    Thanks for this video! I removed my Thermal Regulator and the issue of "on/off" cycling was immediately fixed. I've got the new Thermal Regular part on order and will replace it. My question is why wouldn't I just leave the Thermal Regulator out all the time? As long as water is flowing through and heating what's the purpose of the part. Does the thermal regulator act as a back flow to stop water coming backwards through the system when the pump is off? Thanks!

      Great question. Sorry, I don't know the answer. I suspect is may have something to do with efficiency, but that is just a guess.

    My Mastertemp 250 would not even try to fire when turned on, straight to service heater light. Hot wired the switch wires and it fired right up. Ordered replacement on Amazon and was back up and running in 2 days. Thank you for the help. Your video gave me insight into what my heaters HLS system was looking for.

    Hello. I have an HLS light. The spa heats to approx 91, then shuts off for 2 minutes and comes back on for 90 seconds then repeats itself. The heater runs fine when I am in pool mode. I've replaced my thermistor, HLS and thermal regulator, and I still have the HLS light and all the same symptoms. No rattling or odd noises. It's a 3 year-old heater. Any ideas? Thanks

    So if it wasn't your thermal regulator. Then what was your problem with your heater. Mine is doing the same thing and I have replaced the regulator, gas sensor and HLS sensor to no avail.

    • @georgecox5297
      @georgecox5297 2 роки тому

      Same here. New manifold with new HLS, GSS and thermal regulator. Heater works fine without thermal regulator. Thermal regulator opens in very hot water. I'm wondering if it doesn't open at 140 degrees/early enough/proper temperature and that is why it still rattles and cuts off the system with an HLS error message. I'll check the temperature at which the thermal regulator is supposed to open and test with water at that temperature.

  • @evomatic

    Great video, I had trouble loosening the cap to replace the thermal regulator. Turns out a better tool (that didn't bend) and some two handed elbow grease did the trick (one hand twisting cap, the other on end of tool). The old regulator ended up getting stuck inside as I feel they make the clip ends a touch too long which catches on the inside threads. Took about 10 minutes of shimmying to get er out. Once out, the old one was indeed corroded and rusted. Guy at the pool shop had suggested doing the HLS switch first as that was the error code on flipside of panel so I bought both parts and did the HLS first to no avail. In hindsight probably should have tried the thermal regulator replacement first. Thanks again for the great video!

      Another thought, since the old one was corroded, should I have attempted to clean on the inside? Would have been tough to access in there but any advice on that?

    This video was very helpful. Now I need a little advice to confirm my troubleshooting. I removed the thermo-regulator and the heater stopped cycling on and off. I heated some water in the microwave and put the thermo-regulator in the water. It opened as expected. This tells me that the thermo-regulator is working properly. Am I correct to assume that the likely source of my problem is the high limit switch? Assuming yes, I can buy a new switch and replace the old one. Is there anything else that I may be overlooking? Finally, as a shot term solution, is it generally safe to run the heater without the thermo-regulator for a short period of time so my family can continue to use the spa until I get a replacement HLS switch? I would ask the same question about purposely shorting the HLS temporarily. Thanks in advance for any advice.

      You can test your HLS with a volt meter, set to check continuity and see if there is continuity between the two connection pins; if your HLS is good and your thermostat (thermal regulator) is still good but still having a problem it may be the Internal Bypass Valve has failed and may need replaced.

    I watched this video and then troubleshot my heater. I thought it was the igniter, maybe it still is so I ordered one. Then I got an air flow sensor fault so I ordered that. I removed the igniter while the heater was trying to light and it was red hot so I assumed it was good. I installed the new afs a minute ago and still no ignition. I still may need the igniter. What else could it be?

      Rats loved to get inside these thing. There is a rubber tube that goes from your afs switch to the fan area. If rats or anything chewed a hole in it, you can change the switches all day long but with a hole in the tube it still won't light.

    Hi - I wanted to say this video SOLVED my Pentair Propane heating issue and saved my summer - I was shocked when i opened my heater - We installed it 3 years ago on my pool - we never had one and we did over the liner and some retaining walls - we basically rebuilt our pool - but for 3 years this heater performed amazing and it died near the end of last season and I figured I would fix it next summer - I browsed this video and followed the steps - good thing I opened the unit to my surprise - Inside I found a nest of leaves and debris - man it looked like my new heater was rotting - then I opened the control box and found two dead chipmunks that chewed threw all my 24v wires - man What a repair - but the hardest thing I had was getting my igniter out - one of the 1/2' nuts lock froze and I had to break the post - I have a metal shop in my barn and quickly welded a new bolt to the hood and reseated the igniter - the igniter I got from Amazon and it came with a 1 time use only gasket (I thought it was like made out of cotton? seemed very flimsy but the igniter went in just like the video said - the unit was so cheap I saved a ton - the gas company was gonna charge me 250 to do the work I did it all in like 4 hrs - it was quite a day and I enjoyed a night swim with a warm pool - Thanks guys! this a 10 star! two thumbs up video - any DIY'er that owns a pool and propane heater should catalog and bookmark this video

    • @TheNYgolfer
      @TheNYgolfer 3 роки тому

      Installed a new Pentair 250 today and it wouldn't ignite. Checked for voltage to the igniter and got 60 VAC during the ignition cycle. Was going to condemn the ICM but fortunately I read the troubleshooting guide. It said "The ICM will convert 240VAC/120VAC to an intermittent pulse to the igniter. Digital meters don't read this type of signal well. Analog meters do a better job." The igniter was bad. So don't rely on voltage readings to the igniter.

    You mentioned in the video that cycling 3 times and kicking in the service heater light is usually a bad igniter, but what if it does that same thing but the igniter is good? I used my Pentair 125 pool heater 1 day and it worked fine. It fired, heated up to temperature, turned itself off. When the pool water dropped below the set point it tried to turn on and now I am getting exactly what symptoms you show in your video. I checked the igniter and I have 59.9 ohms. Gas pressure is good. I hear the 3 clicks in the gas valve but do not smell gas during ignition sequence. Any suggestions?

      The thermal regulators main function is to prevent condensation on outer surface of heating coils which causea them to rust. You can safely operate without one if you can manually close off inlet and outlet of heater via bypass valves if you have them, and manually reopen them before using heater. Pentairs newest version of their heater has the capability of automatically opening and closing of a bypass valve whenever the heater is operated.
