Testing Soil for Durable Compressed Earth Blocks
Переглядів 1 тис.Місяць тому
In this video, we continue tweaking the soil, sand, and clay ratios to perfect our compressed earth blocks. The right amount of water has been tricky to figure out, and the sandy soil on our land tends to crumble easily. To improve the mix, we sourced two different clay-rich soils-one from a local stockyard and another from our friend Mark. It’s been a long road, and we're still far from perfec...

In this video, we tackle replacing the old, brittle AC shroud on our 2000 Dutchman travel trailer. We found a budget-friendly replacement on Amazon, but it wasn’t a perfect fit right out of the box-it needed some work. Instead of using the original rivets, we opted for nuts, bolts, and washers for a more secure and easier installation. We’re all about finding the simplest ways to get the job do...

How to Build a Foldable Outdoor Table for Your Skoolie Adventure!
If you were to order this machine over again, would you get Diesel?
This video showed up in my suggestions because of my interest in stabilized compressed earth blocks. Yes! Finally someone in the US working with the interlocking ones! You got a new subscriber!
I am not an expert but I do pay attention... 1. I do not believe clay and cement mix particularly well, they mess eachother up. 2. Mixers are designed to mix, the internet is dumb, be lazy. 3. Your soil would have some clay content and clay LOVES water, more water = more gooder. 4. Adding some kind of fibre may be beneficial.
Concrete strength depends partially on the aggregate you add to it. It's about a 10% mix of Portland to sand or gravel or fly ash, or what ever you have an abundance of. Rammed earth is more specific. You want to use like 7 parts soil, 2 parts sand to 1 part portland. However, this changes if your soil has a high clay or silt content. You either have to step up your sand or topsoil content to find that perfect point of binding. Before Portland cement was invented, lime was used. (Lime, animal blood, slaked plaster, horse hair...) Your last block seem the most sturdy, but the super wet material when pressing blocks will prevent the compression you are looking for to get the most out of you Cinva ram. It's like hydraulic resistance. When you use less moisture you get maximum compression, then you want to cover the bricks with a tarp for 24 to 48 hours to let the portland work, then you want to wet the bricks down and recover them with a tarp, and then continue to re-wet the bricks when they appear to look dry for the next 45 days. A concrete foundation, wall, etc usually takes about 45 days to cure before it is hard enough to build onto. A lot of times forms are left on the concrete to slow the drying process down. You can make CEB blocks harder than the concrete block in your video, but it requires keeping the bricks wet. I've made concrete sculptures where after the concrete cured hard enough to handle, I submerged the sculpture for about 48 days in water, and it is probably the strongest piece of concrete I've ever made. The higher content of clay in your mix, the longer it is going to take for the CEB block to cure. Rammed earth walls can take years to cure.
Why didn’t you add some hay?
We did think about it but we just haven’t gotten around to trying it. There has to be a reason that other compressed bricks don’t use it. But we may try. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@leeslivingoutofthenorm I would highly recommend it. I've also heard that plant material can be used as long as it does the same job as the hay. Looking forward to your next experiment. Where in AZ are you located? I'm in Phoenix. Let me know if a site visit would be possible sometime next year.
Yea super gay! And if ur gonna have a paddle switch make it a variable, so the harder u squeeze the faster it goes! Just like grinders have been for 40 yrs

The internet is finally defeated! The fact that the strongest one is from material right ther eon your land and at your fingertips is good as far a supply availability! Should be able to make out like bandits ans save time and money in that aspect. Looking forward to seeing how the new block mover from out the machine yall are working on turns out... -N
Thanks! Tell me why a squirrel ran by and now I’m looking at gardening stuff! I blame you!
@@leeslivingoutofthenorm hahaha...as you should!!! -N
the bad part is that it’s all they are stocking at the big box stores like home depot and lowes, they are making people buy those more by having the paddle switch readily available and the lock switch to order. the paddle switch really limits you compared to the lock switch
100% agree. I wasn’t really thinking about it when I bought it but my cheap corded harbor freight special is easier to use because of the switch.
THANKS FOR SHARING
@@saladin333 Thank you for watching! 😊
It seems like you added too much water. It's almost impossible to get a homogeneous mixture from the concrete mixer.
We’re about to upload a new video about that, and so far, our wetter blocks are proving to be the strongest. We are sure we still need to tweak the soil ratios though. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I owed the hand CEB press but haven't used it yet on my property in East Texas, I did a soil test and my soil is also very sandy with minimal clay. Like beach sand. I am currently digging deeper to see if I can obtain more clay in my mix.
Thank you for your comment. We are going to mess around with the mixture some more. Try digging in different areas. Sandy soil may not be too bad than having too much clay soil for this type of build. You and us both just have to outsource clay. Good luck on your build!
You need 50-70 percent sand plus some gravel , 25-30 clay plus silt.... Am using a manual press to learn making these .learning curve is steep but once you get right mix you can make them fast ...1500. -2000 a day.
Thank you for your comment! That sounds exciting and promising to hear how many blocks you can make once we get our mix right!! Good luck on your build! We think we need about 7k blocks to build a house we are thinking of as of now lol 😅 Our house might end up 400 sqft because we don’t want to make blocks anymore. lol. We will see. Wish us luck! We cannot wait to get the point we just make blocks without thinking. Hopefully the day comes soon.
That soil is too sandy and has a less amount of clay, it is not good for this purpose ... Try with a soil of about 15 to 20% of clay, and Cement is just to help water resistant and proofing so 10% should be fine ... Clay is binding material here so it is needed and sand 70 to 75% (construction sand) is very important to make the formula strong and none sticky
Thank you for your comment. Yes we definitely need more clay in our mix. Amount of water is still a challenge for us. We still have a lot to learn. Wish us luck!
@@leeslivingoutofthenorm try this formula : 10% cement 15 -20% clay 70-75% sand 8% water - Again here water depends on if the sand is wet or not!!! - Cement is for water proofing - Clay is for binding - Water is for cement activation
@@mosimba2665 Thank you for your advice. We will definitely try that!

The last time a solar sales guy came to the door, he happened to mention how expensive solar ground mounts are. I've seen some close to the ground mounts being about $100 per panel. If you are going big poles and structure, that gets more expensive, and shade is a premium thing in a lot of places, especially Arizona, so setting things up to also create some helpful shade is a plus. Of course roofs for catching water are also a high value in Arizona.
Actually $$ correction. Saw a video review of IntegraRack: $545 for ground mount for 4 large panels, so more like almost $140 per panel. Mountings are expensive.
For sure they are more expensive than I expected! Thanks for the comment.
Normally, digging holes like that, you would dig a little bit of the hole and then pour water in and let it soak before digging more. Out in Arizona though, water is not as easy to come by. And then there are the rocks: water won't help that.
Those rocks hurt my feelings!
Also, maybe look into a soft starter. The power probably surges like an air-conditioning unit when certain tasks are performed. They use these on large air conditioners.
That’s for the comment!
It’s drawing too much power for your solar system. Either the max power draw from the inverter or the battery bank can’t keep up with the power draw. It’s not the machine. I would rent a big gas generator, Plug in a device that will show you the power draw between the machine and the generator and then take note of how much power it’s drawing at different states of the machine usage. Then you’ll know your max draw and you can scale up your solar system to match. I think you simply need an inverter with a larger power draw. Mine says 4000w but it trips at much less power draw. my view is always double your inverter to what you think you actually need. Good luck guys! I love what you guys are doing.
Thanks for the comment. I will be doing some changes to the machines setup. I do know that I have 13K watts worth of inverter power. I’m gonna put a video out about it shortly.
Love it
Thank you!

We should, shouldn’t we!? Hopefully someday we get to the project again. 😊The material we used was pretty pricey and it was a bit too stiff for this project. It definitely looks great though. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for finding our video and commenting. Good luck on your project!! Sometimes (often) things don’t go the way planned but it comes with the adventure!
If your electric motor keeps tripping you can easily replace it with a combustion motor from harbor freight. Way more reliable.
I have thought about doing that. I am trying to get a different motor. I will put a video about it out as soon as I do.
One of the techniques that I thought of using for the block curing process was to install hot water solar panels to a wood kiln - the ability to cure the block under moist conditions increases the psi due to slow hydration . It is something that I would like to try to accomplish for the block to our well house. Just a small test project.
Interesting. Are you finding that your blocks are not holding up?
Nice!
Thank you! It is working great!!
Great job!?👍🏾... i will be doing this soon
