@@sagev.5818Although I would’ve liked it too, I guess it makes sense. Phoebus making the speech would give the impression that someone was giving them permission, since he’s a known (ex) captain. Rather than Clopin doing a goofy jig and speaking like some apocalyptic warlord.

@@daleksaan935 I see it differently. Clopin indeed is goofy on a regular basis, but he's the king of the romani, and that's for a reason. When you look at him in The Court of Miracles, for how silly he is, he is also extremely charismatic and has the energy of a true leader. And the two versions of The Bells of Notre Dame introduce us to a much more serious side of his personality, hidden underneath the clowny exterior. I could definitely, in opposition, see him use these two aspects of his personality to make himself the voice of the oppressed. Phoebus never stroke me as a leader in any kind of way which is part of why this speech never seemed to fit him well to me, whereas Clopin absolutely is one, he perfectly understands how to handle a crowd, as seen in both The Court of Miracles and Topsy Turvy. He would know what specific words to use to make them fight Frollo. Plus, I feel like this would have been a lot more symbolic to have Clopin, the gypsy king, lead the crowd in that moment rather than Phoebus who's honestly never been oppressed (on top of having only just returned to Paris and not having been shown to care much about neither the city nor the cathedral).

Haha I think he definitely could pull it off! Joaquín Phoenix has played a lot of weird and unusual characters after all. Or perhaps Sacha Baron Cohen, he did a pretty good job playing Mr Thenardier in Les Mis, he could probably do well in another movie based on a Victor Hugo novel.
