Sunday
Jimmy McGovern's gritty drama-documentary tells the story of the events of Bloody Sunday when British paratroopers shot dead 13 unarmed civilians and wounded a further 15 during an anti-Internment march in Derry, Ireland. A dramatized reconstruction of the events between 1968 and 1973, 'Sunday' is based entirely on fact, using British Government documents, interviews, eyewitness reports and court transcripts. This gripping film examines the personal tragedies, the political context and the impact of the Widgery Inquiry that followed (Description from the DVD cover).
This is the rarer of the two films made depicting the events of Bloody Sunday and for my money the better of the two.
Bloody Sunday (The second in Irish History) was the massacre on the 30th of January 1972 of innocent civilians by the soldiers from the 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment British Army.
On the 30th of January 1970 a Civil Rights demonstration by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association was taking place in Derry. The march was attacked by British troops killing 13 on the day another died later from his wounds. 14 others were injured. Several of those shot were trying to help other victims or were shot in the back while fleeing.
The British authorities then did everything in their power to cover up the crimes of their soldiers. Blaming the I.R.A. or rioters for starting the shooting. They planted nail bombs on innocent victims, tampered with evidence, intimidated eyewitness and held a whitewash of an inquiry in the form of Widgery Tribunal. While all the time protecting the guilty.
This was far from the only such incident of it's kind committed by the British Army during the Troubles. Other similar crimes were the Springhill Massacre, and the Ballymurphy Massacre and then there were crimes where they colluded with Loyalist groups to commit acts like the Dublin & Monaghan Bombing and the Miami Showband massacre.

This is a video about the Mauser Model 1871/The Gewehr 71 which became known in Ireland as the Howth Mauser. Approximately 1,400 of these single shot rifles were landed along with 29,000 rounds of ammunition by the Irish Volunteers in July 1914. This was an old outdated rifle, being only single shot, but it was accurate and powerful with an 9.5mm x 60mm cartridge. The Howth Mauser was used exte...

The result of this short conversation, and the general theme of the program being centered around insurgency as a means to achieve freedom, led to the BBC (The British Broadcasting Corporation- Britain's national broadcaster) and Sky TV (a Satellite Broadcaster) putting a ban on showing the episode. When Sky did show the episode they ...

I read on a university site something fascinating. It was called one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. It asked the reader to determine if the act was terrorism or not. Great examples. I can think a few that would apear in opisite paper. Like this one The people of this land dont care for our leaders liberate them. We help build thier houses, and ships, and help protect them ang tend to thier crops. We ask for compensation. They refuse. At first they would insult our soldiers, then they would throw rocks at them, poar tar, n father on them, winter time was worse. They would hide tocks in snow, and pelt us. So barbaric. They desteoyed our loyal helpers lands, n farms, n houses, they would steal from us, kill those who were loyal to us and go abord our ships. They stole what our ships had, n 2 other ships that werent ours. Now they claim we start a war, when we just defend our subjects. Of course this is the point of view of a British regular durring our revolution. We were terrorists to them. All the things written we did back then. So yes in the end the people decides.

It reminds me of the struggle of EOKA here in Cyprus. The English left us no other way than an armed struggle against their colonial army, for the unification with mother Hellas. They lied to us, broke their promises and utterly ignored the referendum where 95,71% voted for union with Greece. Armed conflict was the only way.

I love Data's question here, but I've always been bothered by how Picard evades. I do get that it's an uncomfortable subject, *_and_* I get that they're trying to illustrate that Picard doesn't have all the answers. But I still always wished Picard focused more on "Data, this is a complex topic with no easy answer" (etc) rather than quickly pivoting and patting Data on the back for becoming more human.

i see a lot of people loosely throwing around the word "terrorism" here. even the series itself (if not necessarily this episode) is frequently guilty of misusing this word. additionally, a lot of people, including the episode's author, keep bringing up the american revolution as though it were an example of terrorism. but the american revolution did not actually involve any terrorism. there's an important distinction between "terrorism" and most other forms of armed rebellion, and while its certainly possible for a rebellion to involve terrorism, it doesnt automatically imply it. terrorism is where people indiscriminately attack innocent civilians and bystanders in order to intimidate or "terrorize" a population. an armed uprising or rebellion such as that which occurred in the american revolution is different in that the violence was specifically aimed at the government they were revolting against and armed forces or other government officials that were sent by that government. to my knowlege, no one on the american side of that conflict snuck over to england to kill innocent citizens in order to intimidate the crown.

The tragic events of the years of The Troubles, especially that of Bloody Sunday, break and sicken my heart. Violence solves nothing, and leaves only death, tears and anger in its wake. RIP to all the innocent dead. I hope with all my heart that it never happens again.

If only the 9/11 planes were travelling faster they might have killed more people or the lorries in Germany had bombs inside so they could explode and get even more people in the Christmas marketplaces. Same for the Manchester attacks, they could have secretly wedged the doors closed so no one could escape. In fact if your daughter is on a hiking trip with her best mate from university wouldn’t it be great to see some videos of her quiet and scared like she can’t believe this is happening and confused wondering why her. Then after the prayers to Allah .... seeing them happy with themselves that another enemy of god has fallen.. I take it at least some of you are offended by what I just said? But to those saying one mans terrorist is another’s freedom fighter is disgusting, and idiotic. Government may call actual freedom movements terrorist and vis versa but that doesn’t make it so. And it’s very clear what Terrorism is and what Freedom fighting is. The lines may blur and the subject is bigger than a comment on UA-cam but it’s a very clear definition. The president of Uganda Yoweri Museveni summed it up nicely in his speech to the UN general assembly.. And I think we can ALL agree that there’s a massive difference between a man planting a bomb outside a army camp or overpowering the military who are conducting martial law of your county and forcing the government to step down and a man planting a bomb inside a concert full of music lovers or driving a vehicle into pedestrians on a busy London street or cutting the head off a young university girl who’s only crime is not keeping her bedroom tidy... I case anyone is really stupid my first part of this comment was sarcasm and I was trying to make put out that all those horrible things were ok because they were done by poor courageous freedom fighters not terrorist, And if you can’t see the clear difference then...
