    I think I am confused. Did I understand that you said that you are leaving the rose leaves on the ground to see how resistant to fungus the seedlings are? Help me understand, if the leaves came from the seedlings and didn't show much fungus while they were on the plant why would going through a winter change there fungal resistance?

    • @Therosedude
      @Therosedude День тому

      That’s a really good question! Although most of the roses in the test garden have shown to be resistant towards fungal disease, a few did end up getting a small amount of powdery mildew towards the end of the year (like most! 😂). I’m waiting to see how the roses do in the beginning of the year as they start growing. Hopefully that helps with the confusion, let me know if it did! I definitely see the confusion with how I said it!

    • @Therosedude
      @Therosedude 4 дні тому

      The best time for rose seeds to be collected is in the fall, when the rose hips are ripe. It’s necessary that the seeds go through a proper cold stratification process for best results. I just published a video on cold stratification for rose seeds that explains the whole process if you would like to see. Please let me know how your rose seeds do! I love seeing others enjoy this amazing hobby!!

    can you just leave them on the plant until spring ??

    • @Therosedude
      @Therosedude 7 днів тому

      Hey there! Such a good question! It is best to harvest the rose hips and collect the seeds inside for a couple of reasons: 1.) There are fibers inside of the rose hip, which can cause your seeds to not “cold stratify” properly, and acts as an inhibitor for seed germination. It is best to get the seeds out of the rose hips and clean/rinse the seeds to remove those fibers. Be careful with the fibers yourself, though; they can cause skin irritation, wearing gloves can protect you from possible problems. 2.) Rose seeds need to go through cold stratification, which means they need to be chilled for the duration of a winter. Temperatures of your refrigerator works really well. Rose hips left outside may not stratify properly. Too warm, they won’t stratify. On the other hand, too cold (freezing) can cause damage to your seeds. I recently published a video on cold stratifying seeds in which I show you how to stratify your seeds step-by-step. Feel free to check it out!! If you have anymore questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! -Jeff 😊

      Yeah don’t worry if/when it drops its leaves..that is expected. One thing you can also considering doing, is placing your cutting against your house (if your cutting is in a pot), and protecting the roots by surrounding your pot with some kind of material (such as straw, bark, etc.)

    Just a thought why can't you just leave the rose hips on the bush and pick them in the springtime and plant the seeds. Would that work?

    • @Therosedude
      @Therosedude 25 днів тому

      That is a really good question!! There’s a couple reasons why rose hips aren’t usually kept on the plant during winter: 1.) The fibers inside of the hip can inhibit seed germination and prevent a successful cold stratification. It is best to get those fibers off of the seeds prior to cold stratification. 2.) The weather/temperature outside during the winter may not be ideal for stratifying. Some climates may be too warm for the rose seeds to feel like they have gone through a winter. On the other hand, extreme low temperatures can damage the frozen seeds. Of course, there have been people that have had some success with their rose seeds germinating while being kept on the plant during winter, but generally you will have a higher germination rate if you harvest the hips and collect the seeds instead.

    • @di4085
      @di4085 25 днів тому

      @Therosedude I'll have to watch more videos to understand what stratifying is. I will put mine in the refrigerator.

    • @Therosedude
      @Therosedude 24 дні тому

      Stratifying is basically the seeds needing to feel like they have gone through a cold winter. The most common method of stratifying seeds is placing them in damp paper towels and placing them in the refrigerator for about 12 weeks.

      Sometimes some rose seeds can take a while to germinate and start growing after being planted. On average, most seeds will germinate 2-4 weeks after planting, bust some seeds (like yours) can take longer than that. Glad to know that yours did end up germinating and growing for you! 😊👍

      Thank you! The variety name is ‘Olympiad’ , a hybrid tea. One of my fave’s 😊 It is also one of my favorite pollen parents for when I’m hybridizing the roses 👍
