Preparing Hearts at Home
United States
Приєднався 13 бер 2017
Hi, I'm a wife and momma to 7 blessings, working to prepare their hearts to know God and serve Him with their lives. Since I'm a homeschooling, novice-homesteading, homemaker, our home is the hub of most of my activity. I hope to create videos about topics I'm experienced or interested in and learning more about, including homeschooling, natural healthcare with herbal remedies and essential oils, baking/cooking/canning, and maybe some other topics thrown in. I hope to be an encouragement!

Super helpful! Thanks!!
My daughter is going into third grade but has done Traditional Spelling from Memoria Press in previous years so AGF LA would be a huge change... She's an advanced reader and strong speller and based on the samples I'm having a hard time deciding whether she would be form 1 or 2 for LA. Did you find the spelling to be challenging and effective for your 3rd grader?
I've used the AGF LA form 1 packet for 2 3rd graders so far and for both of them it was a great transition to the more difficult spelling/dictation and grammar in the form 2 LA packet. If your daughter has already done formal spelling through Memorial Press then it may not be challenging enough for her in both the spelling and grammar areas. My kids don't do any formal spelling or grammar until 3rd grade. They just do phonics/early readers and handwriting until then, so for them it's a good fit. Hope that helps!
Hi! I am so thankful you did this video! I’m back and forth with HOD And AGF. I absolutely fell in love with AGF but feel as though maybe HOD would more more interesting for my littles. I don’t know though. This will be our first year homeschooling and love the Charlotte mason philosophy. I’ve already been doing “school” with my youngest, AGF didn’t have an option for him I don’t think and HOD does so thinking about just doing HOD this year and seeing how we like it. Pray for us if you have a moment. A little nervous and excited all at the same time Again, thanks for this informative video!!
Thank you so much for your review on this. I am 99.99% sure ill be going with a Gentle Feast this year for my uocoming 2nd grader❤ I was set on Beautiful feet for Geography so Im trying to see how to fit that in with this. I might just get both
I'm glad it was helpful to you! I think you could pretty easily sub out Beautiful Feet geography. For form 1, geography is scheduled 2 days a week with AGF.
Can you link the video comparing SCM & AGF?
This is the video I was referring to comparing SCM and AGF...m.ua-cam.com/video/yXfZE7KSvCg/v-deo.html
Thank you for this comparison! I've used some of SCM materials, and it didnt quite work for us. But I'm leaning towards AGF. But looking at the website, is the teacher manual no longer available as a printed book? I hate the idea of using an online teachers guide :(
I hope AGF will be a good fit for your family! As far as I know the pri ted teacher's manuals are still an option (I purchased mine for this coming year in November), but if the website isn't giving it as an option it may be that they are out of stock and waiting for a reprint. I would just email them and ask since I know that was the case with several items earlier this year. 👍
It's definitely there now. I checked today
Have you used AGF’s Sight and Sound for teaching reading? I’m trying to decide if we’re going to use it next year.
No, I haven't ever used it or any other CM style reading curriculum before. I have always used The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading by Jessie Wise and have liked it so I couldn't justify buying a whole new curriculum to myself. 😊
Love that you did this. I’ve bought AGF for next year, after using HOD and some SCM in the past. Julie Ross also has a great podcast!
YAY!!! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!! BUSY LIFE.. Totally understand that.. <3 CONGRATULATIONS!! ON BABY 7 (= <3
Thank you so much! 😊
Hi New Subscriber! Welcome for your new Baby. I am doing ambleside online mixed with scm but I am pretty positive I am going to swap over to a gentle feast.
Thanks! I think you will find switching to AGF to be a smooth transition once you get used to the ins and outs of how it's set up. 😊
Which one do you prefer?
For my family size, I really prefer AGF. They are all good options, but I like the ability to have all of my kids studying the same time period and only having to worry about 4 forms instead of 12 grades with AGF.
So do you use a gentle feast for everything?
AGF is a complete curriculum that has most subjects scheduled in the lesson plans. Some subjects (like math, foreign language, art, singing, latin) aren't fully scheduled, but she does give recommendations on what to use and how many days per week to do it. There are a couple subjects I don't personally follow her plans for, like phonics and handwriting, because I had already found something I was happy with before starting AGF.
Thanks for sharing this. I’ve often wondered about HOD and AGF. I wish there was a Canadian option with A Gentle Feast. I’m planning to modify AO for our history cycle for next year. My oldest is catching on well to narration prompts already. I also was not a fan of the 6 year cycle that SCM uses. Not wrong, just a little dragged out imo. I suppose I could utilize it for the ancient history portion in form 2. I Love their living book list. Have you done any of the SCM science/nature studies?
AGF actually does have a Canadian option for each cycle! 👍 I have only used the birds study from SCM that uses the Burgess Bird Book and we did enjoy that. I know they recently updated their science guides, so I'm not sure if they still have the one we used or not.
Are you still using AGF now? Can you compare it to Heart of Dakota? I’ve been looking over AGF and SCM recently. We’ve used HOD for years but I’m looking into other options.
Hi! Yes, we are still using AGF and finding it fits our needs much better than HOD did. Be looking for a compare/contrast video soon!
@@preparingheartsathome I wouldlove to see a comparison of these- I am considering all 3 also for next year!
What are you using for math
We have used Math U See in the past, but switched to SCM's Elementary Arithmetic series about a year ago for my then 1st and 2nd graders and still love it. This year, for my 5th grader we started using the math guides from Beauty and Truth Math, which are Charlotte Mason style math as well and they have been so thorough and good for her.
I really relate to the way you prefer to do the history cycles. I just became a Christian 2 years ago and began transitioning away from a very Waldorf-inspired, somewhat pagan-y homeschool style, and I think ancient Egypt would help my kids get a better understanding of Bible history and context, but a long stretch of ancient history does not appeal to me. I'd much rather switch the second year to something more tangible and obvious to them such as early America, but I'd hate to start with ancient times and not follow through chronologically.
That is wonderful to hear of your salvation a couple years ago!! You can't go wrong with the content of SCM history guides and you're right that it would probably be very helpful to your children in learning/understanding how biblical history intertwines with "regular" history. In the end, it really is just a preference issue regarding the number of cycle years you prefer. But like I said, SCM has wonderful book choices that you don't have to worry whether they're biblically sound or not.
Oh my, my baby woke up and with the phone open and in my hand, I must have added some typos and posted before I finished my thought 😅 Thanks much for your reply. I am going to edit that original comment for future viewers to better understand!
@@preparingheartsathome the most wonderful thing about CM is not worrying over whether or not the content honors God! I am so at ease in that regard. And thank you much for this review! I'm over on their site, shopping now😊
Thank you for this! SCM recommends Beautiful Feet’s ancient if you want to do it in one year, I believe. My *plan* is to use SCM early American and doing bible separately (children’s bible and our own passages we choose). We will also follow a 4 year cycle. How long were the geography lessons? Have you heard of Noeo science? It looks amazing, but is pricey.
I haven't heard of Noeo Science yet...I'll have to check it out! The SCM geography lessons for the guide I used (Early Modern) were scheduled to take more time depending on what form your child is in. Since Bible was scheduled on the same day, it took up to the length of 2 subjects' lessons, so probably 30-40 for form 1 children.
how do you like. the books chosen? & the flow? can you make a comparison of SCM and A gentle feast. what's similar or different and so forth.
So far (we are in the middle of week 21), we are really enjoying both the book choices and the flow of AGF! It has been so nice to have all subjects incorporated and scheduled in the same manual for all of the forms. The only hesitancy about the book choices I have is for a couple of the family science books. Some of the older books contain evolutionary content (which there is always a warning about in the teacher's manual) here and there which I don't agree with as a Christian, but it does provide discussion opportunities with my form 2 daughter. I am not feeling burned out this time of year with AGF like I was with SCM last year, so I guess that's saying something. 😁🤷♀️
@@preparingheartsathome We are using all SCM this year. We do like it. Full Disclosure: we didn’t read letters from Egypt after 2 chapters because we were both bored. I’m thinking of switching because of SCM 6 year history and taking so long to get to American History. Also, I like that AGF is more coordinated in all the subjects. All that to say...what made you feel burnt out with SCM? I don’t want to curriculum hop over and over....but I’m really liking AGF. Thanks!
@@faithful-pursuit Yes, I didn't want to curriculum hop all over either. I think what made me feel burnt out with SCM was just the way their manual is set up with each lesson at a time. AGF is set up a week at a time which allows for more flexibility to change things up amongst each of the forms if you need to do that. It just seems more managable to me, I guess.
@@preparingheartsathome Thank you for taking the time to respond. I watched the video you did previously on the 6 year rotation after I commented. Thanks again!
adorable. her singing
Great review! Did you continue using the "using language well" and "spelling wisdom" guides?
Thanks! Yes, I did consider continuing on using the SCM language arts as I had no complaints about it and felt they were thorough and doing a good job teaching my daughter, however; in the end I decided to give the AGF language arts packets a try at least this year simply to make the curriculum more open and go as well as I liked some of the additional content (like drawing and composition prompts) and knew my daughters would really enjoy that. We are finished with our first term and a couple weeks into the second term with AGF and really quite satisfied with all aspects of it. 😊
I just watched your "leaving Heart of Dakota" video... I'm in the same boat trying to juggle guides and kids. I have ages 12, 10, 9, 8, 6, 4, 3, & 1..... I'm going to try combining 3 in one guide and 2 in another.... I don't know if it will work... I may wind up going to SCM too eventually.
I hope combining some of your kids in the guides will prove helpful for you! If it doesn't SCM or A Gentle Feast may be. We recently started our first year with AGF, after using SCM for the first time last year, and it's going really well so far! I hope you find your groove whichever way you can. 😊
Why didn’t you do the simply Charlotte mason science?
We did use their Burgess Bird Book study with my 2 form 1 students and they both enjoyed it! I haven't tried any of their other science books though.
Very informative and helpful- thank you!
Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful to you!
Hello! Thank you for sharing your video 😊 I am still trying to decide between Heart of Dakota and Simply Charlotte Mason. How have you liked the transition from HOD? Is it easier to combine everyone? Thanks!
So sorry I just saw your comment! If combining your children is important, then I would say SCM is the way to go. The transition to SCM and a more Charlotte Mason approach from HOD was actually very smooth and enjoyable to me and my kids. I just posted a new video of a review of SCM if you're interested. Thanks for watching!
My plan is to buy download and place in my children’s own binders. I have a child in each age group
That sounds like a good plan! We are very much enjoying our year so far with SCM!!
We are using heart of Dakota this year and I am pregnant with number 5. I couldnt do all the guides either but I just decided to do one guide with all of them. We just all listen to all of the stories and they get what they get out of it and do the activities on their own level. In my opinion the assigned books arent really any harder than what is recommended in a combined program. I hope you love simply Charlotte Mason! Lots of people just adore it!
LearningEveryDay That is wonderful that you found a way to use HOD with your growing family all together! We just finished our fourth week with SCM and, so far, it has been wonderful. It feels very similar to HOD because of reading living books and the narration and such, so it's been a great fit for us!
@@preparingheartsathome Aww that is wonderful! Love it when the year is just flowing!! I may look into it for future years when we need another option to combine. I really love everything I have used from Simply Charlotte Mason :0)
I've used HOD for quite a few years with a large family, and just wanted to say I wished I'd checked out Simply Charlotte Mason sooner! HOD is wonderful, but doing that many guides becomes overwhelming. We are making the move to SCM, as well. I'm so glad you're enjoying SCM and it's a good fit for you. Look forward to more videos! Blessings!
Thank you for your videos. I just discovered your channel and it has been so helpful. I have always been between mfw and hod and I just bought the LHFHG curriculum. Didn’t looks beautiful! But did you ever find that you missed picture books with your kids, especially in the younger ages?
Thank you for your kind words! I'm sure you will really enjoy LHFHG! It is a fun guide! My kids really enjoy the history portion in the Family Time Bible a lot because of the beautiful pictures. Since I made this video, we have pulled away from HOD for now. It is a great curriculum that is Christ-centered and academically strong (which I love), but with adding our third child to our home school this school year I found it to be very difficult for me to keep up with 3 different guides as well as managing my home and taking care of the younger children as well! I know there are large families out there who manage it just fine and even find that HOD helps them get it all done, but for me it was just adding stress. :( I never expected to leave HOD until this year so it was a very hard decision that required a lot of thought, prayer, and research. I plan on doing a video here before too long on what we will be using this coming school year. :)
Thank you for your reply! I really look forward to seeing what you choose!
Are the story time stories you read to your daughter for kindergarten easier to understand than the ones recommended that you’ll be using for first grade?
Since they are just another set of Thorton Burgess books, I believe the reading level is the same. For my younger daughter I would still have her narrate back to me what we read, but I would just expect less detail.
Thank you so much for this review.
Best review for HOD I’ve seen! Thank you so much!! Are you still using HOD? I’m seriously considering using it with upcoming 2nd and 6th grader.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Yes, I am still using HOD this year with my 3rd and 1st graders. We are in Bigger and Little Hearts. We are a fairly large family (expecting baby #6 very soon) so I have considered moving away from HOD in order to be able to combine my children for most subjects. It's a big decision that definitely requires some prayer and wisdom! :)
Preparing Hearts at Home thank you for your reply! I understand how hard these decisions can be! Do you and the kids personally enjoy HOD? The book choices and the way the guide works?
@@juliacarvalho3397 Yes, we all enjoy the book choices and the things studied and I can see that my kids have learned a ton! I love HOD...that's part of the difficulty of my decision. :) It is a very strong academic curriculum and very Christ-centered, which I love. My only conundrum is the fact that we have a large (and growing) family and I feel like maybe we should do more subjects together as a family. The guides work very smoothly and it is so helpful to have every area scheduled so that the planning is done for you!
@@preparingheartsathome are you part of their fb groups? I'm part of RtR fb group and I've seen plenty of ladies who use the guides with a large family. I honestly don't know how hard that would be, but I've seen some say they think it's even easier that way since the guides are so age appropriate and take care of the hardworking of planning for you. I'm guessing you're probably already part of the fb groups, but if not, I believe you could get some useful advice and suggestions there from other moms who are in a similar situation as yours. Since you already found a curriculum you love, maybe you can make that work some how. May the Lord guide you in this decision! Thank you so much once again for your reply, it was so helpful!!:)
@@juliacarvalho3397 I am part of the fb groups of the guides I've used so far and I've seen large families talk about how HOD is doable because of the built in independence and that's what I've been holding out for! lol That really starts a lot in CtC, which is still 2 years away for me. I've also been researching more of a relaxed approach to homeschooling that allows more combining of subjects for the kids and a shorter school day. Some of my husband's and my goals are to get more into homesteading (which is very time-consuming!) and allowing our kids to learn through that as well, so simplifying academic subjects might be a good fit for us more as we go along. I'll probably end up doing a video about it all soon! ;)
We love Heart of Dakota:) I need to stop supplementing! 🤣
I am learning that I need to stop that too, as each year goes by! I get caught in the "I've gotta do it just right" trap and try to improve the curriculum instead of just doing it as written. :(
Hello fellow Hoosier! (Well not since you’re in Montana.) I am near Fort Wayne. I am so sorry to hear about your child. It is understandable why you’ve been away.
