Midnight Kitchen
Приєднався 13 вер 2011
Welcome to the Midnight Kitchen family! Join my channel for cooking and baking tips, recipe-less approaches, with hints of food science! We will explore the up-and-coming restaurants, must-eat- trendy hotspots, - and try recreating them at home with a reasonable budget.
The Midnight Kitchen concept was born in 2009- the year I started graduate school in the middle-of-nowhere NY. Dinners were prepared post midnight- the time when I had a few hours to destress from my overworked and stressed state. Cooking was a necessity and how I grew closer to my Chinese roots. It slowly morphed into the strong passion I have today, and so much more - an appreciation for diversity, diverse cultures and flavor profiles, cooking techniques, and the science of cooking. As a scientist by day, I am curious about unusual flavor pairings, mashups of techniques and cuisine types. It's ultimately about what taste and smells great- and looks appetizing too.

Why your voice is so scary 😮
Thanks for the feedback. I’m working on improving my audio setup.
Everything looks so delicious!!! ❤❤❤
Amazing for a food court! Thanks for the support.
I enjoy your commentary. If you tell us the cost of the meal it would be helpful. Thanks.
Thanks for the support and feedback! Will make sure to note the final bill/pricing details.
0:27 This is in hillsboro, not portland
Ahh, yes. Thanks for the correction.
Sorry no offence not trying to be mean but little recommendation the narrator’s tone of voice is a bit too low and doesn’t match this kind of food video
Thanks for the feedback. I’ve been getting the same comment for that video- I’m trying to improve on my audio setup and video editing.
OMG THE PRICES ARE RIDICULOUS!!
Yeah, we think so too. Overall large portions and authentic flavors though.
not bad
Give Gloucester Cafe a try next time. Their chicken chow mein with black bean sauce is delicious!
@@calvinsue1you are joking right? They are horrible
@@LarryNg-mx8qz not compared to most of the HK cafes in L.A. 😂
Such beautiful bags you got. Now I want one, I’m sure it’s sold out 😢
Thanks for the support. Check multiple Trader Joe’s- both near me still had a big pile left
Not having Hapa Pizza on this list is a war crime.
Will visit for sure! Thanks for the recommendation.
What restaurant is this
At home- we got this from a Chinese grocery store in Richmond BC
I'm sorry. I thought I switched to watching a murder mystery rather than about food. Maybe a different narrator or a different way of describing.
Thanks for the feedback- I’ll work on improving my narration style. I think it’s how I talk into the microphone.
bssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Have you reviewed Tian Fu in Bellevue/Factoria yet?
I was there last weekend!! Will add to my upcoming video.
@@midnight_kitchen thank you!
Try driving up at night to that front door, looks like a warehouse that's closed. Just stayed last weekend, best hotel experience in years.....not even especially expensive. Best in room Bath Tub Ever.
Definitely a unique entrance. We enjoyed the deep soaking tub as well.
I 💗 🕊️ Seagulls. They are like friendly, smart flying 😼
Haha, most of the time. The sea gull came from behind and brushed across my face.
Should only be $3 each roll.
Yeah, the pricing is a bit high in that area (probably due to rent in the district). Do you have a go to hand roll place?
Thank you! I am headed to Bellevue for work and I am excited to try some great Asian food!! YUM!
So my great restaurants here! Hope you enjoy your stay :)
If you are into hotpot, check out all you can eat Dollar Shop Hot Pot in Richmond. There's a special deal, I think, after 9pm.
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve been to the Dollar Shop but not the all you can eat option. I’ll put it on my to-try list.
I find it so facinating that people come to this area from the US and enjoy the food and sights. 😊
We love it!! The food is phenomenal:)
The Richmond Public Market meat shop on the first floor east side. Has the best roast pork I have ever tasted. I just love how the fat is melted between the meat and the skin. That's just me though. They don't have it on Thursday for some reason. It's like $15/lb but worth every penny!
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve not tried that one- will add it to my must try list!
You can bring sushi back to Seattle? Can you bring savory buns back to U.S.?
We drive and go through the Washington border. We bring back sushi and cooked meats all the time (but in a cooler with lots of ice).
Appreciate your honest review! The decor is cute but too bad the food/drink wasn’t as good as expected
Thanks for your support :) I wish the food was better too.
Nice video!!
Thanks for the support!!
the third place got their recipe from the original stall owners. The original owners sold out. just before the pandemic. They ran a HK style noodle, rice roll and zong shop. The rice roll style is more similar to what you will find in HK dim sum shops, since the original owners showed them that. As for the first place. I think its the batch of meat you got. When I went with my SO, we got their beef rice roll. It was quite good.
Thanks for the support and info! I’ll try the first cheung fun place out again. Let me know if you have any favorites or must try places :)
The best pizza in the state is Cloverleaf Tavern in Tacoma. If you have not tried it, you owe it to yourself to go have a pizza there might go to is always pepperoni and sausage.
Thanks for the suggestion!! Will check out for sure.
Love the recs! Keep em coming!
Thanks for the support!!
Expensive...
Will post more options in the upcoming videos.
I went to the Hello Nori in Richmond, I love the rolls and I also got the Salmon Oshi, that’s also delicious. 2 other restaurants I like on Robson are Saku and Ramen Danbo. The Ramen Danbo there tastes better than the Seattle location.
Thanks for the tips- I’ll try out Ramen Danbo! I’ve been to Saku and enjoyed it.
Yummy. One of my favorite dim sum items 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💕💕💕
Us too :)
Might want to consider a different narrator 😂
Thanks for the feedback- I’ll work on improving my audio equipment:) I’m a a one-woman team :P
DAVE FISH AND CHIPS IS MUCH BETTER THAN PA JO
Thanks for the suggestion! We will check Dave out next time :)
Wow, I never thought of trying to make these at home. Would definitely be interesting to try it. Thank you! Btw, you got a new subscriber from Malaysia.👍
Thanks for the support :) I’ve made a video on how to do this at home. ua-cam.com/video/AXs7XOx5BrI/v-deo.htmlsi=AcsUfd4fYAdSGXGj
Where’s “ best rice roll “ at Parker place?
I’ve not been to Parker in some time- let me try out their stalls and report back :)
😆 Nice pun 0:48 “ Let the Fun begin “
Haha glad you enjoyed it too :)
I really like the style of your vlogs where you speak authentic Cantonese describing names of the food, taste and texture. It’s a good balance of Hong Kong and Western vibe added to the vlog makes it easier to understand for someone who is not too familiar with Hong Kong / Cantonese foods. For audience who is looking for good food and new places to eat you have incorporated in the video.
Thanks for the kind words and support :)
I have been to Hei Hei. It was a long wait, but very delicious. It was the best I've had
Glad to hear you liked it too :) We went first thing in the morning so parking was easier too.
M Cafe out in Coquitlam. I haven't been there in a few years, but it was pretty good.
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll add it to my list :)
I'm sorry but IMO you went to 2 of the worst cha chaan tengs in the area. I've been to both and there are waaay better ones around. I don't know if you've tried these yet but I would recommend Happy Day Cafe by the Walmart Center and Van Tea Cafe on Capstan Way. Both are usually very busy so you'll have to wait if you go during peak hours.
Thanks for the suggestion!! I’ll check those two places out.
The voice is hard to listen to
Thanks for the feedback. I’m working on improving my voice recording system so I don’t sound like I’m whispering all the time.
This is neat, thanks. Where are your very favorite cha chaan tengs in BC?
I think I prefer Lido Restaurant for the classic experience. I’m still working on discovering more hidden gems.
You went to one of the best food cities in the USA, and you started the day with Burger King? Well, bless your heart.
Heh, we actually rarely eat fast food so we try during our road trips.
Burger King... hard pass .. turned off your creepy voice video immediately.
western lake chinese seafood restaurant is best dim sum place in vancouver.. cheaper than the others and better too ! ... good videos .thanks for sharin eh
Thanks for the recommendation and support! Will try it next time.
Richmond is my food mecca. Every time I go there, I leave stuffed. Great video!
Thanks for your support :)
are they still selling the collectors meals? i can’t order it thru the app
I think it varies depending on the McDonald’s- I’m not seeing it at my local McDonald’s
@@midnight_kitchen ohh okay gotcha
How was the seasoning of the rice at each spot? I tend to like my sushi rice fairly well seasoned (like at Genki if you've been there). Ive found that buffet type places tend to have very bland rice.
FOB Sushi was seasoned, but several pieces were on the over-acidic side (I think it’s a consistency issue). The fish and all toppings were great. I love sushi had the best rice flavor (and seasoning). Katsu-ya had good flavor but the rice texture and grain type not as good as I love sushi.
@@midnight_kitchen thank you
The line is long, not giant 😊 Thank you for your video.
Wish you had included parking advice.
Thanks for your support and feedback. I’ll try to include parking tips for upcoming videos. For the spots mentioned in this video, we circled around the lot until we found something. I suggest going off hours if possible (depending on the place), and park farther out if it’s an outdoor restaurant.
Why is the narrator whispering? Ai-ya!
My apologies- I’m working on a new audio recording setup. Will improve my audio…
manners
The one in Bellevue is not good horribly noisy , expensive , very limited menu. Quality not Vancouver standard … I won’t go back
Unfortunately I had the same experience- I hope they improve after some time.
We had a similar disappointing experience just this past week. Very overpriced and flavorless dim sum. Not worth a visit- will not go there again.
Very unfortunate- was hoping for the same Richmond/Vancouver Sun Sui Wah standard
The voice over sound like she's ready to have sex.
