    While looking at the SDR graph I got an idea: What about using some flexible material like aluminum foil or thin copper wire and shape it while the SDR is running to get some real-time feedback on what shape gives the best signal? The SDR could be tuned to some range with a constant broadcast, like WX or broadcast radio to have a reference point. What do you think, waste of time or worth a try?

    • @electronics.unmessed
      @electronics.unmessed День тому

      Thank you for your comment! Yes, you could actually try that with flexible materials. However, a big hurdle is the fact that radio signals are quite volatile, which means you have to do appropriate statistics to measure the improvement in signal strength and SNR. A better option could be to do a computer simulation and optimization. A research field on its own ... Do you have a concrete idea for it?

    What's the gain (G) of the antenna? Can it be modified by changing e.g. diameter?

    • @electronics.unmessed
      @electronics.unmessed 12 днів тому

      Thank you for your comment! The gain is about 4 dBi, which is not much more than a simple dipole. However, the antenna is producing a significantly better reception signal mainly because it receives all polarizations. I've tested and explained this in previous videos. Might be interesting for you. Regarding the diameter: The antenna is resonant and quite frequency selective. If you change the diameter, you obviously change the resonant frequency. You can increase its gain using a reflector, see recent videos about radio astronomy.

      OK, for 1kW and 5m the power flow is even lower than in the HAM radio example in the video. It is 3 orders of magnitude lower than the limit. So you are on the save side by far. Even when we consider that there is an additional near field at a distance smaller than 1 wavelength.

    We are using an ESP32-WROOM-32 V2 Dev Kit. Tests were showing that some ESP32 boards seem to have problems with the watch dog timer in the code! In that case you can enter your credentials in the WiFi manager, but the web server is not coming up! In that case you use a second version 5.2.2 without WDT. This one should work with all boards!

      Great that you want to use it! I assume, you tried the new version 5.2 with the WiFi Manager. Can you be a bit more specific? Can you connect to the WiFi Manager? If you managed your ssid and pass, your router is assigning an IP-address which you can see on the serial monitor of your Arduino IDE or you can find it in your router. Copy that IP-address to you router and then it should work.

    Hi Klaus, isn't there a problem with the model were the loop is positioned into the walled dish on the wiregrid model ? It seems to me that the plan of the loop should be perpendicular to the surface of the dish for the radiation pattern to be in the right direction. Am I missing something ? Thanks for your videos, they are really interesting. 73 de F8COD Tom.

    • @electronics.unmessed
      @electronics.unmessed 2 місяці тому

      Hi Tom, Thank you for your comment and I'm glad you're interested on the topic. That's actually a very good question. The lambda loop antenna radiates mainly perpendicular to the plane of the loop. The radiation pattern is a bit more complicated than you would think, because all polarizations are generated, and the antenna resonates in two modes that are perpendicular to each other. This is very different from a magnetic antenna, which is much smaller than the wavelength. That's a pretty complicated answer to a simple question. I've published several videos on this channel explaining this in detail. The current distribution, the equivalent circuit, the working principle, the radiation characteristics, etc. is analyzed. Hope the earlier videos are informative for you. In any case, don't hesitate to ask further questions. BR Klaus

    Mixing English text with non-English numbers can be confusing. In English, "." is the decimal point and "," is the thousands separator. When reading "3,7 V battery, 2.000 mAh", it's clear that "," is the decimal point (even though the remainder of the text is in English) because there's only 1 digit after it, so, therefore, "." must be the thousands separator. But, if it says only "2.000 mAh", that will be read as "2 mAh" with 3 decimal places. Personally, I'd follow what some programming languages do and use "_" as the thousands separator, i.e. "2_000 mAh". Also, "3.3" is pronounced "three point three". On another point, if you find that the ADC input is too "noisy", try adding a decoupliing capacitor between it and GND and averaging multiple readings. That worked for me! Alternatively, try a MCP3008 ADC chip.

    • @electronics.unmessed
      @electronics.unmessed 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for your comment! Yes, I agree with you. The representation of numbers is always a challenge when it is not consistent. I have actually thought about it a few times. I just checked: there are about the same number of comma regions and dot regions. Then there is the Momayyez region, which makes up maybe 20 percent. Also interesting: In Canada, it doesn't even seem to be consistent across the country. But OK, I really have to pay more attention to making sure I get it consistent at least in a video. Thank you for pointing out the MCP3008 AD converter. That is definitely the way to go if you need more accuracy. I have a few projects on my agenda for that too. The ADC input is often sufficient, although it also has a few other problems. I actually use the stabilization capacitor too. I also like to program a moving average to measure the voltage.

Sanding removes the seam but also removes the layer lines so it's a trade-off. Using randomized outer wall starting points makes less noticeable little blobs around the cylinder. There's also a setting in Cura to stop extruding just before the end of the layer, using the oozing filament to complete the line instead of using retractions. I haven't tried it but it might be worth trying. For the missing material around the letters, could it be caused by the hot nozzle moving over the finished surfaces and melting them before reaching the spot where it prints the letters?

    soo uhh, what sorta diameter wouldi need for the80m band or 40m, lol Edit as the width and size would be huge lol. But the 144 2m band would be interesting vs a dipole or hourglass antenna

    I tried version 4_1 of your spreadsheet for a 2.44 GHz plate waveguide loop with d=0.8 mm. Alles ist in Ordnung, außer the d/D at 0.26807 has a red background. Was bedeutet das?

      In that case nothing to worry about. I am using this indicator to see if the calculation model is still valid for the other options. I haven't adjusted that on this sheet yet. Thank you for your comment. I'll have to improve that in a future version.

    I found this very interesting. I was just thinking about updating my infrared Arduino based tachometer by replacing the digital display with an analog meter face. I think you have done all the ground work to put me on the right track. This is my first Episode. Now on to follow your footsteps. Thank you. Subscribed.

      We started to develop a simple lap counter based on Arduino. However, It became much more than that. We achieved this through teamwork: electronics, coding, 3D printing and of course the slot car race track.

    3d print the antenna, then cover it with adhesive copper tape. This is better than aluminium because you can solder to it.

    Nicely done! Subscribed! Can you add a reflector to increase gain? What is the gain of this antenna usually? Can you put these in an endfire configuration?

    • @electronics.unmessed
      @electronics.unmessed 3 місяці тому

      Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, you can use a reflector. I was showing a NEC simulation on that briefly in that video: ua-cam.com/video/a5n_YWJaPkI/v-deo.html One of my subscribers built it and is using it for feeding a radio telescope. Maybe that would be worth a separate video. What do you think? For the gain, polarization, etc. please check out video: ua-cam.com/video/1xigmkPVu0k/v-deo.html For comparison with monopole antenna: ua-cam.com/video/EMwD6QOhwF0/v-deo.html Concerning an endfire array: a great idea! I definitely will put some investigations into that. BR Klaus

      @@electronics.unmessed yes all those ideas are brilliant! I looked at your other videos and your channel is amazing! I might make this antenna for 315 mhz and 433 mhz, I want to see how far I can receive TPMS bursts. Very low power, 500 KHz bandwidth, short randomly spaced bursts. Makes them fun to try and receive/decode. I remember hearing when you start networking antenna elements that the received noise is also a little higher. Is this true?

    • @electronics.unmessed
      @electronics.unmessed 3 місяці тому

      Interesting! You can probably get a more stable reception and longer range. Concerning the noise: this antenna is a bandpass and an antenna at the same time. So, you can lower noise and interference especially when using simple receivers. Do you want to read the TPMS signals over a higher range?

    • @weirdsciencetv4999
      @weirdsciencetv4999 3 місяці тому

      @@electronics.unmessedYes exactly! I discovered TPMS accidentally one day on youtube and it’s a pretty fascinating challenge to receive. I have a directional antenna (11 dBi) and then a low loss interdigital filter and then a LNA. So far furthest i have received is 240 meters away but I still think I can improve it. The signals are very faint by that distance. Also challenging is the variations in their carrier frequencies, baud rate,modulation scheme and packet format between different sensors. Usually the packet has a MAC address, tire air temp, tire air pressure, some status flags and a CRC. Besides better antenna (and allowing possibly ditching the extra filter) I will try and make some signal models that are highly unstable, where the slightest signal influences a bit flip. It will mostly output noise but the CRC should reject most invalid packets. Since packets repeat a few times in a row, i can filter detections that are not consistent.

    • @electronics.unmessed
      @electronics.unmessed 3 місяці тому

      @@weirdsciencetv4999 Wow, very interesting! The range you achieve is remarkable. I think it's also a good idea to use repeat signals to correct errors. By the way, we also have a video about it: "Reading Signals above the Noise Level...". ua-cam.com/video/3wb2u3xcSwA/v-deo.html Maybe it will be interesting for you. I have a few questions about this out of interest: Could you stand next to a road with your receiver and receive the data from vehicles passing by? Do statistics? Warn people if they drive with too low tire pressure?

    Curious, if you 3D printed this design and sprayed with graphite paint (and potentially even electroplated with another metal if desired) would it be nearly equivalent to a CNC milled part?

    • @electronics.unmessed
      @electronics.unmessed 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for your comment. That is a very good idea. Due to the skin effect, the currents at 1 GHz, for example, cannot penetrate deeper than 2 micrometers anyway. What would be thickness of electroplating?

    • @k.o.0
      @k.o.0 3 місяці тому

      Hendrick UA-camr who I would say is a professional electroplater of 3D prints often makes 3-4 spray paint coatings of graphite paint to ensure perfect smoothness and thickness of this conductive layer then enables electroplating. Electroplating of course is microns compared to the metallic graphite paint. So really the thickness of the metal is derived from these painted layers that can be sprayed or painted. The electroplating is simply a modifier for finish and durability and esthetics.

    • @electronics.unmessed
      @electronics.unmessed 3 місяці тому

      @@k.o.0 Thank you very much. I don't have any knowledge about electroplating. I was asking the thickness because you need a good conductor for the antenna. No problem when it is only 2 microns or so.
