Well, liars don't change much, do they? Today they blame the other for "exact things" that they are guilty of. So, Quannah Parker was accused of lying? The alleged reason...to protect the family? Whose family needed protecting if the truth came out? Hmmm. I want to give a "Rest in Peace" to a man who was related to Quannah Parker and was my history teacher in school. Mr. Quannah Cox, who looked so much like Quannah Parker. Good lecture.

Speaking of Mrs. Baird and “Blue Bell” ice cream, do you remember Dirk West hosting an afternoon kid’s show where he taught them how to draw cartoons? Well, many, many years after his kiddie cartoon show was canceled, I got to hear him reminiscing about doing that show. He said the sponsors were really riding his butt every day to mention their ice cream more and more. In every episode, after he finished doing the cartoon drawing for the kids, he had them all eating Blue Bell ice cream on the air. And, of course, he had to embellish and tell those kids just how much he appreciated them and just how much they were ALL going to enjoy that “delicious Blue Bell ice cream!!” But, one day after the cartoon drawing, when it was time for all the kiddos to enjoy that delicious Blue Bell ice cream, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed one little red-headed fat boy wasn’t eating any ice cream. In hindsight, he said he regretted making an example out of that one kid, but he went ahead and pointed him out: “So, I see you’re not eating any ice cream! Can you tell me why you’re NOT eating delicious Blue Bell ice cream??” That little fat redheaded boy had a voice like a loud bull frog, West said. And, back then, there was NO way to censor what that kid yelled out…..”Cause I got diarrhea!!”

I also learned about Coke Stevenson from Robert Caro’s second LBJ volume. Gov. Stevenson was an authentic Texan and a real man, fully equal in my mind with the nation’s founders and Lincoln. If we had a dozen of him in DC today the country would be in much better shape.

At about the 39:00 minute mark or so, a question is asked who was in charge. The author started the answers good, he just didn't realize some mistakes. The federal army would be in overall charge of the search of the rampaging Comanche, the "Texas Rangers" would be the scouts for they knew the land. When the author comments about taking Cythinia Ann to Camp Cooper, the photo of the Commander is Nathan Evans who would resign in months to join the Confederate Army and fight in Virginia. So not all of the soldiers were yankees stationed in Texas. I don't believe Quanah lied, what would he gain? His father Peta Nocana had died in'65-66. And he was questioned years after his death. Even if he would have been in camp, he would naturally try to help his mother. I know l would, if enemies were near!

What I find funny is that the Quinn book which is looked down upon here, is the book that has piqued my interest in this obscure history and that led me to this presentation and to subsequently buy the Carlson and Crum book. Obviously reading several perspectives on things helps the average Joe get a sense of what may or may not have happened.

Maybe I do not know my Indians but, none of this makes sense. Can anyone explain why Cynthia was there alone with such a small band? Why would her 7yo son not have been there with her? 11yo Quannah I could understand being with his father( maybe). Can we be sure the woman taken was really Cynthia? So, she said " Me,Cynthia"..big deal. Did this woman bear a resemblance to the Parkers? She supposedly didn't speak English. Did she ever relearn the language? In her remaining life, did she ever talk to anyone about her life among the Commanches( an actual account)? Did she ever explain why her other sons weren't there? What have I missed here. This isn't new to me, as I learned about Cynthia years ago.

I haven't read Williams book yet but for him to assume anything about a disputed part of history without bothering to research it sounds to me like shoddy historiography. no matter how recommended it comes, readable it might be or how well promoted. And that goes for other accounts claiming to be definitive. Now that I think about it there is an account somewhere whose source escapes my faulty memory which paraphrases Cynthia Parker, after her recapture, as speculating that her husband surely misses her. . . Good research by the speaker and damned good presentation..

I also appreciate your memories in the David Marshall interview. Had your dad won the 1948 Senate race, no history books would mention the name Lyndon Johnson and much of the history that I've loved in my 69 years would be quite different. I am not a Texan having lived the last 47 years near Dayton, OH. I find the story of you and your family one that many fans of history would appreciate. Thank you for sharing. (Jim Pennell)
