    Hi, im new to radios. I use a topcom for airsoft but i want to change to a baofeng. All my friends have topcom, how do i know if they are compatible and i can speak to them. Its hard to find info. Also there are too many types of baofeng radio's

    • @kd9fal
      @kd9fal 9 днів тому

      @dennisv2416 I've never seen a topcom radio, so I can't provide much guidance. The biggest thing to watch for is to make sure the baofeng will transmit and receive on the frequency the other radios operate on. On a side note, make sure you are operating legally and have a license or are operating on a license free frequency.

    With the TD-H3 and TD-H8 the same radio can be used either as Amateur Radio (HAM) or GMRS. The difference is in how it is booted, you can boot into GMRS, HAM, or Normal mode. Be aware, when you switch modes, it does a factory reset thus you lose all your settings. Thus, it is very important to use a backup programing software such as RT Systems which is outstanding, Chirp also very good, or Tidradio's own programing software. It does not matter at all whether one purchased the TD-H3 or TD-H8 in either GMRS or HAM version, just boot into the version you want. My purchase was their two pack of the TD-H3 (two radios with four batteries), one remains booted to GMRS the other to HAM. Be mindful, unless you have an FCC Amateur license (HAM) such as the Technician license, General license, or Extra license, do not transmit in HAM mode. Also, for GMRS you must obtain a FCC FRN, pay $35 then within two days you will have your GMRS license emailed to you by the FCC; does not require any test. This license covers your family for ten full years. Hope this helps.

      Wow… THANK YOU!! With over 30 years in the public safety and radio world, I never encountered or thought to identify radios by band. This is a phenomenal concept for “cache” radio inventory. You can quickly identify the band by color - so simple yet brilliant. For most of my labeling, have been using my Rhino 6000 label printer to create high strength adhesive labels with basic info: Make / Model / Firmware Ver. / Band(s) / Type (analog / p25 phase-1 or 2 / DMR / combinations) / Radio ID / Emergency ID / Pri Talkgroup(s) / Group ID / Date placed in service / Date last programmed / CPS Ver last used to program / Battery Capacity / Battery date / Admin Unit y/n? (DMR feature control) / Contact Details / Etc.. It seems like overkill at times, so thinking of going with an “inventory ID” with all details in a db and laminated hardcopy in each case. Using the color coding method for band might be made more functional with the ID printed on the color coded label or tag..? What are YOU using to label your antennas? Heat shrink tubing? (but.. possible heat damage to antenna?) Tape? (would likely look messy and get all “gooey” with time and heat) Thanks Sir. Nice channel & videos!

    • @kd9fal

      @@PowderMill they are Motorola Antenna ID bands. As far as a database, I use snipeit. It is an asset management database for IT equipment, but I have made it work for my radio equipment. I can assign radios to a location, user, kit, etc. Makes it easy to keep track of maintenance, do audits, etc.

      The /\/\ XPR-7550e is a nice radio, especially compared to most Chinesium DMR radios (OTHER than Hytera) But ONLY if the radio is being issuing to users and isn’t for personal use or use for techs or interop work. The radio is fairly rugged, it has decent batteries and accessories, etc… The only real dilemma?? It has *ZERO* FPP capabilities. The only “solutions” to this limitation are: A: Flashing to AA Asian model which supposedly supports FPP functionality (but I d never seen one “in the wild”) B: The other option = The real crappy & extremely limited option board product from a company located in Georgia. It is ultra limited and quite pricey$$. It permits you to use VFO type programming of a single channel, allows you to modify: tx-freq / rx-freq / CC / slot / (and possibly CTCSS /DCS for analog use).

      Your best bet to monitor your local sherrifs office is to by a scanner. If you don’t know your way around the xts5000 or which ever radio you may use don’t try to use it as a scanner. You just keep mentioning XTS5000 Model 3. Do you know if the radio is the correct band for your local sherif. Do you know what type of system the sherif department is using? If your sheriff’s office is on a trunked system, putting a radio on that system to monitor is frowned upon and illegal. There may be a reason that they won’t program it for you. The software is available online. It just requires some searching to find, meaning it’s not gonna be the first link in google.

    0:41 FRS DMR sounds interesting. Hopefully Midland or someone else makes an FRS/GMRS DMR radio. Motorola is too expensive for me. 😳

      I have it in there as a just because. And use it for testing purposes. I really like the Motorbo line from Motorola

    I would love to be able to have this XTS 5000 model 3 program for my local sheriff's department.Just to listen also I would like to have the weather band I got this off of ebay and I wish I could listen to my local sheriff

      You will need the Astro25 CPS to program your XTS5000. As long as they are conventional p25 or Analog and your XTS5000 is the correct frequency band, you will be able to listen. NOAA Weather Radio operates in the VHF band, so if your sheriff office and xts is VHF, you are all good.

    Do you have the CPS from Motorola or does it work with other programming software?

      It only works with Motorola CPS.
