How To Grow Roses From Seed: Planting Seeds
I think I am confused. Did I understand that you said that you are leaving the rose leaves on the ground to see how resistant to fungus the seedlings are? Help me understand, if the leaves came from the seedlings and didn't show much fungus while they were on the plant why would going through a winter change there fungal resistance?
That’s a really good question! Although most of the roses in the test garden have shown to be resistant towards fungal disease, a few did end up getting a small amount of powdery mildew towards the end of the year (like most! 😂). I’m waiting to see how the roses do in the beginning of the year as they start growing. Hopefully that helps with the confusion, let me know if it did! I definitely see the confusion with how I said it!
Loved the tour thanks
You’re welcome!! I’m glad you enjoyed the tour, thank you for letting me know!! Happy New Year!
I really enjoyed the tour! Though most hosts offer punch and cookies. 🤣🤩Minus 15, ouch!
Glad you enjoyed the tour!! Next time I’ll have to remember the treats! 😂😂

@@country_zone6b I did! Ended up with 5 seeds. Hoping to get something very interesting with that combo!!
So does it mean we should take the seeds from the rose hips in spring instead then?
The best time for rose seeds to be collected is in the fall, when the rose hips are ripe. It’s necessary that the seeds go through a proper cold stratification process for best results. I just published a video on cold stratification for rose seeds that explains the whole process if you would like to see. Please let me know how your rose seeds do! I love seeing others enjoy this amazing hobby!!
Quit jiggling It is so distracting It makes me think of a movie long ago where Sally Fields begged,’Love me, love me’
I appreciate your feedback! This was my first video published here on UA-cam, and the nerves were very high, I imagine happens to most on their first videos. As time goes by, though, I have been getting more comfortable in front of the camera! Being able to share my passion and knowledge with roses to everyone has been so incredible! 🌹
can you just leave them on the plant until spring ??
Hey there! Such a good question! It is best to harvest the rose hips and collect the seeds inside for a couple of reasons: 1.) There are fibers inside of the rose hip, which can cause your seeds to not “cold stratify” properly, and acts as an inhibitor for seed germination. It is best to get the seeds out of the rose hips and clean/rinse the seeds to remove those fibers. Be careful with the fibers yourself, though; they can cause skin irritation, wearing gloves can protect you from possible problems. 2.) Rose seeds need to go through cold stratification, which means they need to be chilled for the duration of a winter. Temperatures of your refrigerator works really well. Rose hips left outside may not stratify properly. Too warm, they won’t stratify. On the other hand, too cold (freezing) can cause damage to your seeds. I recently published a video on cold stratifying seeds in which I show you how to stratify your seeds step-by-step. Feel free to check it out!! If you have anymore questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! -Jeff 😊
Which dish soap should I use??
I have good results with a mild soap-nothing strong or scented. Dawn is usually what I have on hand 👍
@@Therosedude thank you sir💓💕
You are more than welcome!!
I’ve been into roses for a few years now but this is the first time I’ve been seeing your channel on here. This is the third video I’ve watched of yours and it’s been helpful. Thank you!

Glad you found this useful!! Have you made any rose cuttings in the past?
@@Therosedude Yes, many!
@@RomeliaGomez-Calmell7934 very cool!! Would love to know how you go about making cuttings!
This is the best stratification video out there. Easy to follow, thorough, and informative. Can’t wait to get my hands on the seeds from you. p.s. I can’t imagine how messy it’d be if using vermiculite and perlite.
😊I’m glad you found this video useful!! You’ll have a blast with your rose seeds when you get them! And yes, even though the vermiculite/perlite works well, it can be a bit of a pain to sort through it to find all of your seeds. Please keep me updated on your rose seeds and how they are doing for you! I love following others’ journeys! If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to ask! 👍
Good thorough instructions. I've read using cinnamon on the seeds will keep the mold from producing.
I know cinnamon is popular for using on soil for a natural way to help with the mold/fungal issue, but haven’t tried with seeds during the cold stratification process. Would be a fun experiment to try! Thank you!!
great video! very informative.
I am so glad you found this video useful!! Hopefully you can get a hold of some seeds so you can try this yourself, it is an amazing hobby!! The first time you see a seed germinate and start growing, you’ll be hooked for life! 🥰
I’m so worried about my cuttings only about 9 months old. 😅 got them covered with plastic. Worried about the mother root.🥶hope she makes it for next year. So far so good. I expect to lose leaves but I don’t want the entire thing to die.
Yeah don’t worry if/when it drops its leaves..that is expected. One thing you can also considering doing, is placing your cutting against your house (if your cutting is in a pot), and protecting the roots by surrounding your pot with some kind of material (such as straw, bark, etc.)
I'll send Heat Miser your way!!! AKA Mr. Green Christmas!!
That would be welcomed!! 😊
Your roses look gorgeous and they're so healthy!
Thank you! 😊 it’s quite a surprise that they are still blooming like crazy I. The middle of December though! 😳
It is cold and snowing
Hope you’re staying warm!!! I’m right behind you with the snow!!
Yeah I am warm thank you
@ that’s good!! 👍
Has it started snowing yet where you live??
Oh yes not a lot. It's been really cold lately. I thought it was in the 50s the other day. It was absolutely gorgeous with the sun shining. I finally finished planting a few bulbs which I had to chop through the top frozen surface. Last week Lowe's had them half off.
@ it’s hard to pass up on those discounted bulbs, for sure!! Glad you got them all planted!
This is amazing info! I use wood mulch mostly but this year I’ve been trying to use leaves as mulch as well
Leaves work great as mulch! My last place I had a huge maple tree that gave a TON of leaves (plus a lot leftover for others). It’s a nice feeling that you’re able to recycle the nutrients directly back into the soil!
Love those pink roses!
Thank you! The lighting was a little wonky with these, so the true color doesn’t show, but this variety is called ‘Bronze Star’
@Therosedude thank you I'll have to remember that when I go shopping.
You’ll love it! I have been very happy with this variety!
YOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I didn't know you have a ginger beard!? Oh wait that's a rose!!! Great video DUDE! I barked all my new roses in front! I use grass as mulch in the back!
Haha yeah! I didn’t think that the rose woyuld have cause problems, that’s what I get for not checking! All the mulching had been completed so re-doing those parts of the video wasn’t an option! 😂 Grass clippings is also a great source of mulch as well! Just as long as the lawn hasn’t been treated with harsh chemicals- herbicides, pesticides, etc. 😊👍
@@Therosedude your video just makes you look human like all the rest off us Dude.🌹.
Thank you! Appreciate it!!! 😊🌹
This is so smart!!! I wish I would have seen this short before. I lost too many cuttings using the individual bottle method😢
It has worked very well for me! If you give this a try, please let me know how it works for you! 😊👍 glad I was able to help!
Just a thought why can't you just leave the rose hips on the bush and pick them in the springtime and plant the seeds. Would that work?
That is a really good question!! There’s a couple reasons why rose hips aren’t usually kept on the plant during winter: 1.) The fibers inside of the hip can inhibit seed germination and prevent a successful cold stratification. It is best to get those fibers off of the seeds prior to cold stratification. 2.) The weather/temperature outside during the winter may not be ideal for stratifying. Some climates may be too warm for the rose seeds to feel like they have gone through a winter. On the other hand, extreme low temperatures can damage the frozen seeds. Of course, there have been people that have had some success with their rose seeds germinating while being kept on the plant during winter, but generally you will have a higher germination rate if you harvest the hips and collect the seeds instead.
@Therosedude I'll have to watch more videos to understand what stratifying is. I will put mine in the refrigerator.
Stratifying is basically the seeds needing to feel like they have gone through a cold winter. The most common method of stratifying seeds is placing them in damp paper towels and placing them in the refrigerator for about 12 weeks.
I just planted some tulip bulbs today in a planter. I needed some more compost to put on top but it's too frozen. It is supposed to warm up the next 2 days. Hopefully to plant the rest of the bulbs.
I have one last bag of bark mulch that is frozen solid here as well!! When it thaws I can finally finish my mulching 😂😂
I put the rose fruits into the fridge without moisture and I had succes, but the seeds germinated after 3 months on the soil
Sometimes some rose seeds can take a while to germinate and start growing after being planted. On average, most seeds will germinate 2-4 weeks after planting, bust some seeds (like yours) can take longer than that. Glad to know that yours did end up germinating and growing for you! 😊👍
I really like ur videos. Very informative and knowledgeable. What type of supplies do u need for roses?
Thank you very much!!! As far as supplies needed for roses, what task are you wanting to do? Cuttings, seed growing, hybridizing, taking care of your roses in your garden, etc.?
@ Ur very welcome. Love all ur videos. I’m starting to grow roses myself, I love them and as well as all the different rose types there are and that grow different colors. Some, that are multicolored as well. But I’m wanting to know what supplies u would need as far as growing roses, till u would transplant in a garden. I just want to know everything u would need?
Sure thing! A good starting point that you’ll absolutely need to get started: *Pair of bypass pruners for deadheading, pruning, etc. *Fertilizer (roses are heavy feeders) *Watering can or hose, if there isn’t irrigation *Mulch for spring and/or fall There’s more that you can acquire, but these are the most important! Keep an eye out for more videos as I will be covering different topics and supplies that you can get so you can grow roses easily! 😊
@ Thank u… That is very helpful. I will definitely acquire all that. U r very helpful and I greatly appreciate it. I will definitely keep an ye out for more of ur videos. What type of soils do u recommend? Because I was thinking of starting out with, FOXFARM Light Warrior Soilless Seed Germinator Starter Mix.
That sounds like it would be a great soil for rose seeds! Has a lesser chance of containing bacteria, mold, mildew spores that could end up rotting the seed/harming the young roots! Also being soil-less, may be a good candidate for making rose cuttings in, as well!
are those pink snapdragons on the left?
Yes they are!! Such a fun flower! Grew these from seed for the first time earlier this year, planning on growing more from seed next!! 😊
@@Therosedude probably the tallest snapdragons i've ever seen!
They certainly grew really well this year!!
@@Therosedudeit's amazing how I've been seeing snapdragons this past month even with the cold Temps.
Can I prune back a stem with dieback? Or is it better to wait until spring?
Yes, anytime you have stems or canes that are diseased, dead, or damaged you can remove them off the plant! 😊👍
I love watching your videos
Thank you so much, I appreciate that!!!! 🥰
Excited to see your flowers in Spring! These are amazing tips friend😊
Thank you! Cant wait to be able to share them with all my friends here!!

Wow! Amazing, I need to try it!
Your garden will love you for it!! 😊👍
I think I had a early fall because my spring bulbs are already coming up now even the bulbs that have been placed 3+ years ago they usually really start to show out in January it’s also not just in my garden. It’s all over the neighborhood
Oh no! This year has had some really funky weather…hopefully you will get some blooms next spring..!
I wish chip drop would give me some chips I’ve not received any all year from them
Are you on a list and they automatically drop to you? Or do you have to make a request? Wish we had a service like that in the area I live in!
What if one lives in a tropical climate like the Caribbean? Can I plant the seeds anytime or should they still go thru the cold process?
Yes, you will still need to cold stratify your seeds before they germinate. But, given your weather, you can do this at almost anytime! 😊👍
Daughter tore all petals off her rose stem and of course, I dug it out of the trash lol. It doesn’t have the enclosed ball but the loose colorful seeds still. Any chance you know if I put that in dirt and outside - could it still get pollinated that way??
Unfortunately not. 😢 The flowers need to be on the plant itself after blooming to fully develop seeds (usually take 3-4 months). But if you still want to do a fun project with the rose stem, you could always try to make some cuttings out of it!
You are awesome!
Thank you so much! You’re awesome too!
Great tips as always 🙌
Thank you! Happy you found it useful! 😊
