    This is a great video. However, I would suggest that new graduates who are going for competitive SWE roles also do the Leetcode Hard problems. Though these are less commonly asked, they definitely build that next-level problem-solving ability.

    Hi - just came across your channel. This video and others you made are great and quite valuable. Thanks a lot! Keep it up and hope to see you become one of the top channels soon. I also had two questions from this video if you don't mind... 1) is there any way for me to take a General Coding Assessment and actually send that somehow TO companies or is the only way to take these assessments if a company sends them to ME? 2) I recently took a CodeSignal assessment for InstaCart. It seemed to be company-specific and it wasn't the standard 4 questions, but more so like the type where there is an existing codebase and you build on top of that by implementing certain parts of it. I got a score of 400/600. Would you say that's good/ok/bad?

      Yes and no! My thinking on this just boils down to I believe we're all credible to speak on our own experiences . My goal on this channel is to help others by early-career folks getting into software engineering by sharing what's worked for me. I do this because it's what I wish I had when I was first starting out. On your point though, I say yes because if someone is trying to replicate my results (mostly CS students) then it'll hopefully be valuable to them. I also say no though, because I in no way think I'm qualified to give advice to every person out there. For example, if someone is trying to land their next senior or staff engineering gig, I don't have much to say to them since, like you mentioned, most of my experience has been internships while in school up until now. I think we can all only speak to our own experiences and what's worked for us. I also think this holds regardless of how successful one is :) Thanks for checking out the video regardless!

    What you were saying about scores might have been true a while ago, but right now unless you get perfect score they wont invite you to the next round. I got 750, 820, 770 last year and did not get invited to the next round. And those weren’t auto OAs, for one of them recruiter reached out to me before I even applied. Same for my friends who even got 830+

I see you have been sharing a lot of job post for new grads, are those for students who will graduate in Fall too or just the one who graduate in Springs. If possible, can you please mention about the intakes too. This will really help a lot.

    Hey Mark, great vid again! As a sophomore, I would request that you make a video on a guide through understanding DSA as it is kind of complimentary to these coding assesments/interviews. Also a side question I had was regarding the template of the resume you showed on your previous video, as I really liked the layout and was wondering if it was on overleaf or some other resource. What's your favorite online assessment platform?

  • @justinhenry5772
    @justinhenry5772 11 місяців тому

    I do believe this is overall a good video. However, I don’t understand the strict commitment to a short time limit for practicing problems. A lot of the best don’t do that. Being stuck and thinking through it strengthens your problem-solving skills. Similar to the gym, if you’re not being challenged you’re not growing. It seems to me the real thing to aim for when solving a problem is serious and conscious effort. Solving a problem involves checking through multiple avenues and can justifiably take more than 10 minutes. On the other hand, the real vice to avoid is self-deception. For a lot of people, they (unintentionally) don’t put in much effort into doing a problem because they know they’re going to look at the solution at a specific time.

    • @markbenliyan
      @markbenliyan 11 місяців тому

      Hey Justin! Thanks for the comment and taking your time to watch the video :) I can totally get where you're coming from. For me personally, the shorter time limit for each problem was an optimization that ensured I keep going instead of getting too burnt out by a couple problems. When I'd look at the solutions, I'd still take time to thoroughly understand the solution (usually by walking through iterations on paper). That did enough for me to actually learn even if I didn't crack the solution myself on the first go. Over a longer time horizon, this helped me get a ton more problems under my belt that I actually understood and translated well to interview performance. To be totally fair though, this is just what's worked for me. Can't guarantee it'll be right for everyone, but it's what I'd do the next time I'm interview prepping!

    Great callouts, especially for newer folks. You can cut up the first couple of bullets for your "intro to typography" channel, lol. Remember that the second person who reads a resume is usually the Hiring Manager, after your resume has passed the recruiter screen. They are typically going to read just the first couple of most recent bullets, so invest heavily in those, taking your advice on business value. Don't give in to a simple chronological ordering here---put the highest impact things first. Education and skills should only be at the top for junior folks. People reading experienced candidates' resumes go straight to experience. Nobody cares that I graduated from college w/ a CS degree over 20 years ago :) PS This is an interesting new, "Light Mode" version of your videos :)

    • @markbenliyan
      @markbenliyan Рік тому

      Great call outs for things like educations & skills being at the top for junior folks. A big asterisk to these videos is that they're targeting students / junior folks as those are the only ones I can speak to from my personal experience. So cool that you noticed the "light mode"! Do you prefer it over Dark?

    • @thebehavioral
      @thebehavioral Рік тому

      @@markbenliyan Target audience: yes makes sense. Keep making content for those folks 🌱🔜🌳. Honestly I prefer the dark mode, although the light mode is also high quality. I think the contrast between you and the background in dark mode makes you stand out more and the lighting is more dramatic on your face. I'm no cinematographer though, I'm struggling with lighting on my own channel... 🔦

      I've been using a software called Overleaf for building my resumes.
