A great book, really enjoyed reading it. 🙏
I would add a couple of strategies here: 1. Know roughly how many pages you read per hour (may differ between fiction and non-fiction) and then from that extrapolate how long each book on your list will take you to read. This way you can schedule books effectively and keep your eye on the prize. If for example you have a long train journey you can see it as 50% of your goal book done, and that’s more motivating as a way to ignore distractions and focus on reading. I find this also pushes me to try and finish books in a day if I know that it will take me ~6 hours or less. 2. Utilise the pomodoro technique, at least for challenging non-fiction books. 3. Have a dedicated reading space. 4. Integrate reading into other goals like language learning.
Finding so many booktubers to subscribe to. All great work! I’ve been slowly going through the Luke McCain Mysteries books, and using Bookly to track how many pages I’ve read.
Boo Hoo Poor Nerd , new name! All good strategies.
Why thank you!
Happy to see you on the internet buddy!
This was a good analysis, I found it really valuable for some story ideas I'm developing.
Thanks! I appreciate you letting me know!
And... no mention of The Worst Witch books by Jill Murphy in your list at the start... shame.
I am adding it to the list! DANG! Thanks for the recommendation! I'm on it.
Great job! Succinct while covering a wide territory of books and structure. I haven't read all the books you reference. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is the one with which I'm most familiar. Of course, now I'm interested in Babel as a school that takes power from the students--the opposite of Hogwarts that encourages growth. I wonder how the schools you survey fit in with the local surroundings. That is, what is the relationship of the school to the world that surrounds them? How important is that in "the magic school" structure you outlined in this video? Thanks.
Babel is outstanding. I can't even tell you. Thanks for checking out the video!
Solid list. I’ve read a few of them and added a few to my library list. Love Beck Chambers and highly recommend her novella To Be Taught, If Fortunate. I’m part way through Nghi Vo’s Singing Hill Cycle novella series and am throughly enjoying it.
Nice list! Loved Murderbot, about halfway through the series now, and it’s very consistent.
😮 I I literally just subscribed and you don’t like the beach how insulting to me LOL😂.
Interesting take on the "school trope." I'd love to hear more when it fits the book you're reviewing. Thanks.
Fav shirt sir!!!
That's a good rule!
Thanks for your recommendation. I used a tightly controlled credit from Audible to purchase. The story, coupled with the excellent narrator really kept me engaged. I did not want to stop listening. There were some instances of me spending a couple extra minutes on that tortuous 'stair mill' machine at the gym, just to finish a scene i was pulled into! This is a story that I would not have listened to if you haven't mentioned it in your newsletter. I am too anxiously awaiting Vol 2 in the trilogy!
A GREAT read!
I loved this series. Thank you for the recommendation!!
Came here from the newsletter. This is a great review of what makes Senlin Ascends so good. I read the book a few years ago but for some reason never got around to reading the other books in the series. You've inSPIREd me (if you'll pardon the pun) to continue traveling upward with Senlin.
We'd watch you read and review the phone book (do they still exist?)! That said, thankfully this is not just the phone book! You make me want to read!
Nice start, Ryan. Moving the frame in and out is a bit rough--what is that technique called? And the story sounds great. Chris
It's punching in and out. Most of the videos I watch that do book reviews do that for emphasis. I think I went a little too wild on it. I'll get it down! Thanks for the comment Chris!
