I am a little late to the party. Thanks for sharing the DCC magic system. I do a similar thing in D&D my game where players have to roll to cast spells and then I have wild magic effects on all spells that are cast if they roll a nat 1 and bonuses for rolling a nat 20. They can cast the spells as much as they want until they roll under the to cast DC and then they have to wait and have a long rest before they can cast that spell again. Would love to see some other magic systems compared by someone who has played them, especially all of the new ones coming out this year; cosmere, daggerheart, draw steel, DC20, spheres of power. I really want the cleric and the warlock to have a completely different magic system from the wizard, who has a different system from the sorcerer, etc...

First season or critical role was D&D played by actors. Nowadays its a TV show about D&D. TV shows are to be watched, D&D is ment to be played. Very diffrent experience.

Short rests as a concept are great for attrition gameplay, because they aren't free. Hit dice are a resource that needs to be managed, using them too quickly will cut your adventuring day short or leave you weakened for the final fight. Also having two types of rest allows for different cycles of resource attrition, and more varied gameplay. Long rests are a bigger problem for attrition in 5e. Making your players rely less on long rests and more on short rests does a lot to make resource management in game more of a challenge that needs to be overcome.

Early editions had no spell slots. None. There is a number of spells per spell level you can memorize. You study, memorize and use them, no "up casting" or such with spell slots.

To be fair... the way you described for getting the players to learn new spells in 5e is how it is supposed to work... for the most part. Divine casters like paladins, clerics and druids get access to their whole spell list, but they have to prepare their spells ahead of time. These are miracles that they've prayed for and their deity has granted them. As long as the spell is prepared, they don't need to do anything to re-prepare that spell unless they want to swap it with something else. A DM should emphasize the roleplay scene of such a character doing their daily routine of prayer alongside getting ready to travel or getting ready for bed depending on whether they prefer to pray at night or in the morning. Wizards on the other hand, only get a single new spell each level to represent their growing understanding of how to weave magic while under the duress of combat. Experimenting with various combinations of spell components. Wizards will have a small list of spells to use unless their DM actually rewards the group with spellbooks that already have spells in them, scrolls the wizard can copy into their spellbook, and especially time for the wizard to make consumable magical items such as potions and spell scrolls. Any Wizard not spending their downtime and gold making magic items isn't using their downtime in its fullest capacity. It doesn't mean that you can't use your downtime for other things, but spell scrolls are an easy way for a wizard to boost their low spell-per-day count without using any of their spell slots. Sure, creating the spell costs whatever slot you prepared the spell at for the day, but if you have a week to prepare for the adventure, any wizard should be Batman. These are things that, sadly, 5e doesn't draw a whole lot of attention towards. It states that this is how spells are supposed to be prepared and available... but few people actually seem to delve into that part of the magic system. I personally love the idea of adding the mercurial magic table to 5e and seeing how it might change the feeling of the spells, but my players already mess with the flavor of the spells enough that I simply enjoy the straightforward mechanics of the magic system in 5e.

DCC is a joke! I think it all is just so stupid. I bought it several months ago and so disappointed. And you call DCC a system? No it is a total joke. In fact, the first few pages it tells you to rely mostly on what you already know from other systems. So it is just a ridiculous version of "Home Brew Rules". It is not a system but a different ideas about how to run spells in your campaign. I don't like it at all.

3/3.5 is a great edition. For me, it solved many of the problems I'd had with 1e and really opened up the possibilities of what could be done with a character. And I totally agree the 1e DMG is indispensable, and I'd put the 1e PHB right there with it. Plus, I only played WHFRP (1e) a couple of times, but it was fantastic. I always wanted to explore it more. Good luck with your Frankenstein-ing!

1e ad&d had minimum number of spells per spell level. A magic user had to go through the list of spells making a percentile roll. If you fail the roll that caster cannot learn that spell, unless their intelligence is permanent increased. The caster still has to find that spell somewhere in the world. The maximum puts a cap on spells from that spell level group. Clerics have a chance to fail any spell that they cast with a wisdom of 12, or less. There is also minimum intelligence, and wisdom required to cast higher level spells. If your players are making characters that roll 3d6 down the line. No selecting which roll goes for whatever attribute that player wants. If a player spends the time rerolling all their attributes for an 18 intelligence. Only to fail by a 15% chance to learn a desirable 1st level spell. Tear up the character sheet and start over once again.

1°. I allow to throw 4d6 and keep the highest 3, because players will be playing heroes roles, not peasants 2°. I allow a death punctuation of 0 - Constitution points (not modifier), giving an effective -10 hp limit to characters with Constitution 10. In contrast, all attacks can drop below 0 if it hits hard enough (and kill inmediatly if surpasses the death punctuation limit) 5°. Doesn't sound very fun to players. "Doesn't make sense to me" is not something players going to buy. Two fatal GM mistakes. In my case, I felt mages and sorcerers redundant so propose to them an alternative. 6°. Nonsense to play Third Edition. Multiclassing and Prestige Classes are the whole point of the game. Maybe you should jump to Fifth instead 7°. At higher levels, your system is worst than regular natural healing. The rest sounds like a lot of boring formality for both players and GM. Some of it doesn't even make sense at all (druid butching animals). Remember that GM assuring a fun session is more important than building a game world (is also important, but fun is first)

I love the older school style of play your homebrew is geared toward. I'll comment on a couple of your ideas and just compare it to what I do as points of interest, not telling you to do it my way. I'm a big supporter of magic-users needing to find and learn their spells. In my homebrew of B/X D&D magic-users get to choose one spell per level as something they can figure out themselves with training between levels, but everything else has to be found in the world as scrolls or a stored spell in sacred texts or a standing stones, or some other form. I also regulate spell learning by the amount of resources that have to be expended. The cost in resources expressed as currency increases exponentially with spell level. I also use coins to EXP as big part of character advancement, so there is a trade off between leveling up the character and learning a wider array of spells. On healing. I prefer to run HP as a character's ability to avoid serious injury. Critical hits and hitting 0 HP are where death and dismemberment tables (Helmets and Halberds, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Lion and Dragon as examples) come in to keep things gritty and dangerous. I've also mostly removed any kind of magical healing that is easily accessible to the characters, particularly in combat. I did need a way to allow them to recover HP after fights. For me the thematic way to do that was to allow them to recover HP with a couple of hours of rest in a safe place and a hot meal. This also makes cooking supplies and things people would really want with them more important. I would let them recover 1d3 HP a couple of times a day. HP totals are lower in B/X style games, so that's pretty significant.

I've really been dying to get into a Pathfinder 1e game or a D&D 3.0/3.5 game. I never played this edition. The last edition I played was 2nd edition AD&D. Nirvana had just released Nevermind. Oh and for the record, you totally can min-max in AD&D 2e. I had a friend in my group who min-maxed a ranger and it was annoying as hell. We had no idea there was a term for it, but it was definitely a thing back in that edition!

DCC magic is a LOT of fun! Savage Worlds (my favorite system), on the other hand, has a completely customizable, Power Point-based magic system that offers a selection of "generic" powers that the PLAYER customizes via Trappings and Power Modifiers. In Savage Worlds, "magic missile" is "Bolt." The user decides if it's fire, electricity, a stream of insects, etc. These can then have specific effects against targets with environmental weaknesses, they do damage between 2d6 and 4d6 depending on the die roll or the spending of additional Power Points. It's great stuff!

Not trying to tell you what you should or should not play, the magic system for DCC sounds really freaking cool and it'd love to try it out or implement some version of it in other ttrpgs(Dragonbane could be a really cool fit for it tbh), but some of your comments just make it feel like you don't really know 5e. Stuff like -describing only the wizard's spell prep and then acting like that's all 5e spell prep when other classes with spellcasting differ fairly substantially, -not understanding the core fantasy of a wizard and just assuming spells magically pop up in their spellbook when it's obviously a simple way to show that the wizard has been studying(since wizards are defined by needing to study to learn spells), -not understanding that yeah literally anyone can become a warlock??? like, your party's fighter can take a level in warlock at literally any point they so choose, it's not even limited to only previous magic users, -saying 5e spellcasters just always succeed in getting their spell of without having to make checks and then mentioning both types of checks that need to be made in order to see if a spell is cast successfully??? -not considering how adding class lvl to abilities would severely fuck up bounded accuracy nor that proficiency bonus is literally meant to be the answer to exactly how you could implement that idea without breaking the game Again, not saying the DCC magic system doesn't sound fucking dope. This made me super-excited to try it out. And honestly not even saying 5e is my favorite magic system or anything, i myself have quite a few problems with it and prefer other systems. But we can critique and compare systems without either misrepresenting stuff.

You are a bit wrong on how spells worked in 3/3.5 a wizard can cast any spell in their spell book which they know if they have a spell slot for it, and each time they get new spells they get to add two spells to their spell book. This is different from Sorcerer who just know the spell inherently but only know so many and don't need to prepare them.

This is such a horse shit argument. I just got introduced to this game. I've been an on again off again progression raider in WoW and now in Wrath Classic. Just finished my 4th D&D session. Been enjoying writing multiple short back stories, painted a mini, made a folder that has black and white velcro in it to hold onto numbered velcrow tokens for spell slots & bardic inspiration, cause the Character is a bard, wrote up some songs. The other people named their characters stupid random names, one player literally named his character after Testicles , they all wrote no backstory, painted no minis and they are the ones playing like they don't care & don't care if their bullshit character dies. They'd be the ones sitting in the cave drowning not me. I've reached out to my DM and asked for an alternative to permanent death. I said it's bullshit the contribution I make is what gets flushed down the toilet cause if I die I instantly reroll a new character with the same level and appropriate gear and just keep trucking along. I requested instead actual mechanic penalties like loosing my gold, my gear, going down a level getting a curse or reducing the amount of spells I could use for a while to make the failure impactful but not take something I've created on my own and just dump it. The irony is people like me are asking for the mechanical aspect of the game to actually be HARDER. The more people like you I see online the more I'm getting to know this game's community and it looks like it's mostly arrogant uptight pricks that are unimaginative people more interested in rolling a fast cookie cutter token PC and just rolling dice. Good luck getting more people to play this game with if you alienate new people like me with this holier than thou bullshit attitude I see constantly .

Campaign set piece, .. a.) Have players pull index cards with pre generated N/PC.. PC have a main profession with secondary profession skills, all part of the local militia. b.) Start the PCs out in the middle of action and don't tell them why till the end of the hallway battle encounter. Which turn out being nothing more than a battle drill. Roll dice/draw cards on their background in play. c.) After a day's N/PC hometown interactions. Testing out social skill rolls along with some athletics they get into a dock fight with some drunken out of towners. The out of towners accidently get killed/or jailed, and the town elders tell the PC they now own a small sail fishing boat. Start making boating & fishing/ sailor checks.

1:03:00 session zero, .. Everyone is part of the local militia, it is your turn to clear out the large spiders taking up space under the windmill or barn. Practice melee drill ran by the local elders, .. Road guard patrol, checking up on road/trail bandits or goat rustlers. Had one player PC start off as a dock worker repackaging salted port, killing rats, stray dogs trying to get to the storage food stocks. Another time I sent the party into a 30ft by 60ft under ground ruin ? Turn out it they were carpenters checking out their school ma basement, clearing out giant rats and incest's. Started off everyone at multiclass 4th-level characters. Had everyone at FUll HP Max. yeah, .. they were super heroes on leather armor coveralls with small hand ax/hammers doing 1d6dmg. " Scared dog runs at full speed bumping into your hip, make dexterity/balance check to remain standing in place and strength roll to stand your ground. " Anyone who grew up with large dogs Know how that turns out. Get knocked off your feet bouncing into the wall. take 1d3dmg. Rotted staircase falls as you try to walk down it, take 1d6dmg. When I give PC full class max Hp with a bonus of 20 temporary Hp, they know the game is going to be survival horror. Then again we treat Hp as Avoiding serious harm or stamina. Near misses, parries, blocks as stress joint pain reflex/ muscle fatigue =Hp. Body damage is constitution damage.

Myth about hunter/gathers, they set traps around the field they are grazing their herds. and they keep close to the 12mile over the horizon from their main family thorp. 12:00, .. skulls or skeletons means have numerous local populations to harvest. Also of note, due to poor medicine or divine aid, most skeletons local buried will be that of young children or teenagers. Due to crop rotation, it take a full sq mile to support a population of 600. Which is made up by ten families related by blood or not. So a 6mile hex could have a settlement of 3,600pop. Or spread out farms and fence grazing pastures. On a good road a wagon could cover 15minles per day. If hilly grade a 6mile jog in under an hour across land could take 18milies going back and forth up the hillside.

Other questions regarding folk lore and history, .. looking at Hungry, Russia, and even the English legends of the Wildmen of Wales. Tribal exiles sent off into the badlands, over time became their own lose base ethic cultural groups. It has been debated that hobgoblin was a British slur on the Wales hill people. Hob, smaller than average. Not meaning D&D orc/hobgoblin Klingon. Hobble, lame or cripple limb. So you have hob-goblin, or hobgoblin. But bugbears were larger fairy monsters that hunted goblins. English bugbear was an irrational fear .. bugging .. someone's mental state.

You DO roll for success on a LOT of spells. You cast Firebolt, you roll to hit. Sometimes, others roll to negate your spell's effects. Fighters don't roll to successfully get a second attack, or second action. They just do. But they do roll to attack or perform said action. It'd feel kinda bad if, before you attack, you roll to see if you can ATTEMPT to attack your enemy.

Or what not HomebrewRules 1. 3d6 for abilities 2. When health drops to 0 you have “X” rounds before you die (x being CON modifier) 3. Spell acquisition is not automatic (days needed to learn that spell equal spell level) - Wizard: Spell scrolls or grimoires and then schooling - Cleric: Prayerbooks and then pray - Druid: Sacrifice an animal 4. Race & Class Restrictions 5. Prohibited Classes (Depending on setting) 6. NO multi-classing or feats 7. For natural healing you gain 1 hit point per day (resting in a shrine or temple dedicated to your god restores hit die plus con modifier) 8. No plot (Factions and npcs have their own motivations and goals. The players need to be active participants in the world. NO waiting for the dm to move pcs along)

Reaching 0 hp: make a con check, if u succeed then your pc is stable, if u fail pc has x number of rounds before death. This is how i generally play that. Keeping in mind that a round is 6 seconds. One reason i ruled this was a pc got punched by an unarmed attack and hig 0. A punch isnt gonna necessarily kill you every time, specially if its like a gut punch. By throwing the con check in the mix it kinda adds just enough real to our heroes.

I got to rule 4 and started rolling my eyes so hard I developed a headache...ok where to start First off: just tell your players no prep casters rather then make the entire game about the wizards and clerics getting access to their class abilities while everyone else just wakes up knowing how to use their class abilities with no practice... seems unbalanced to me but whatever, now either the wizard gets no new spells EVER or the game is Constantly interrupted by downtime as the prep casters need to learn new spells! Otherwise you end up with a 7th level wizard with Burning hands as their highest level combat spell. Gee that sounds like fun (eye roll). Just say no prep casters or you will just be punishing the player silly enough to think those house rules sound fun. meanwhile a fighter gets to wake up and just know any feat he qualifies for with no practice or trainers? Ya that sounds super fair and balanced. Second: race/class restrictions were dropped from the game for 3E for several Great reasons, They are pointlessly restrictive and make zero sense, that are assuming every member of a race is exactly like every other (except good old hoomans) with no outliers of any kind and that just silly and IMHO ignorant as well. Again just tell your players to only play stereotypes unless they play humans. So to reiterate in your game if I want to play a Wood Elf wizard that's not allowed no matter how interesting or inventive my char concept is... that's just Cartman screaming ""NO! WOOD ELVES ARE ONLY RANGERS OR DRUIDS DAMNIT!!!"" See how silly it sounds? To much like EverQuest for my taste. Are you forgetting that PCs are generally the exception to the norm as adventuring is a fast way for 99% of All races to find a quick and violent death??? Sounds to me like A player playing a wood elf Wizard hurt you and your still in pain But this is Not "The Way" to balance ANYTHING it just makes sorcerers/divine souls the more versatile caster As Well as the longest lasting while they are meant to only be one of those things. EDIT: ok so no spontaneous casters in your game I guess, Why do you hate magic users? Honestly asking here. OK I will now watch the rest of your video so anything past this is an edit... EDIT: Watched till the last rule (less of a rule and more of a DMing technique/preference but tomato/potato) ok so if you don't want to allow player to play Monk PCs that's up to you but your stated reason is lame... If I were the DM and a player wanted to play a PC that was not within the Ascetics of my world, like for instance an Asian style monk in my European style campaign I would make it clear they are the exception not the rule, they would be considered exotic and strange and would stick out like a sore thumb and would be Very easily followed and tracked OR I would suggest they play as a Non-Asian themed martial artist (Europe had martial artists BTW, ever hear of Greco-Roman wrestling or Bare knuckle boxing?). Either way you don't need to remove a class... Just reskin it. Sorcerers: honestly if your going to over restrict wizards like that then you Should probably lose sorcerer as well because if you don't no one will EVER play a wizard , I mean they aren't going to anyway but you get the point. That being said I wanted to comment on the "no one is born with arcane magic" part... what about Gnomes and Drow? Or any of the non PC races that start with spell like abilities? What about Bards? 3E requires zero collage training to be a bard, that's a 5E thing. I mean no reason you can't use bard collages but it still falls outside your homebrew requiring (gasp) more homebrew... Ad Nauseam. Natural Healing: ok so one HP per night of rest... that means a wizard heal at 2x the rate of a fighter and 3 times faster then the barbarian? Think about it! A 5the level fighter has an average of about 27.5 HP assuming no con mod while the wizard has only 12.5 HP. That means if both are brought to 1 HP and rest for several days the wizard will be at full HP in half the time it takes the fighter to heal the same amount. so the smaller the HD of a class the faster they heal? Dose that make sense? Is it balanced? I honestly like the idea of healing more when in certain places but why restrict it to worship of a Deity? So there are no PCs that don't like the gods in your world huh, not when it means they don't get as much healing as the rest of the party? You seem to want to restrict the concepts that Players are allowed to play in your game but rather then say what you want them to play your restricting everything else... seems like a lot of work but its your time to spend as you see fit. But back to my point, if you restrict healing that much you will only force PCs to spend a LOT of time healing if there is no "healing location" available, lets use a 5th level Barbarian for example, average HP of 32.5 if they take say 16 points of damage so they are at half HP so the party needs to rest, well depending on what you consider to be a "nights rest" that mean from 5-16 days for the Barbarian to be at full HP, add that to the 1 Day per Level fort he casters to learn spells and for every day of actual adventuring they will be spending 10 days regaining HP/learning class abilities they should already have. I'm already exhausted just thinking about running or playing in a game like that. I mean one 30 second fight leads to over a week of healing/resting? That may be more realistic but its WAY LESS fun. Multiclassing: This one I definitely get as I have played/DM'd a Lot of 3E and the fastest way to break the game is with multiclassing (there are rules to help with this in the system already, see Favored class XP penalties). However if you do allow Prestige classes (I would) some of them require 2 base classes to qualify for them. Mystic Theurge is a glaring example as it requires access to both Devine and Arcane magic. So either go through and make it clear which prestige classes are allowed before character creation because you MUST plan for prestige classes in 3E often from level 1. Also requiring PCs find and learn prestige classes is not homebrew its always been the case. I would suggest allowing multiclassing but with some caveats similar to Monk RAW, when you stop leveling in a particular class you cant go back to that class and no "cherry picking" less then 3 levels of any class. Oh and BTW the favored class rules support your "race as class" concept without making hard rules restricting class selection based on race (still think that's a BAD idea but hey its your game). Plot: Look I get running a sandbox game if that's what you (And your players) are into. Again that's more of a choice then a rule but I digress... I respect you not wanting to put your PCs on a rail BUT that doesn't mean there shouldn't be available roads (Plural!) that they can Choose to follow. Even in a sandbox VG you have quest giving NPCs so as long as they aren't lacking for leads they (PCs) should do fine. To be honest Most DMs that I've seen do this are doing it to make the PCs write the plot which if they are aware of can be fun but in my experience will end up just aimlessly wondering the sandbox inevitably becoming Murder Hobos, YMMV. At any rate these are NOT GOOD RULES FOR NEW DMS!!! PERIOD! At best these are "advanced" rule changes for Experienced DMs and Players, not newbies as these fundamentally change how the 3E system functions and would not work well in Most games and I can say with some certainty that I would not play in a Campaign with any of these house rules with the possible exception of no multiclassing but that's more about problem players (see Min/Maxers and PowerBuilder) then it is about system issues. But of Course as long as you don't violate Rule Zero you should be fine. BTW for the new people to the hobby Rule Zero is as follows ""0: As long as Everyone (DM included) is having fun your gaming correctly"" 😁

Yes, a wood elf wizard stole my bike when I was young. It’s haunted me since. Thanks for watching and commenting.

It seems like you and I would not be a good fit. Which is fine, btw. This is how I run my table. I’m always open to hear contrary ideas from my own. Because of that, these rules will likely change over the course of the campaign. Despite your insults, I do appreciate that you took time out of your day to tell me how terrible my house rules are. Peace.

Basically a lot of what you house ruled is actually in the B/X rules as core. I would highly recommend you check out Old School Essentials ;)

@@magicusergames I think it will be right up your alley as a game. You'll love it's grittiness and the design. It's so easy to read

For character creation, you may want to consider 3D6, 1D4, drop the lowest die. On average, the players should get 2 positive abilities for each negative one, as opposed to the 5 to 1 ratio for 4D6. I'm surprised it's not more common.

That’s a good idea, might steal that. Thanks for the comment!
