Twist lock vs flip lock...?
Переглядів 15821 день тому
From discussions with thousands of photographers over the years, we've come across two common myths around twist locks vs flip (or lever) locks. 1. A twist lock tripod is slower to set up 2. The leg will fall out of your twist lock tripod We don't agree with these, and here Ian at Vanguard (a definite tripod geek) tries to explain why these aren't true, alongside some additional benefits of twi...

Hi @ashley_c and thanks for the feedback. You can get an idea of scale from this video by Joan Vendrell: ua-cam.com/video/LnTLIO4D7xw/v-deo.htmlsi=87HaEXovUVrkgAvK I hope that helps. Ian at Vanguard
Video molto utile, grazie 😊
A good twist lock only needs a 90 degree turn and hence only one 'action' for the close. Should be faster than you showed really (in fact you did it on the close action)
Thanks for the comments @largeformatlandscape. In my experience, very few are just 90 degrees (just our Alta Pro 2+ from our range which has a stop and lock/unlock marker, but loses the easy clean functionality), but I may be missing some competitors brands, so next time I'm in a dealer's store I'll do a proper check and feedback here. That said whether 90-180 degrees, the main reason for the speed is that many experienced photographers will still use the "flip lock technique" shown where they over-loosen (if that's a phrase) and extend each section at a time, which is why they consider the locks slow. On the speed shown, I completely agree. The emphasis was on demonstrating the technique and not "race" speed. Fewer sections will also make it much faster as fewer locks on each to deal with. Might be interesting to set up a #tripodrace forum 🙂 Ian at Vanguard
100% agree twist lock is the obvious choice. Every thing you mention is correct. Plus if you are a landscape photographer like myself photographing in low light conditions. The twist lock method is easier to operate and lock again.
My problem is that large backpacks also have large compartments. Unfortunately, you can't fit more of your small equipment like an amateur MFT camera and lenses in there, the small items fly around in the compartments that are too big. If the compartments were smaller, the remaining space could be used for other things. Is it possible to separate the compartments in the small S41 so that you can take one lens from the left and the other from the right without the two lenses bumping into each other in the middle? PS: Could you also publish your videos on Odysee? I feel pretty stupid having to endure two adverts from youtube to be able to see the advert from Vanguard ;-)
Hi @justmythought7658 You can separate the compartments so that you can take one lens from the left and the other from the right without the two lenses bumping into each other in the middle. PS. Sorry you have to watch the ads, we get the frustration. We'll have a look at Odysee, but with all the different alternatives out there it's easy to get spread too thin

Which is the most compact backpack which can fit D750 , 24-70 and 70-200 and 50mm
Hi @mandarw86 It depends on the exact lenses, but assuming the following dimensions (from a quick Google search): D750 : 140 x 115 x 80mm 24-70 : 85 x 135mm 70-200 : 90 x 200mm 50mm : 70 x 55mm With the 70-200 fitted and a bit of safety margin for dividers, then I would estimate you need a bag with internal dimensions of at least 300mm tall, 200mm wide and 130mm deep. Before making any final decision I would recommend lay out your kit in the rough layout of the bag to check that this assumption is correct, or visit a local dealer with your kit, though they may not have all the bags in stock. Based on this, in the VEO Adaptor series I would recommend the R44: VEO Adaptor R44: Internal dimensions: 430 x 220 × 160mm External dimensions: 450 x 260 × 220mm www.vanguardworld.co.uk/search?type=production&q=r44 Other bags you could consider are: VEO City B37: Internal dimensions: 380 x 220 x 140mm External dimensions: 400 x 260 x 225mm www.vanguardworld.co.uk/search?type=production&q=b37 VEO DISCOVER 42: Internal dimensions: 410 x 220 x 170mm External dimensions: 420 x 270 x 215mm www.vanguardworld.co.uk/products/veo-discover-42 As you can see, there isn't much difference between them so it's down to personal choice. does the small backpack have the same belt buckle as the big one?
Hi @vlasenkophotographer - The smaller VEO Select 37BRM does not include a waist strap as it's designed for a smaller, lighter kit.
Pleased I found this video - as a Vanguard ambassador with 3 of your bags I think its time to add a fourth - and this will be perfect for Street Photography shoots I've got coming up
Watching it for the third time.
This must be the coolest camera bag advertising ever. Love it.
Thank you so much, this is a very helpful presentation of this backpack, I'm quite interested in it!
Will this bag go through airport carry on?
Hi there, we always recommended checking with your airline as they vary across the board.
Jaká je šířka popruhu v nejširším místě?
i just ordered Alta pro 2 tripod and the knob of center column isn't working and i can't use it to make the center column horizontally please help me
Hello and thank you for using Vanguard products. The knob on the side of the centre column should rotate 90 degrees in order to operate the multi angle system. If it cannot be rotated, we can only assume that there is unfortunately an issue with your tripod and this will need to be taken up with your supplier.
Hi @enasahmed7650. As you are replying on this video thread with the information on how to use the multi-angle central column, Neil is right. Unfortunately it appears that your tripod is faulty, as can happen with any manufactured product. We're happy to try to help you get it sorted. Assuming you bought it in the UK (which may not be the case as we are lucky to have a large international audience), then please email info@vanguardworld.co.uk with a short video that demonstrates the issue and a copy of the receipt. The team can then work out the best next steps for you. If you have bought the product outside the UK, then the best thing is to contact the dealer you purchased it from. They should be best placed to resolve the issue. If they are not able to, please email info@vanguardworld.co.uk with all the details above, and we will try to help contact the Vanguard team in that country to help you resolve the issue. Ian at Vanguard
@@vanguardphotouk_1986 thank you i will do so
can you make the top compartment in the S41 and S46 larger by inserting the divider lower or even complete remove it so I can put 1-2 Jackets in top compartment? I cant find this information in whole internet :(
Hello and thank you for your interest in the Vanguard VEO Adaptor S models. The top shelf in both the S41 and S46 is hinged at the rear, so may be folded down but not changed in position.
Will zhiyun crane 2s gimbal fit in this bag with camera drone lenses and other equipments?
Hi @ironman9143 We're not familiar with the gimbal, but looking online the dimensions seem to be 45 x 23 x 7cm. If you look at the internal dimensions on the VEO Adaptor R48 they are 48 x 26 × 16cm. Based on this it should fit. If not it should fit on the outside in the tripod holder or using the side pocket and moving the tripod strap to the side. That said, the gimbal's shape makes it difficult be 100% sure and the best thing is to try it out in a local dealer. If you fit the gimbal to the outside, then you can put a wide range of kit inside, but it's difficult to advise as it depends on your specific kit. I hope that helps Ian at Vanguard
Just ordered one, looks extremely well designed and engineered!
Thank you 🙂
@@vanguardphotouk_1986 Feels super solid and versatile. Beautiful machined parts! Can support my GFX camera and lenses with ease. And still lightweight.
Nice bag, is there a laptop or tablet section and if so what size does it take?
Hello and thank you for your interest in Vanguard products. Both sizes of the VEO City Shoulder bags have a tablet/laptop compartment: S30 11" tablet (compartment is 260x180mm): S36 13" laptop (compartment is 320x220 mm).
This is actually a cool looking and functional bag. This was well explained and feels so natural. Im looking to buy this bag right now. Thank you Vanguard!
By the way I can't see this bag for sale anywhere.....I live in ireland
Hi there, we have them available on our website www.vanguardworld.co.uk/search?type=production&q=b37
That makes me want this bag just to put my hair bands in....well done Tilly
Hi ! Do a canon r and a 70-200 both fit together in a s46 ?
Thank you for your interest in the Vanguard VEO Adaptor S46. Assuming you have one of the EOS R 70-200 lenses, either will fit when attached to the body.
Love my Alta Sky 66. I can fit any of my dslr and mirrorless cameras attached to my 600mm f/4 VR, with the FTZ adapter and Teleconverter. Fits perfectly. Looking to buy the S46 or R48.
Brilliant and so much better at presenting than the rest of us!
This bag looks nice. I was trying to get in touch what's someone to see if I could get a promo. I was trying to not only review one but show how great it is after 6 months and 1 year. Nobody from this company reaches back out. I really wish they would as I'd be thrilled to Showcase this product.. I need something that I can carry my Canon R5 with my 500 mm F4 as well as my R6 Mark II with the RF 100 to 500 and then maybe a wide-angle lens and a small drone. I've already purchased like six bags and none of them come close to what I need.
Hi @photobeast. Sorry we've not responded to previous attempts to reach out to us, but we can't find any messages we've missed. I'm sure that you'll understand that we get a lot of requests for free product and we have to limit what we can supply and to whom, so any contact may have been lost in that. For product reviews in the UK we work with selected media brands and our Vanguard Ambassadors, so supplying free product outside of that group is extremely rare. On the product, we're confident that the Alta Sky 68 will work, but so too might the slightly smaller new Alta Sky 62. It's difficult to be precise as everyone's kit and layout preferences is slightly different. Best advice would be to pop in to your local dealer with your kit to check before you buy. I hope that helps Ian at Vanguard - Alta Sky 62: www.vanguardworld.co.uk/products/alta-sky-62 - Alta Sky 68: www.vanguardworld.co.uk/products/alta-sky-68
@@vanguardphotouk_1986 I really appreciate the response. I actually want the biggest bag you have. I have about four bags now that I've wasted close to $1,000 on and every one of them is too small. I need a bag that can hold my Canon R5 with a 500 mm F4 attached together ready to go on one side and on the other side I want my Canon R6 Mark II with the RF 100 to 500 attached ready to go and then maybe my drone and a wide-angle lens. If I can fit all that in one place I'd be as happy as a fly in honey
Great demonstration Tilly
Since I see the Vanguard Veo 3 263AB advertised everywhere (probably to clear old stocks), I'd be curious if someone could tell me the small difference between the models - I imagine that the Veo 3 is the older model to the Veo 3+? Lastly, although I can look it up on their site, what's the weight difference between the standard 3 and the 3T model?
Hi @cardboardmusic It does get complicated with all the tripods, but there's a lot in our model name so bear with me... VEO 3 is our latest generation traditional tripod which is CNC machined, but just has a traditional up/down central column. Adding the "+" to make it VEO 3+ shows that it has the multi-angle central column which can move almost 360º in any direction. This makes it perfect for almost any style of photography, from macro to landscape, and it's great for food or product photography. Adding the "T" to make it the VEO 3T+ indicates it's travel sized. We define this as any tripod under 56cm with a head on (the current IATA maximum hand luggage guidelines), but most of our travel tripods are well below this. The numbers show maximum leg diameter and number of sections. For example "263" means 26mm maximum leg diameter and 3 sections. The first letter after that is material (A = Aluminium and C = Carbon). The letters after that show the head, but this has more variations, so we recommend you check descriptions for the exact head. As a rule of thumb B = Ball Head, P = Pan-Head and V = Video Head. The weight difference is therefore harder to be precise on. It depends on the leg diameter, the type of central column, whether full sized or travel, and which head is fitted. As a rule of thumb, the difference in weight between the VEO 3 and the VEO 3+ is around 200-300g due to the multi-angle central column mechanism. That said, we always recommend you check the models you've shortlisted. Sorry for the long reply, but I hope that helps. Ian at Vanguard
@@vanguardphotouk_1986 That's brilliant, thank you so much. Perfect information.
Bright yellow interior and toggles isnt great for wildlife photographers which is a real shame as it looks a very nice well thought out bag.
Hi Philip. We understand the comment, and it’s a balance. The toggles and interior are designed to easy to use. Orange toggles make the zips easier to find, and orange interior makes gear in the bag easier to find. We get positive feedback on this from many photographers, and asked why all our bags don’t have it. So it’s a difficult balance. In reality this bag is designed for long lenses, so odds are you’re some distance from the wildlife that you’re photographing, and chances of them seeing the toggles is low. If you’re that close enough to the wildlife that they can make out the toggles, chances are you’ll be in a hide of some sort so the bag will be hidden anyway. If not, then the presence of the human squirming into position for the shot is probably going to be more distracting to the wildlife. If the colour of the toggles remains an issue, they can be changed to a darker colour. We don’t provide them at the moment, but we’ll speak to the design team to see what we can do as it is something that is sometimes raised. On the interior, we would assume the wildlife would notice someone setting up a camera when they arrive on location. The movement and sound would scare any wildlife away before the photographer settles down. This is the only time that the bag needs to be open, so the interior of the bag is only a small part of the distraction. Once set up in position, you can also simply face the rear of the bag away from the location of the wildlife and they’re unlikely to see it if you need to open it. At the same time, it should be easier for you to find your lens, battery, SD card, etc against the light background, so less time fumbling around, moving making sound which is equally likely to scare any wildlife away. So while we completely understand the immediate reaction, the reality is that the touches of orange are unlikely to be the only (or even biggest distraction) to the wildlife you’re there to photograph. That said, we will definitely follow up on the toggles option. I hope that helps. Ian at Vanguard
Specifications mention a 8" tablet compatibility but there seems to be space for a bigger tablet. Has anyone tried a 11" tablet in the bag in the tablet sleeve or otherwise?
Hello and thank you for your interest in the VEO City CB29. The best answer is to give you the tablet compartment dimensions which are 260 x 180mm and can accommodate some 11" tablets.
@@NeilVanguard hi. Thanks a lot. :)
Has anyone flown with the 58t in the carry-on baggage?
Hi @pjdilip Unfortunately the Alta Fly 58T is 28cm deep to accommodate pro level kit with grips, so is too deep to be airline compatible on any airline we know. We'd always recommend checking a website like this to stay in touch with the latest guidelines: www.skyscanner.net/news/where-should-i-go-uk/cabin-luggage-guide-hand-baggage-sizes-and-weight-restrictions Ian at Vanguard

I recently purchased this tripod. My last tripod was a Gitzo (not sure of model, but it had the horizontal arm like the VEO3t), it was expensive, heavier and not as well executed as this Vanguard. I’m really impressed with this tripod. The rotating center column is very well designed and engineered. The whole thing is solid too. It’s not light enough for long hikes and vacations - but it is portable and packable for short hikes and perfect for macro work. Superb concept. Thoroughly recommended.

I have a simliar sentiment when it comes to Gitzo and Vanguard. I bought a GItzo thinking i'll treat myself. But when it came down to functionality the Vanguard operated on a whole other playing field. I literally put it through everything, even in the middle of rivers. Vanguard treated me well until I broke the leg lock for the angle. The gitzo in contrast I've had a foot unthread itself twice and fall on the trail I found it once but the other time I didn't, I had another dial unthread itself and fall off on the trail, surprisnghly found that tiny thing but after that I lost all confidence in Gitzo. I guess its just made for indoors. Never again will I sway from Vanguard.
How do you tighten with the screw leg adjustiments, not flip lock???

I just purchased this bag model from Amazon, Joan. I cannot find the spare toggle straps that lock thru' the two slot tape seams on the rear panel of the rucksack - for attachment of my tripod. Should these be included with the bag ? Thank you, Andrew.
Hello Andrew and thank you for using Vanguard products. The straps are in the mesh zipped pocket within the roll top.
Thank you, Neil - & yes, I did find them before you posted your answer - I've just been frenetically busy; your response is appreciated; incidentally, should I wish to purchase more of same - or indeed anything else related to this acquisition, I assume it is all readily available on your website ? Is the Vesta 233AP more stable than the 203 and is the pan head the same? Cheers!
Thank you for your interest in Vanguard tripods. The 233AP is indeed more stable as it has 23mm rather than 20mm diameter legs. The head on both models is the PH-23.

I can honestly say from out the box it was so easy to master and outdoors in bad weather never caused me any problems. My other tripods made me feel like and look like Mr Bean. Just think your tripod most likely will out live your camera body . So it makes sense to get a good one .Most important it will protect you and it from poor workmanship there is nothing worse on a shoot than messing about with a poorly built tripod . The vanguard is quickly and easily altered and returned to carry position. Spend less time getting the camera ready to take photos and more time composing.😊
Sorry @mylucksmiles but not sure what the "m 1 A" is...
What I have found is that most camera back packs all follow similar designs. If you think about weight all the weight is balanced on your shoulders by two straps a early design mistake never corrected only alted design is everything. In truth I would have thought that before now designers would have designed the weight of the bag to be supported by larger body area almost like those crazy shoulder pads of the 80s (designer shoulder pads.) This is where your bags failed. All the firm shoulder area and around the neck area is not used to limit the strain on my neck area. This is down to the fact the two straps on a bag add pressures that forces my neck to take the strain . This is because not all the shoulder area around my neck is not utilized correctly . Imagine putting on a body warmer. Then rebuild the camera bag to fit around the carrier more like a body warmer or Waitecoat .Point two, tripods the side or centered back pocket for carrying the tripod will unbalance the bag. Making the bag feel heavier. So a travel tripod may feel heavier than its actual weight because it's unbalanced. I walk miles with my bag they are all a nightmare. Back to the body warmer and the idea of doors. A firm or plastic moulded back panel that fits over the shoulders ( a bit like American footballers use ) supported by a full body warmer style stripping. All padded to soften the weight. You enter the bag though the back of the area that is against the body (your back )while being carried. The tripod is fitted at the top of the bag as it will help counter balance the load of the camera bags gear inside the bag ..once you take off the back pack you lay it on to the ground. Then from each Conner of the bag pack and in the middle of the bag there will be a bubble or foot to keep it off ground when placed on a level - ish floor or ground. So basically the back and shoulders supports are a waste coat. The whole bag design zipped up at the front of the carrier so much support this way.your stuff is out of date a waste coat design would make carrying easier as it is something you wear not carry. All those extra pockets space .Text me back if you would like more info.. Thanks for reading .
Thank you for your message and wow, that's a lot to take in 🙂 Camera bags are always an incredibly tough product to design. You can get 1,000 photographers in a room who all claim to have the same requirement for a camera bag, and then show them the bag that fits their brief, and it won't be perfect for any of them. There will always be something not quite right, even if it's just the colour or the position of a strap. To try and respond to your points: Point 1: A "body warmer" design instead of shoulder straps: It's an interesting concept, but the reason I suspect it hasn't caught on is the need for layering to manage body temperature. With a body warmer style you are forcing the user to add a layer of clothing which is probably fine in winter, but in summer may lead to overheating. It also may be uncomfortable if you have items in your pockets below the "body warmer" as these will be pressed into your body (and inaccessible). And there are many more concerns. I guess that's why every backpack on the market continues to use shoulder straps. That said, we recognise the need for comfort and for maximum comfort we would always recommend: - well padded shoulder straps - with an adjustable chest strap (to hold the straps together as you travel) - a good waist belt for longer trips (takes a lot of the load off the shoulders and holds the bag steadier) - cinch clips at the top of the shoulder straps (to pull the bag in tight to your shoulders and movement) Point 2: Tripods on top of the bag: Carrying a tripod will always be a challenge, and that's definitely an option, but it may also make the bag top heavy and unwieldy (especially with a full sized tripod sticking out either side). Many bags also offer a top compartment for personal kit, or fast top access to your camera, and we know from speaking to many photographers that this is a function they appreciate. Placing the tripod on the top would take this option away. That said it may be possible for selected bag designs and the smallest travel tripods. From our experience, the key issue is how well the tripod is secured (including if fitted on the top) as any movement will be magnified, unbalancing you as you walk. For longer trips it may be easier just to fit additional straps to hold the tripod secure. Point 3: Plastic moulded back: That too is an option. We do something similar in our VEO Active Pro Trekking Series where there is a built in aluminium frame that is designed to hold the bag securely, and is shaped to fit the back. Please don't take any of the above as a flippant response. I do recognise the need for comfort and the design team are constantly reviewing this, but different series are designed for different purposes and kit. By the sounds of it you need something designed for trekking and I'd probably suggest you consider our VEO Active Series: www.vanguardworld.co.uk/search?type=production&q=active Ian at Vanguard

Do you have a video for the T 37M?
Apologies for the late reply, but not specifically. It's pretty much the same, but smaller.
