Sri Lanka's Archaeology Department has blocked the development of the Aathy Iyanar temple in Vedukkunaari Malai, Nedunkeni-Olumadu in Vavuniya district. Residents had sought to worship and carry out building works on the temple on Vedukkunaari Malai ahead of the temple's annual festival from September 7 to 9. However, Department officials have informed Nedunkeni police that it would be prohibited and that residents could build a temple 400m away from the original site. Last month the Archaeology Department had acquired a large swathe of land in Nedunkerni which encompassed the temple lands and banned civilians from accessing it. Angered residents and worshippers protested against the take over last month, launching a demonstration outside the Vavuniya North Divisional Secretariat on August 21. Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP and media spokesperson, M.A. Sumanthiran has promised to take the necessary steps to help restore the full worship rights of Hindus in Kurunthur Malai, Mullaitivu. The native place of worship of Tamils located in the Thannimurippu area, has become a site of dispute after Sinhala Buddhists occupied it from Tamil Hindu worshippers. The temple is of historical significance for the Tamil people, but like many ancient monuments in the Tamil homeland has been subject to attack from Sinhala Buddist colonisation. Sumanthiran insisted that despite an agreement being reached with the Mullaitivu Magistrate's Court a few years ago, in February the Department of Archaeology, alongside State Minister Vitdyra Wickramanayaka, removed a Hindu shrine at the Kurunthur Malai Athi Ayan Temple and replaced it with a Buddhist statue. Since Rajapaksa has come to power, he has appointed a Presidential Task Force for “Archaeological Heritage Management in the Eastern Province”. This task force, comprised entirely of Sinhala council, has been criticised as a means of pursuing “state-sponsored Sinhala colonisation”. It has further been supported by extremist monks such as Panamure Thilakawansha who is placed to “identify and safeguard Sinhala-Buddhist 'historical sites', at the expense of Tamil or Muslim sites.” Thilakawansha is “notorious for his Sinhalisation efforts in and around Pulmoaddai, Trincomalee.”Residents in Thirukoneswaram accused Sri Lankan police officers of destroyed a granite Sivalingham statue on Thursday night, which was erected in the iconic Hindu temple just days before the celebration of Maha Sivarathiri. According to residents officers accused the temple staff of erecting the statue without seeking permission from the Archaeological Department. The statue had been erected in front of the food hall on the temple premises. Thirukoneswaram temple in Trincomalee holds a special significance to Tamil Hindus being one of the Chola era built temples that was celebrated in ancient Tamil literature. 🐘SRILANKAN ELEPHANTS.🐘 Sri Lankan elephants are sub species of Asian elephants. They are quite small in size and have small ears compared with African elephants. Srilankan elephants are native to Srilanka. They have quite dark skin when compare with other asian elephants. Only few Male elephants become tuskers in Srilanka. Majority of females haven't tusks. Ancient Srilankan kings tame elephants and use them in royal army as well as various festivals. Srilankan elephants are quite friendly with people and can tame easily when compared with African elephants. The Hurulu Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka is a thriving eco system with a variety of creatures. It was designated as a biosphere reserve in 1977. The forest reserve is a very important habitat of the Sri Lankan elephant.
