I'm genuinely so happy that there's just been a resurgence of side character love from most people I love making little headcanons for the characters and just building up on the lore for them in my own personal way, so it's always kinda sad to me whenever people mischaracterize them badly ,, Hopefully one day people don't just equate the side characters to "oh they're just niko's friends/people they meet and that's it" Especially that one line that was like "this world will continue existing as long as you remember it" (might've gotten it wrong so feel free to correct me) and it's something that absolutely resonates with me, and i feel that if you only remember Niko and nobody else then the message might've fallen flat personally- Niko's a good character, people can still like em- but i wish there was something different that was happening instead of the same dumbed down Niko thing In short: i love the side characters so much, somehow more than Niko, my bad-

(caution: yappy) i've known oneshot since july 2019 - that's _five whole years_ at the time of this video being published. i don't remember much from the first two years, i know in 2021 i got into OneShot Aftermath because it was a promising mod, but had to leave it somewhere in 2022-2023 for personal reasons. and in the second half of 2023, and throughout pretty much _all of 2024,_ i would occasionally visit r/oneshot, the wretched place. there are so many issues on multiple layers, so i'll go through them one by one. layer 1 is who the content is about. You guessed it! - it's _95% of Niko,_ with a side of Alula and maybe some other _"TOTALLY IRRELEVANT"_ character if the posters are daring. there's a bit of a running joke outside the subreddit that you could post pretty much anything with niko and get 100 upvotes _at least._ layer 2 - we hope you love niko "O"Cs. i've seen so many "original" characters based on just Niko. now one may call me out for having glenfolk and being a hypocrite, but the problem is that you can make an OC of the same species as Niko and still be original. source: Dariioxis ( www.reddit.com/r/oneshot/comments/1dovddl/bit_of_speculations_on_what_i_think_the_oneshot/ and www.reddit.com/r/oneshot/comments/1cx7qr7/since_people_are_posting_their_niko_ocs_heres/ ) hell, if you've been on the subreddit, you probably know "Nico", who is just. Niko. with a yellow scarf. and brighter blue hair. that's it. call me mean but i don't give a shit about how complicated the lore for your "original" character is - the design has to be original too, you know. it's basically like picrew hell. layer 3 - okay, so it's pretty much niko, but it's original, right? *No.* art posted without credit, tracing; and if, god forbid, the art IS made by the poster without any tracing, then... layer 4 - niko is WILDLY mischaracterised in the subreddit. to remind you - Niko is a child. But also, like, 8. and Smart enough. unfortunately that is too complicated, so now we have "fanon!niko" and "arson!niko" (i am dying inside); whereas fanon niko is stupid silly dumb innocent child (that is literally all to it) and arson niko is a personality based wholly on one concept image nightmargin made. innocent child do crime!! innocent child go silly! so silly!! so original!! It's boring. layer 5 - but hold on It Gets Worse! you'd think people _in the subreddit_ wouldn't make any inapporpriate jokes towars characters not even in their teenage years... Wrong! jokes about niko r34 are popularised and not discouraged at all, despite the ironic "do not the cat" and whatever other shit they parrot, NOT TO MENTION the occasional, _definitely intentionally_ sexualised character design, people who rightfully call it out get called "weird" and told "it's just them who think like that". to summarise this general part of the subreddit, i bring up the same anecdote. the target audience for r/oneshot is 14 and 50 with nothing inbetween. (bonus minirant: there was an artist quiz where you had to guess which artist made which oneshot art, and... second half of it is filled with niko. it was boring as hell.) i love OneShot. it really is a beautiful game and despite all the material and screentime that didn't make it into the game, there's still much to explore about the game. and if there's not -- go wild!! speculate, headcanon, make fics, fake shit -- who's stopping you?? multiple people have shown it IS possible before. but the community fell into a state where niko pfps go wild and to outsiders oneshot is probably just "the niko game".
