Putting a Tesla Battery In My VW Bus
After I opened up the Tesla Model 3 battery pack, I decided to change my plan and to shorten the entire pack! This meant removing EVERYTHING from the battery pack and then cutting it shorter. By the end of this video, I get the complete battery pack installed into the 1985 Volkswagen Doka (the double cabin truck version of a VW Vanagon).

In this video, my dream truck, a 1985 4WD VW Vanagon Truck, gets a new interior. Brand new seats and door cards all for under $70! Not too shabby. Some CNC work and welding work done. More CNC work needed in the future! Gotta make the truck pretty before we start and the mechanical side of this restoration!

Great progress and entertainment!
Thank you!!
Is there a good source to find and compare the dimensions of various OE batteries? I have a Vanagon Syncro that I'd love to convert to 4xE with IC RWD and electric FWD. The best area for batteries, weight distribution-wise, would be the central space the prop shaft currently occupies. That would call for long, skinny batteries.
The open inverter forum is a good source. Also DIYelectriccar
Three wheels or two...you can still go down easily.
Brilliant!
awesome)
I want to do this so bad
Nice to see some love for that CFD a/c mod. Stoked to follow your project!
Cool man! Maybe you can describe what your detailed plan is… what the Tesla assembly is.. voltages.. how you plan to reassemble it. What new voltage or bms or new protection you will use. Cheers
@@swss12 will do! Next video I’ll reassemble it and talk specs

Horse power difference before and after please .
My dream is to convert the front of my Vanagon Syncro to electric power, retaining the 1.9 TDI engine driving the rear wheels. It already has a potentiometer accelerator pedal for the TDI. I want to find a way to make a long, slender battery box to fit underneath where the propshaft and skid bars are. Shorter range would be fine with the option of the diesel always there.
awesome)
want info on the kit- I have the small frame ready to convert. No luck with contacting you through insta.

Why didn't you backup so we could have seen the whole thing in the camera view. 🤷♂️👍✌️

Hi, found a Vespa 50 while going through a deceased relative's assets. Guessing it's from the mid 60's, will check more carefully when I find the serial number. The engine was dismantled and is in a box, otherwise all parts seem to be in place (I think) Happened to see your video about electrification of smallframe vespa. Thanks for a very good and informative video that was also fun to watch. Immediately saw the possibilities of bringing this old Vespa to life. Would be interested to see more how you went about it, what parts you used, tips and tricks, etc. Good work! Greetings Per Lundberg
Amazing! Good luck to you. I’ll make a video in the near future with a step by step guide on converting one your self
Are you sure this was a 2wd originally? The reason I ask is the part you pointed out as welded on trans mount is actually the prop shaft protector mount. That is a factory welded part. The trans mounts are bolt on. Three threaded inserts on either side for the six 13mm bolts tat mount the forward end of trans. The threaded holes between the welded mount is for 2wd trans mount. Syncros have both 2 and 4wd threads for the forward trans mounts in that frame rail. This looks like a factory syncro to me.
I think someone chopped up a syncro tin top and welded the parts onto this doka
You’ve got my full support. These days it’s not about the power plant it’s just about getting these classic cars back on the road. And honestly you might be right it realistically could be cheaper than doing an engine swap from another car manufacturer. Despite it all ima be watching every step of the way, I can’t wait to see what comes of this project<3
Thank you! I have a feeling this will be the future "LS" swap for classic cars.
The answer was ls swap.
@@kdubw900l check out Vivid Vans. They are doing an LS Vanagon swap! Haha
Modern day hotrod. My dad and brother are doing similar with a fj40 Landcruiser and an Aussie Chrysler royal from 1963
Nice! How are you connecting the tesla motor to the drive shafts in the landcruiser?
Would love to see your process for modeling the engine mounts. Will you use someone like send-cut-send to make the parts?
Yes, exactly. That will be my next video. I am just about to finish the motor install this week
Stoked! Love it!
Can you sell me the old transmission?
Already sold! Thanks for the interest
@@bernietime darn. Saw that but wanted to give you the traction ;) What was the going rate for it?
@@synocate5602 $1500! That’s what I bought it for. But it was a 2WD transmission, not a 4WD syncro one
Cool project, looking forward to the videos.
You and me both!
Awesome project
Thank you! Cheers!
Well done!
Thanks! I definitely would not have been able to start this project without your videos! Your first build helped me decide to go the EV controls route instead of the open inverter board
Is Elon okay with this
How do you take a 40 year old VW and make it reliable? Rebuild it... not ruin it.
mmm I used to daily drive a freshly rebuild 2.1L powered Vanagon... still slow
looks like a cool project, looking forward to leaning more about how to do these swaps.
anything specific you want me to address in a future video?
Amazing.
Great project! Good luck!
Cool car and cool project! Good job!
My name is Rohit Parshuram Prajapati, I am a mechanic of two wheeler bike and three wheeler auto, be it electric or petrol engine work or diesel engine work, I do both the jobs well because I am proud of my work. I have 12 to 15 years of experience. Be it any company's bike or any company's three wheeler rickshaw, I do all the work well, whether it is the electrics inside the vehicle, I repair that too myself or whether it is a small house generator, diesel or petrol, I repair that too. I am saying this with confidence because I have had many years of experience and I have worked in seven to eight countries. Now I want to go to Europe or there I know French language as well as English and our mother tongue, Hindi. I appeal to you to give me an opportunity once. Thank you.
I’m in the US. Good luck though you will do great things

I just bought another one to fix! Should I make a video about it?

Nice work! Can you give more Details to the components used?
Thanks! Would it be helpful if I made a whole video walking through the electric conversion process?
Absolutely! I'm aware of potential hub motors and controllers - but which voltage is best? And then if i have got the single pieces of motor, accu, and controller - all the steps to get the stuff finally working and communicating is missing for me at the moment (throttle, wiring etc)@@bernietime
