Tahr '24: Part 1

We had an 11 day break to get into some Tahr Hunting. So headed to the familiar Eastern South Island. This was a trip of highs and lows, in a number of ways. This video is part 1 of that trip, where Coralie comes along with me and enjoys the majestic southern scenery.
Roar 24

Roar 24, Lots of stags but nothing big or old, so I had to settle for a meat animal instead. Deer density was very high in the area and I think this is affecting the quality of the heads.

This is an iconic East Coast tramp. Sunrise on Hikurangi
Moanui - Kahunui-Makakoere-Tawa, Tramp and fish.
Переглядів 1,8 тис.Рік тому
This tramp was inspired by the desire to go off track over the hill between the Kahunui hut and the Makakoere hut. There is an old forest service trail between the two on old maps. We found the trail and the route was steep, but the bush was fairly chewed out by deer so easy going for a bush bash. I enjoyed the fishing too! But the highlight was camping on a picturesque river bench in the lower...

This Tramp and fishing trip into the central North Island was made possible by a number of people. The flight in with expert pilot Andrew and the pick up from trusty Dad. Thanks guys.

An adventure of a different kind today. We had a good weather window so went out for a morning's fishing with Brett who was home for the weekend.

Kuripapango fishing trip. Oct '22

This is one of the early trips we recorded on video. We tramped into Kiwi Mouth hut, then over to Cameron hut, then down the river back to the Kuri carpark. The river was only just navigable at a level of 880mm.

This was our first multi day ride. Thanks for the tuition and patience from Craig and Toni. A lot of fun and quite tough at times.
St James walkway May '23

We chose to walk the St James as it fitted the bill as we wanted a relatively easy tramp (post covid) and we had to do it in 4 days as we had a ferry to catch. We also hadn't done it before. It was a really beautiful walk that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Rabbit pass, Wilkin - Matukituki. April '23
We probably passed you, we ( me and my three sons )had been up the river for 3 nights, saw not a soul and came out to the traffic jamb on the track down to the river! great spot .
The tops are really beautiful.
Can you list the tracks and huts you stayed at? I am coming over in March but will be on the south island most of the time but my cousin lives in Rotorua so maybe the next time I come I do the north island.
Nice country alright, well done. I have the same pack - love the weight of it but sometimes a challenge to fit all my gear in for a week or more @ 70L.
I’m looking to do this route this summer and so this video was a find!!!! Thanks so much for sharing!
Nice rifle I did wonder where your rifle was. What is it? What caliber and model if you don't mind. Another awesome video. Cheers
It's a Bergara break down single shot 308 16.5in barrel. Short range bush rifle really.
I love your great adventures into the real backcountry
These patches of backcountry that might not be spectacular, still have a beauty and delight of their own. And hardly anyone ever goes there!
shame i was hopeing to see me talking to yaz outside te puia never mind
Haha, sorry mate didn't catch that on video.!
How cool is that cable car!
Amazing aye
What a great effort to climb Hikurangi in the dark! Actually, to even climb it......! Pete
Great vid. Think we crossed paths when you were walking in. Was with a friend of mine walking back out and you asked us if your boots were going to get wet (ours were!).
Yep, I remember ya!
Cool vid mate. Nice normal people doing extraordinary things.
My auntie and uncle are very cool
what ws the hut where you spent the night and shot the other Tahr
Stone hut. Cheers.
You earned that bull, well done.
Awesome Bull! Great huts too.
We ran into you as we were leaving down bush stream, glad you kept your feet dry and got a nice bull 👌
Thanks guys, I think I'll take Coralie up there sometime, it's so beautiful.
That's cool country, great content
Nice bull mate
Thanks 👍
Great vid, awesome country and well done. It's a big job and you scored
Thanks 👍
Wow epic scenes
Hi Stu. Have been enjoying watching your videos. Have you done much exploring on the other side of the gorge around the Manganuku hut and Tokenui Hut area?
Thanks for the comment. We've done a few tramos in the Eastern side of the Gorge over the years, still have a few spots we haven't been to yet too, like Savlon hut. Maybe next summer! I'll post a video if we do. Cheers
Loving your videos Stu….
Thanks Graham, it adds a different dimension to the trip. Started out just putting some clips together for Dad and Mum to watch... but seems a few more people like it. Cheers
Great video, surprised you didn't see more hunters. I was up the urchin that weekend. Met Alot of hunters on their way to the thunderbolt
We saw 2 lots of 2 people from a distance only. Could have been more that we just didn't see.
Looks amazing
great video i know that place well ive worked on the farm that u walk through awesome place great hunting looks like it hasnt change to much in there been a long time since ive been in but well done to you both :)
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. 👍32
Incredible footage!
next time' hell of a lot of deer ,private property?
Mostly private. Some of bush hunting was public.
Awesome spot, way too many deer there by the look but great for the roaring action
Fantastic view at sunrise. Thank you for sharing.
Nice video. Thank you for sharing. subd & 👍10
Not quite what I had in mind with the kettlebells, but that works!
O for awesome great to see your walk
Nice vid Stu and Coralie. Been a few years since I climbed the burn. We used to park a car at the Moanui then travel back and wander up the Wairata towards Nikau and Koranga forks huts. Nice country.
I didn't find the Rock of Ages Biv either. It seems to be a lot more west (300 m west of a line down from the stream flowing from the north, you see in your video). So you probably have to cross the Kitchener River before your campsite (to avoid the bush right up against the river) and cross it again at some point 600 m West, then it is 60m into the bush.
Great video - and a special trip 30 years later. Hope you're both well! Still have fond memories of joining you on your tahr hunt in the two thumb range a few years back.
Thanks Simeon. I think your video of that trip was a part of the inspiration!
Beautiful valley!!
Well done, excellent vid, thank you for sharing the excitement and beauty of your trip!
Tganks for sharing this i might try walking up to Cameron hut inbthe coming weeks.
I liked the double hookups! From Tobias
I liked the barracuda! From Moses

Watching from Montana in the US! What amazing terrain. I need to get back to NZ!
