      Me too. I was 8 years old and in bed when I heard this beautiful voice for the first time singing this song. I got up and snuck out into the hallway and sat on the floor mesmerized as he was on the Ed Sullivan show along with Richard Burton and Julie Andrews. I fell in love with his voice at that moment and still love it to this day. I bought my first LP at ten and it was one of his. I still have it and it still plays beautifully though I have since bought a CD so I can keep the record in great shape.

    Robert Goulet was tremendously versatile. I recently saw him in an old episode of “In The Heat of the Night”. He played a country music star and pulled off that genre exceptionally well, both vocally and physically. These photos do not illustrate the respect he deserved in death. Rich Little looks like he’s ready to start imitating him!

      @@kennethwayne6857 Exactly. Bob Goulet had a one of a kind voice. Born in Massachusetts, spent his formative years north of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and spent his early training and professional career in Toronto, Ontario, until, at the age of 27, hitting it big on win "Camelot". He was a nice guy, but, like most of us, very faulted in character and troubled as an individual, but found a little bit of solace in his last twenty years or so. But, what a voice?! Sinatra said, " As voice as broad as a barn door." So true. But, I knew Frank, so that could have possibly been an insult.(lol!)(I knew Frank from his son, Frank Jr.) Arguably, the best baritone ever. My favo(u)rite, at least, even over Howard Keel, Gordon MacRae, or Harve Presnell.

    • @kennethwayne6857
      @kennethwayne6857 3 роки тому

      @@jonathansmith9235 While I love and treasure Mr. Goulet, I would not place him over the other three you mentioned. Huge fan of classical singing that I am (I am one myself), Bob Goulet would not have been at home in this genre to the degree that the others were. Although I learned recently that he sang Handel's Messiah early in his career, I cannot picture him singing anything of the sort. Had the voice of course, but not the musical discipline. That said, I cherish the one time I saw him onstage, as Arthur in 'Camelot' in 1993. I didn't get to meet him afterwards alas, as it was a matinee. By the way, though I am a proud American, I also spell it 'favourite'.

    • @jonathansmith9235

      @@kennethwayne6857 By your correct spelling, you must have Canadian roots.(lol!) I may be repeating myself, as I am 66 and that just goes with the territory, but Bob was born in Massachusetts, but spent his teenage years north of Edmonton, Alberta, and then did his training and had his early professional career in Toronto, Ontario, before Broadway and Camelot in 1960. I got to meet him at the "O'Keefe Centre" in Toronto in the '70's when I was playing piano in the lounge at O'Keefe. And he did a set of numbers with me which was so much fun. Now, I have to disagree with you on a couple of things. Goulet had extensive training and discipline, much more than Keel, MacRae, and Presnell put together. He just knew exactly how to use it and apply it. His resonance was unlike any other baritone I've heard, as was his phrasing, possibly due to being in Canada for a while.(lol!) Don't get me wrong. MacRae was great, as was Howard Keel, who I also got to meet at O'Keefe Centre when he was appearing with Jane Powell.(Wow.) Presnell was magnificent, but limited, and his career did not extend to the length of Bob's. I, myself, is/am/are a pianist and singer, and a dinosaur, being a baritone, relaxed sounding like Bing or Dean Martin, but doing a showtune, totally like Bob Goulet. My father, as a purchasing agent, even dealt with Bob's cousin, which was kind of neat. But, isn't it interesting that all the baritones were so good looking? I'm not sure what exactly happened to me.(lol!) Where are you from? I'm in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

      @@jonathansmith9235 Jonathan, thank you for your letter and all that stimulating information which I love reading about. I am a native and lifelong resident of Brooklyn, New York. It's quite possible I'm wrong about Mr. Goulet but I know so much more about Keel, Presnell and MacRae than I do of him. As an opera student and (still) struggling singer at a youngish 55, they have been my lifelong heroes. Besides Bob, the only one I've heard in person was Harve Presnell, which was as Frank in 'Annie Get Your Gun'. Though I was twelve, he made a hell of an impression on me and a mere nine years later I found myself doing the role for the first time. I know Keel and Jane Powell played many roles onstage together, very curious to know what you saw them in at O'Keefe or was it a concert? Also what was your impression of him personally? I find his book makes for fascinating reading. Sorry to say I was a bit turned off Mr. Goulet many years ago when I heard his recording of 'Carousel'. It just seemed to me at the time that he was musically and rhythmically all over the place as if he were in a lounge somewhere instead of playing the character. I can't see how Rodgers would have approved of that, but as I said that was long ago and I'd like to listen again to re-assess. Perhaps I was being a bit harsh. If you are an opera fan or maybe even if you're not, you'd know of my former beloved voice teacher, Montreal-born Louis Quilico. I believe there's a street named after him there. He passed away 21 years ago and boy, do I miss him. Also regret that I have not yet visited Canada but hope to someday. Sorry I rambled on for so long. Best wishes!
