Underwater Photography Basics Part 2
We return to the ocean today to pick up where we left off after Underwater Photography Basics. (You can see that video here: ua-cam.com/video/9VdBfwE9_bI/v-deo.html) In Part 2, we’ll get up close with the largest fish in the ocean - the mighty whale shark - and see more magnificent creatures large and small. We’ll see the difference between wide-angle and macro photography, and learn the best way to position strobes to get clean images. We’ll also touch on some composition techniques to create spectacular photos.

    Hi! Im looking to do my divemaster soon, to get more experience diving and taking underwater video, maybe you have a tip where i can do it relatively affordable without sacrificing training quality?

    • @BDPhotographs
      @BDPhotographs 10 місяців тому

      Thanks for your question: I’m not sure where you’re based so difficult to answer… Training in the US tends to be more expensive than in Mexico or the Caribbean. Check with your preferred certification agency (PADI, SSI, NAUI, etc). Also, Divemaster is a professional certification and is often a step toward becoming a diving instructor. However, it is not necessary for underwater photography - diving experience is much more relevant than training credentials. Good luck to you!

    Great video Bob. It was a learning curve watching the same. I am travelling to Churchill this November and need some tips on the camera handling techniques. We will be doing a same trip moving around in a bus and not a buggy and if safe get down on the ground. This means quite often you will move in and out of the warm bus to the outside cold and back. Appreciate some tips if possible. Tks

      The key thing is to be ready for extreme weather and cold. Definitely listen to your guides - they know the area and the animals the best. There are advantages to having two cameras: a hand-held setup as well as a tripod setup. Backup batteries too and keep them warm. Enjoy your trip!

    Why does commercial diving is more money ??

    • @BDPhotographs
      @BDPhotographs Рік тому

      I don’t know if I understand the question - are you asking why commercial diving costs more? If so, the training and equipment is far greater than what is needed for recreational diving.

    You demonstrate the use of the tilt-shift lens (2:32), but the resulting image looks unnatural. The building looks like it's getting wider with height. Converging verticals is a natural component of perspective. Of course, some lenses exaggerate the convergence, but no lens should completely eliminate it.

      Hand and toe warmers! A good microfiber cloth for wiping down the lens if you get snow or if it fogs. I always bring a second camera body on trips as a backup. I did overexpose by about +1 or more when it was overcast and there was snow on the ground. Have a great trip!

    Excellent video, amazing pictures. Love the hammerhead close up and the final b&w. Since you mentioned changing sd and batteries during the surface time, how do you do that without fogging the housing? Do you use an expensive aluminium housing, or do you use anti-fog inserts?

    • @BDPhotographs
      @BDPhotographs Рік тому

      Very good question: I try to swap when out of the A/C and also give the housing an opportunity to adjust to the outdoor temperature and humidity. I just use a small moisture absorbing packet near the lens port.

    • @BDPhotographs
      @BDPhotographs 2 роки тому

      Nice - I’ve never used SeaFrogs in person so I can’t comment on the brand. I’d recommend a 16-35mm wide angle for general purpose underwater photo and video. Strobes depends on what’s compatible with your housing. Good luck!

    • @BDPhotographs
      @BDPhotographs 2 роки тому

      Sure - actually depends more on your diving skills than your photo skills -- the more experienced you are in the water will give you best results. You can always start with a Paralenz or a GoPro and work up from there. There are many good shark diving tours - depends where you want to go and what kind of sharks you want to see. • @BDPhotographs
      @BDPhotographs 2 роки тому

      GoPros are great for video (a lot of the footage in this video is GoPro) but not so effective for still images. So it depends what you want to do. Also factor in where you are with diving - new, intermediate, experienced, etc. If you think you’re ready for a compact camera and an underwater housing, I know some people who love the Sony RX100. Check out this article: www.uwphotographyguide.com/digital-underwater-cameras

    Beautiful images and video. I just returned from Tiger Beach and although I have some pretty decent material, I'm ready to upgrade. I'm shooting stills with a Cannon S110 however the housing flooded this trip so we're moving on. It takes a surprisingly good image for a $100 point & shoot. Someone recommended I upgrade to the Cannon G7 X Mark III as a nice upgrade while still staying in the point & shoot category. I shoot video with a GoPro 8. After running it through Dive+, I'm reasonably pleased but then I clearly see the difference with your content here. I'm willing to spend up to $3k. What do you suggest?

    • @BDPhotographs
      @BDPhotographs 2 роки тому

      Glad you went to the best shark diving spot on earth and I hope you enjoyed the trip! The challenge with underwater gear is that there is very little middle ground - you’re either spending $1K-2K or more than $10K because the housings and strobes cost as much (if not more) than the cameras and lenses. Ikelite makes the most affordable housings. I don’t have much experience with point and shoot but I know a few divers who love the Sony RX100 especially for video but also for the stills.

    What a awesome video, the quality is superb. Question: I’m starting with scuba diving, I’m taking my certificate and after a while I will start UW Photography, I already have a Sony a6000 with a couple lenses and my goal is to shoot still pictures with it while I record a video with a GoPro, do you think for a beginner like me would be enough? It will be a hobby for the weekends here in South Florida. Thanks buddy.

    • @BDPhotographs
      @BDPhotographs 3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and awesome that you’re getting certified. The tricky part with gear is that underwater housings generally are specific to the camera body and they are expensive. If you buy a housing for the A6000 it may not be compatible if you choose to upgrade your camera in a year or two. So I would say determine which camera body you’re going to commit to because once you buy a housing you’re going to be with it for a while. GoPros are great for video - I use them a lot. Good luck!
