Makita DUN500WZ battery hedge trimmer review
In this video I give my initial thoughts on the makita DUN500WZ hedge trimmer. The unboxing part of this video was filmed in February 2023, and the voiceover for the end of the video when hedge trimming was recorded in February 2024.

    Did you register for 3 years extended warranty? Love mine but its been back to Makita 7 times as after a year or so the blade lock kept slipping when used in a horizontal direction.... really annoying but to be fair to Makita they did sort it eventually but my god it took way too many returns. I put a grease nipple on mine for easy refills

    Great to hear its light weight. I got the Makita XGT powerhead with articulating hedge trimmer attachment. Maybe my strength isn't good but it's very heavy. Cuts really well otherwise. I get the same 2 second cut out of not holding safety in. 100% agree it's very annoying. I'm using a Velcro strap on safety button from time to time.

    Basically similar to what Stihl pioneered with their HLA 65, a decade or more ago. Wonder if it’ll last as long and be as reliable?

    • @ExcelsisGardens
      @ExcelsisGardens 9 місяців тому

      There’s similarities, I believe the stihl HLA has a strokes per minute blade speed of 3000, the makita can go to 4400, which for me makes a massive difference when clipping plants with smaller leaves (like Buxus) as it doesn’t tear as many leaves, which leaves a cleaner finish 🙂

      The xgt 40v Makita stuff the blade speed is 5000, it's a shame they don't do a 40v version start of this hedge trimmer... I actually contacted Makita directly to ask if they had any plans to make one and they said they don't... I'll probably end up getting it either way and just get a 18-volt battery

    How long does one of the 5amh batteries last? Great video might invest as it would be alot lighter than my long reach Stihl and i already have makita batteries

    • @ExcelsisGardens
      @ExcelsisGardens 9 місяців тому

      Super hard to put a time frame on it, as it depends on how trigger happy you are, how thick the hedge is etc.. but definitely doesn’t last as long as my bli200 husqvarna batteries on there hedge trimmers. But then cost is massively different, makita batteries about £75 each compared to £300 husqvarna (I don’t use stihl so couldn’t compare them). I’ll make a video of a hedge trim, let you know how long it takes and how much charge it uses 🙂

      Thanks mate, and waste can definitely be profitable, I charge per tonne bag when I do remove waste. The charge will cover waste disposal, fuel and money for my time. I just find most of the gardens I’m in don’t need waste removed, which is why I’ve gone with a slightly smaller van 🙂 I think if waste removal was a bigger part of what I did, I’d of gone for a slightly bigger van, or add a trailer to this one 🙂

    you're using 1000 grit (that Niwaki need, as carbon steel) on Okatsune, who's product whetstone is only 400 grit (as it's Izumo Yasugi steel) - so you're needlessly wearing away your pruners for no good reason...

    • @ExcelsisGardens
      @ExcelsisGardens 9 місяців тому

      Thanks for the comment, interestingly Okatsune don’t state on there website the exact steel, on Niwaki they do (hitachi carbon steel) and Niwaki recommend they are sharpened with the #1000 grit stone. I personally haven’t seen any excessive wear in my 4 years of owning them and sharpening them regularly, in fact they still look like they did the day I brought them, though I will look at the okatsune whetstone and give it a go 🙂

    • @magspies
      @magspies 9 місяців тому

      @@ExcelsisGardens Okatsune do have on the home page of their website that they use Izumo Yasugi steel. Niwaki now sell the Okatsune whetstone as its more suitable for the Okatsune pruners (they've started stocking as well). Great you haven't noticed any excessive wear yet, but if people want them long term, best to avoid too high a grit with them!

    • @chopperjohn9851
      @chopperjohn9851 4 місяці тому

      @@magspiesif the Niwasi is 1000 grit and the Okatsune is 400 grit then the Niwasi is over twice as fine.
