How do you keep the tip so clean?
Tin the tip with some solder and also use a brass wool cleaner before putting the iron down. I usually tin and clean before/after my session and then just brass wool as needed during, occasionally you will see it could use some extra tinning before going in the wool.

You dont need flux just remove the coating from the connector first ive been solding since the 1980 never used flux once just make sure its clean and mot coated
