bed properly. It took her like 20 seconds just to sit and she groaned in pain. She is so much more agile and up and trotting around. It says it will take 7-60 days for animals to recover from chlorine and fluoride or mineral toxicity. It is causing arthritis and cancer in animals. Not just that, it’s causing so many other issues with the pets I was pet sitting for. Lipomas, paw issues, skin issues, brain issues, unexplained health issues. You name it, tap and hard tap water were killing the animals I know and love. I started drinking it too and feel much better this week. If it’s the water, maybe this might help. Good luck with this guys!
So helpful to have access to this level of information
Good video. I just took my cat to get checked and she apparently has high blood pressure but her eyes look fine. Ive been given meds to start her on for 28 and recheck. Im wondering now if they had a true reading. Because she can be a stressy girl and bad a 45minute journey and then had to go in without her mummy there, due to the current restrictions. The vet said she could see her neck vein pulsing which is a sign. Just dont want to give meds unnecessarily. I have a much closer vets but i dont trust all vets because of a bad experience i had with my other cat. Is the longer journey going to make a big difference?
Couldnt excess adipose tissue be directly causative for osteoarthritis? as it is an estrogenic tissue that creates a positive feedback loop of estrogen production while also changing the partioning of calories toward additional fat gain over lean body mass? Idk its a well understood mechanism in humans just not sure about cats. Thanks
My cat had kidney problem
Great presentation
I am so glad to share this, Dr Madida from UA-cam cured me of my HIV. I am really grateful to him.
