wtf... I'm not too far from Turlock. So to hear you mention it was a surprise.
Two burleys I like a lot are Mac Baren Symphony and Cobblestone Brick Burley Plug. Symphony is a wonderful basic burley. Nothing fancy. Brick Burley Plug is delicious.
Who knit your hat?
Happy new year to you and wishing you all the best in 2025 ! Good vibes all the way from France ! Cheers !
Good list I agree with 75% of it
It is not easy to pick favorites for me, hard to tell. Sure, everyone has preferences which will change over time... so, enjoy pipe smoking in general. For hopefully many years to come! Happy new year to each and everyone out there! God bless!
Thank you for this video and the links! You're an absolute lifesaver.
I have fallen in love with blue danube
Great list and I wish the best in 2025 😊
Savinelli 315ks with Country Squire Cowboy Coffee love the dark fired Kentucky in it!
Loved this one. You have some truly great blends listed here and i was happy to see Pegasus as your no.1 pick. I, too, started with latakia blends about 20 yrs ago and then moved into burley and eventually Vas. Just this year, after all t his time, i've found i love non-latakia oriental blends as well and the collection is growing again. Just what my tobacco acquisition disorder needed - to find an entire new genre of bliss. *eyeroll* However, i have to say, i always avoided Pegasus due to the cavendish and just discovered it this year as well. Since then i've smoked it every day...usually 2 -3 times (i'm a 10+ bowl a day kinda guy). So needless to say, i love it, too. Thanks for the entertaining recap. We seem to have similar tastes. Happy new year! :)
C&D burley all the way... other than that check out Pipe Force episode VI and V
I've tried the V and have some VI in my cellar.
Thanks for your top list of 2024! It was very good. Pegasus is my go to blend. I first tried it when it was thought Carter Hall would meet it's demise several yezrs ago. Not an aromatic fan, I will smoke it when I am going to be sround people. It is 8nteresting what different reviewers taste in the blend. One reviewer claims " cold coffee and prunes". I also enjoy OJK and haunted Bookshop, in that order. I also really like C&D's Poplar Camp. Sadly, two blends in my rotation are now the property of STG. Hopefully. they will survive the winnowing cuts. Happy puffing and may the new yezr bring great opportunities your way! Jeff
Oooh! This is the second time someone has recommended Poplar Camp. I need to make sure and add that to my next order. Thanks for sharing!
@amanrelaxes CanRod/Mike was where I heard about Poplar Camp. I love Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake. However it is like an Esoterica blend in that one has to wait for it to drop. I am not into "drop waiting". So I tried Poplar Camp. It is now near the top of my rotation. Happy puffing, Jeff
For your half point of your vid for me its sun bear black locust best so far happy new year as well
It was really close-almost went with Sun Bear. 🤓
Thanks very much. Love the year end comps.
You're most welcome.
Thank you for a great list Sir! Happy new year 🎉
And to you!
Thank you for the review list! Have a great new year!
You too!
Enjoying 4th Generation Evening Flake in a Nording Fantasy Freehand at the moment. Top 5 1. 4th Generation 1897 Erik Paul’s Blend (fresh raisin bread w/honey) 2. J.A. Dragon Flake Kohlhase and Kopp (burnt brown sugar/ Carmel) 3. Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bulls Eye Flake (savory) 4. Bob’s Chocolate Flake (cocoa and campfire) 5. Briarworks Sweet Tea
Thanks for sharing. The Bullseye Flake was on my list last year.
@ I need to look for that video. I picked up pipe smoking in October. So it is all kind of new. 😂
The best to you in 2025! Great list! I love burleys, but I’ve been making my way into the world of Virginias. Thank you for your content. Thank you for the giveaway that I won this year through you! 1st YTPC contest I ever won. Cheers brother!
Thanks, and happy new year! I hope you find as much joy in the world of Viginias as I have.
cornell og diehk autumn evening.....Savinelli New Dry System Rustic 613
Cheers!
Hi Robert. Nice video. Thanks for sharing! I know you have said many times that you're not a fan of aromatics, but you know what? Neither was I in my younger days. I started smoking cigars and pipes in my 20s, but now I'm 60, and I don't know if this is normal or not, but over the years I guess my taste buds have changed, and now, after 40 years of smoking, I had to switch to aromatics because I couldn't really taste anything else. Are there any other old timers out there that have experienced this shift? I'm honestly curious to know. Of course, you can't go wrong with Cornell & Dielh. Their Autumn Evening is one of my favorites. But that's still an aromatic, I think. Right? Cheers to you, my friend! I hope 2025 rewards you with joy and success in all you do. Mark
Autumn Evening is one of the aromatics that turned me off to aromatics. lol. I'm always willing to try stuff every once in a while. For whatever strange reason, I like Cult Blood Red Moon, but most aromatics just upset me because they don't taste like tobacco. We'll see if it changes.
@amanrelaxes Being a big JRR Tolkien fan, I began my pipe journey with Capstan Blue (because it was said to be Tolkien's favorite). But after 40 years I guess my taste buds changed.
Great list. Currently smoking LJ Peretti Cuban mixture in my savinelli la corta 616. Have a happy new year.
Thanks! I'll have to look into that blend you mentioned.
Loving the vid so far! Gotta get my hands on some of that Hamborger… heard good stuff and I’m a VA lover so it makes sense. Smoking Hal o the wynd currently in my Savinelli 644 Erica Fiamma. Hope you and yours had wonderful Christmas and have a happy new year!
Thanks! I've got Hal o the wynd on my list of blends to try.
Hola, Man. Este año me han sorprendido Red Rappare y Artisans Blends. Añado las tuyas a futuras compras. Gracias por compartir y salud para 2025. Un abrazo.
Hola! Me alegra que te gusten Red Rappare y Artisans Blends. Espero que mis recomendaciones también te sorprendan. ¡Salud para un 2025 lleno de buenos sabores!
I approve this list!
💪
Enjoying an easy burning 1820 Flake lightly rubbed out in a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Strand P-Lip. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼
Sounds great!
Ok sir, I live in a small town outside Turlock. We are not a cow town we are a cattle town😂. Great list! Been a Gold over Blue fan since day one, sorry Tolkien. I blew thru my tin of Pegasus in about a week. 2025 is your year brother. Happy new year
lol. What town? I wonder if we've both smoked at that lounge. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it right now, but I do have a special place in my heart for Cigar Monkey in Merced. Thanks, and happy new year to you as well!
Great list. Love all the burley blends on the list. I'm a big burley lover. The one I missed out on was 8th State Burley. Maybe next year. Pegasus has become one of my favorites this year too. I love C&D's burley forward blends. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad you enjoyed the list! Burley blends really do have a special charm, and 8th State Burley is definitely worth trying. Keep exploring those fantastic flavors!
Dracula, 107 rusticated. Enjoying pirate cake.
Very nice! I have a Dracula 268, and it's probably my favorite pipe. It fits my metalhead/goth aesthetic, and it's the perfect size/shape! I also have a Rocky Donegal 106, and it's a real champ for English blends (though the bowl is HUGE).
That was on my top 10 last year-beautiful blend.
Hi Robert. It's really a joy to smoke with you. I'm relaxing with a bowl of cherry almond from the Tinder Box while enjoying your laid back video. I must admit, time flies during these mellow smoke sessions. I always watch till the end, yet I lose track of time and forty minutes feels like only ten. You know, I'm fairly envious, because after 41 years of working outside my home, I would absolutely love to get a stay-at-home job, but I haven't a clue as to how to get one. Congratulations on being able to work-from-home! That's simply wonderful. It's almost 2pm here, on a Sunday afternoon in December, 2024. There was a slight drizzle falling earlier, but the rain has stopped for now. This is good relaxing weather. I can certainly relate to the bear-life, and oftentimes wish I could just hibernate all winter long. Know what I mean? As far as a year of relaxing... That would be nice. But I can't afford that, unfortunately. Currently, I relax alone with my pipe... and sometimes a cocktail. When I feel like relaxing with friends, I go to the cigar lounge (a real one, not my UA-cam channel). Me and my best friend do have a routine (most old men do, I think). We usually meet for breakfast at the local diner on Saturday mornings. After breakfast, we go on a hike up this really steep road in town. It leads to a park on the bluffs, about 200 feet over the Mississippi River. Once there, we relax, smoke a cigar, and vent about our jobs. Haha. If I was financially independent and didn't need a job, I would absolutely relocate to one of the Rocky Mountain states and spend my days alipne hiking. That's my real passion. I love hiking in the high country. I do exercise, but only simple bodyweight exercises and stretches, no weights, machines, or gym memberships for me. I guess I'm doing alright. I'm 60. I'm just trying to make it to 62, then retire. But 2 years feels like an eternity. Take care, my friend. Thank you for this channel. Mark
Thank you for such a kind and thoughtful comment. It’s always great to hear from you, and I love the image of your hikes to the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi. That sounds like the perfect way to recharge and connect with a good friend. I really appreciate your support and the time you take to watch my videos. It means a lot. I noticed you mentioned my work-from-home job-so I’m guessing you might have missed my more recent videos where I shared that I was actually laid off recently. It’s been a big change, but I’m using this time to focus more on the channel and other creative projects. Your love for alpine hiking definitely resonates with me. Living in the Rockies, I can say it’s a dream for anyone who loves the high country. I hope you can make that move someday-retirement and the mountains sound like they’d suit you perfectly. Thanks again for your continued support, Mark. Here’s to good smokes, meaningful routines, and making those two years to retirement fly by! Cheers, Robert
@amanrelaxes Hi Robert. Thanks for the nice reply. I did realize that this video is 3 years old, and I do remember that you said you were laid off in a recent video. However, I wasn't aware it was the same job. Yeah, I've a few videos on my channel that were filmed on my bluff hikes. Check them out if you're curious. I'm waiting for my morning mail right now. My new DrGrabow pipe should be here today according to the company email that was sent to me last week. I'm eager to try it out. Oh, by the way, I tend to make my comments a bit longer because I figure since you spend 40 minutes to an hour filming your videos (and probably more time editing them), they deserve a decent comment and not just the typical "Nice!" 😁
Smoking Kings Highway with my Kaywoodie estate pipe. Fave blends from this year: Haunted Bookshop Ruins of Windsor HH Old Dark Fired
Having some MacBaren Symphony that I pressed into a cake and let sit for a month in my Kaywoodie 12B Bulldog. Love Kaywoodie estates. Always a fun project before a great smoke.
I need to try that middle one.
Honey nut cereal 😂
Straight up!
Far & away hands down winner... J.M.Boswell's "Northwoods"
I love me some Northwoods
Something similar happened to me and my team of eight people. The superintendant called us in and bragged about the curriculum we had designed, awards we had won. Took us to the best restaurant and lunch was all the shrimp and wine we could eat or drink. Then fired us all.
That's nuts. I'm glad I'm not alone, but sorry that happened to you. What a twisted perspective someone like that has to have to sleep at night.
Do NOT try to rehydrate it. It will just get moldy. A great smoke, but go slow, since it will go like a puff if you don't.
Thanks for the tip.
What’s your favorite English blend? Smoking Orlik Golden Sliced out of a Peterson 108.
It's a bit of a tie between EMP, Nightcap, and Plum Pudding. It's hard! Depending on my mood, any one of them might hit the spot more. How bout you?
@ so far pirate cake. But I have a lot more blends to try.
@ have you ever had 10 Russians that’s on my list
My Dear Friend, You remind me of Late John Harden (Matches 860). May you never run out of your Tobacco, Pipes & Smokes. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
It's truly an honor to be compared to Matches. Thanks so much, and I hope you had an amazing Christmas!
I'm making a big swing back to burley again, and I'm hitting my stash of Pegasus. It's so good. I've also been smoking a bit of Five Brothers! I only smoke it in a tiny clay pipe because it's the strongest tobacco I've ever smoked. But it's just pure, unvarnished burley. Some of my top blends this year are C and D blends! The Carolina Red Flake was divine this year. I would also put Pegasus on my list. I'm going to venture back into the C and D burley flakes. They are wonderful. I've tried 1, 2, and 3. 1 has perique in it, 2 is just straight burley flavor, and 3 has dark fired in it. I really like 2 even though some people find it one dimensional. It's a pure burley flake and way different from HH Burley Flake. I think you'd like them too! I haven't tried 4 or 5 yet but maybe I will this year! Other tops on my list: Palmetto Balkan, Black Mallory/Red Rapparee (these are siblings in my book), Three Nuns, Brown Flake Aromatic, 1792 Flake, 1820 Mixture, and and HU Diplomat are probably some good other choices.
Oooh, I might need to try every blend you just mentioned! I also have a clay pipe (I think you'll see it in a video now that you're a member-thanks, btw). I have 3 tins of the Carolina Red Flake but haven't tried a single one yet. Definitely when the weather warms I'll be popping one open.
Five Brothers!
Interesting! I haven't tried any of the flavored offshoots of PP. I do like the special reserve flake a lot! To me, flavoring should enhance or play with tobacco rather than subsume it. That's why 1792 Flake works for example. It has tonquin bean on it, but it's paired with a very burly dark fired base. The tonquin beans somehow makes it both mellow and strong at the same time. It's totally unique. Sam's Flake is the same way :It's got a good Virginia and Oriental base but just enough tonquin to add to it instead of overwhelm. I liked the tonquin Bean element so much that I bought some tonquin beans and have made cakes with them! They're technically illegal in the US for spurious reasons, but Amazon sells them hahaha. Sam Gawith Chocolate Flake falls in the same camp. It's got just a touch of chocolate to add to the virginia, burley, and latakia base. They're worth a try in my opinion!
I THINK I have some 1792 in my cellar. I haven't tried it just yet, but now I'm very intrigued!
I’m like you aromatics typically not my thing. I better try some of these while I can lol. What pipe were you smoking out of today?
That's my Peterson B11 Fishtail Arran Smooth-first pipe I ever bought about 1 years ago!
Just opened mine this weekend and I feel like it wasn't sealed properly. Didn't get the apple Brandy but still a good blend. Still prefer the Bourbon version.
That's too bad. The bourbon is a solid one as well. Haven't had it in a while.
Legend has it he’s still lighting his pipe
You speak the truth
That's a crumble cake in anybody's book. I've never liked companies that try to redefine words in order to seem more hip!🙄🙄
Yeah, for sure!
Merry Christmas!
Same to you! Thanks for the super chat. Nice little post-Christmas gift. :)
Thanks!
Thank YOU!! I hope you had a great Christmas.
2 reason I would consider moving to the US. Firearms and tobacco.
I hope the latter doesn't get hit too hard by the Sutliff situation.
