How to Improve Throwing for Ultimate Frisbee!
Nice. What was the camera used?
gopro w/ head mount!
I think one thing you can probably create and elaborate on with a video is where to aim for a huck.. (throw selection) ie. if you are on the right sideline and you have a whole space forward and your O is streaking towards the end zone.. how are you going to throw it if your are right handed and no wind. will you choose your flick to throw towards essentially the skinny area? or are you throwing a backhand essentially that floats further towards the break side.. I think its underrated how this isn't talked about as much in the Ulti. community.. throw selection esp. for hucks..
a really good point!! i think that's perhaps a "201" level video but that's a great video idea - will put it in the backlog and hopefully get to it at some point haha
Love the format! One question though. Have you tried fixing the camera to the chest? Sometimes the head movements are too fast and disorienting. And maybe it could show what you do with your hands much better.
i decided to not mount to chest because of (1) layouts - would hurt more :'( and also (2) wanted to show where i'm looking and when, since I think that's an important piece of showing newer players what i'm looking at and when i'm making decisions based on what info i have!
similar situation rn, this helped a lot
i am glad it's helpful <3
Proud of you! Love what you do, keep playing!
thank you!!
Very well said. Good for you, brother.
ty brother o7
Could you do a video on how to play good defense?
I'm glad you're taking care of yourself.🙂
thank you!!
Dang...breaking down throws is HARD and you made it look easy..thx for the content, found it very useful. Would love to learn more about how to add/practice touch.
Appreciate the feedback! The explanation that made sense to me is (logically) you want to maximize RPMs of disc while slowing down velocity of disc. (practically) this means you want to try to focus on keeping wrist snap, but slowing down your arm swing motion. Kurt Gibson has a good video on "the touch flick"!
15:47 off a swing, the player guarding 87 in dark closed up on 87 immediately, she was able to put on a force right away, but also by doing so she was not able to stop the next break side continuation. What do you think you would do in this case and how do you feel abt the trade-off?
good question! tbh the higher level you get, the better folks are at breaking the mark. In indoors especially, since there's no wind, it's extremely tough to "stop" all throws to breakside continue, the best you can do is try to alter the throw to slow them down or make it harder to catch (e.g. loopier, more around, over-the-top, etc). I think the way the mark played it was good and forced a high-release backhand! Maybe just later in the play, if that situation happens again, play it exactly the same but bait/anticipate the high-release backhand and try to get the handblock.
hate from Seattle.
I live by this god tier wisdom
hahaha i hope it serves you well!
I'm gonna try this at practice next week.
hope it went well o7
Possibly the greatest advice I’ve ever heard
thank u sir o7=
lets goooo good luck!
tyty!!
That's a very ADHD symptom.
LMFAOOOOOOO!!! 😂😂😂
:'D
almost skipped this video but i’m glad i came back
i'm glad you did too <3
I just got back from playing in Japan and noticed the majority of players pause there flick before release like what you say not to do at 43:29. I agree with you that it does more harm than good, but I’m curious on your thoughts as to why they do it and why it works for them? Are they limiting upside? For me I think they are signaling that they are ready to throw. But if you watch any footage of the Japan team they tend to exaggerate the pause and leaning to throw the flick especially in their warm up.
i think that might generally go back to "there is no correct form, 100%"! i think each kind of throw has pros/cons (one of the main pros being like you mentioned!), and for the North American "meta" that I've learned, it's just easier to teach what I grew up learning/copying which was mainly NA throwers. great point though!
I did not know where it was gonna go the whole time but it also was not disappointing
I guess I don't get it. What is the takeaway?
tbh still figuring it out myself, i just like to yap sometimes :) i think the realization i was trying to convey was: my dad was (and still is) extremely considerate of me, despite me not realizing it at the moment
Yes, I see that. I guess, I took that for granted. I should call up my parents and apologize for being an ungrateful brat. Tell them I love them, etc. Thank you for posting. Have a great weekend! XOXO
you got this
thanks!!
These in-depth guide are really helpful! I have trouble with my flick positing and never really thought about if my hand placement could've been the issue. I'll be making sure to adjust!
Appreciate that! Glad you're finding it helpful :)
Wait this is bonkers lmfao
what is :o
this video randomly appeared to my whilst i was swiping through shorts and: please keep up, Im subscribing and hoping to see you more and posting about every step you take, just keep going, it’s holesome that you are recording and posting your journey I BELIEVE IN YOU!! A tight hug from Portugal 🇵🇹
thank you!!!! i appreciate it, and am really happy to hear from folks around the world so it's quite cool to have a person say hi from portugal haha
For Xmas I went to Amazon and bought one of those nets for my backyard. You should get an affiliate link for it... or see if they do sponsorships. ;) Another great video. I'm trying to lose the yips on my flick right now so another forehand session is great timing for me. Keep em coming!
Thanks for the tip, the referral link was just recently added!! and happy to help, glad you're finding these videos useful :)
You got this bro!
thank you!!
Keep goin strong gng, u got this 🙏🏼
thank you m8 🙏🏼
All the best!
thank you!!
Travel .......... jk, just wanted to comment xD
You aren't wrong. The guy in black took 6 steps with all of the frisbees over and over again and expected us not to notice.
LOL ty for commenting for the algo 👍
love the in depth explanations! taking notes for my own throwing but also for when I'm coaching beginners
Glad it was helpful!!
Hey there... In 2004 I tore my PCL. The orthosurgeon told me I'd never play again. In 2006 I cocaptained the NZ Mixed Ulti team at World's - I was 36 on Finals Day I know how hard this is to stay positive. It's scary and it throws up huge blockers. Know that it is possible, and you can do it, and it is a matter of support, drive and a healthy dose of ego push. Do the work - the physio and gym stuff is key, and recognition that we get older, we stress our bodies loads and we can focus to achieve our goals Keep hucking
thank you for the kind encouragement!! really great to hear that you were so resilient :)
@@cchanulti - I'm cheering you on from the other side of the world. My instinct was to push too hard and it delayed things. Be mindful (and demure??) and listen to your body. It's something that you clearly want and the Ulti community is global. We are behind you and rooting for you. Good luck
I believe in you! 🫡🙌🫶
thank you!!
When I first started learning frisbee, the thing that fascinated me most was throwing mechanics, and to hear such indepth explanation is a boon to your experience as a coach. Top notch!
Appreciate the kind words! Glad you enjoyed the breakdown :)
How did ur injury happen? And I Really hope u make Team Canada (sending love from another fellow Canadian) ❤
initially first bothered me at the end of Rush szn in 2022, had to sit out last game because pain was immense - best guess was my body wasn't used to uptick to 3-5 sessions/wk with the two teams I played that yr, plus I'd gained like 20lbs right before szns started and didn't train properly has flared up the past two summer seasons, and was the worst during middle of 2024 Rush szn when I literally couldn't run in a straight line without having to stop because of the sharp sharp pain has been doing better with new physio exercises/focus! thank you for the msg and appreciate the well-wishes :)
Does Disc possession change after a score?
yes! person who scored drops the disc and opponent picks it up there and initiates play
Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays to you too, hope you're having a great one!
Your videos motivate me to keep working on my game! Greetings from Austria
Haha glad to hear it!!! goodluck from Canada :) feel free to DM me on IG if you ever want to just chat ulti-related things, would love to get to know ulti players from around the world 🌎
@@cchanultiWill do! :)
what turf cleats are you using?
New Balance 442 indoor lacrosse ones, I believe! They're not super grippy because of the shallow studs, so I'm also going to be getting a pair of Nike Harauche 8 pros (from eBay since I think they're an older model) at the suggestion of a teammate :)
3:35 "Oh jeez its cchan"
hahaha I think he was more saying it in terms of "oh jeez, I'm subbing right infront of the disc", but perhaps it was that 🥹
This is so interesting to watch. A random question, if I want to improve my throws, do you recommend throwing with someone or just setting up a net and practicing my throws or a mix between both?
A great question!! imo it matters more about your ~mindset~ rather than who you're throwing with (although the person or lack thereof could affect mindset) in terms of improving throws. Check out an earlier vid of mine to get more context (the first few mins!) ua-cam.com/video/cB5epNV0QPE/v-deo.html After you've got the intentionality/mindset piece, I think it's more about what's more fun/sustainable for practicing - it's usually more fun to toss w people (and only need 1 disc to get lots of reps instead of solo where you need 5+ and have to collect them after throwing a set) but if you're unable to meet up w/ someone, then a solo prac session is miles better than doing nothing. Hope that helps!! Feel free to ask any further Qs, I enjoy answering :)
What is this format you guys are playing? Very interesting
It's 6v6 speedpoint! So subs on the fly, 3W/3M, and no pulls (other than at the start of game and halftime)
@@cchanulti thanks! will definitely have a go.. seems more efficient
these videos are so helpful, thank you!
Glad you're finding them useful, appreciate you watching!!
first move by justin was nasty w bro
yeee the upline scoop is nasty when it works well :)
@@cchanulti Not a scoop when the mark goes the wrong way lmao.
Just want to clarify this version of Ultimate. Its one pull till half then another pull to start the second half. And on a score the non scoring team pics up from the spot it was caught to restart instead of a pull. Am I missing anything?:)
Correct!! Called "speedpoint" ultimate. Also, subs on the fly :)
26:23 model
Haha had to pause in it and think :')
I like your way with words, all constructive and detailed. Learnt so much on fundamentals in this!
Thanks for watching, glad you picked up some helpful tips!!
When bro say, let me think a minute, he actually come out with brilliant insights
Haha thanks man, appreciate it :') Was there a specific moment that made you think of this? Helps me reflect and get better at coaching!
awesome video, I found so many super helpful tips! I like how involved you got with the grip, foot placement, and how you hold the disc in the neutral position. This is a must watch for anyone struggling with io flick imo. For me your point about moving the elbow too far forward was so key. I am looking forward to getting some film of my throws in to check on that aspect. Thank you so much for posting this kind of content! Also shout out to your trainee. He took 3 different adjustments to his throwing form and made it look easy!
Appreciate it! Glad you're finding it useful, it's all about breaking down the form to make it easy to understand and adjust - feel free to send film over IG and I can review/give tips! And ye huge props to Julien :)
@@cchanulti ❤🔥absolutely will take you up on that!
bro says he’s a handler then immediately gets in the back of the stack first play 😂
LOOL gotta work on other parts of my game y'know :')
I’ve played games *in China* with fewer Asian people. Canada seems like a magical place
lol Toronto is a multicultural place :)
