Merlin Finally Reviews Gloomhaven After Completing the Long Compaign
I actually completed the Gloomhaven campaign a while back but have been playing the expansion Forgotten Circles lately and realized I never reviewed Gloomhaven... perhaps I was waiting to complete Forgotten Circles too, but I really just wanted to get my thoughts out there on this huge campaign game. I will be doing a review soon for Gloomhaven Buttons and Bugs, so be on the lookout for that.

For Northwood is a solo trick-taking game that works well through using a system of precise bidding and player powers. Thanks. I have an arm that I connect to a tripod that extends over the play area. I am not sure if I will get around to doing a walkthrough for 2nd edition any time soon. A lot of the core gameplay is the same just with different rules for ranged attacks (including friendly fire), search rules, spawn rules being a little different, and of course with the powers and devouring not being there. It probably would not be too hard to read up on the differences and implement them when you have a solid grasp of how the Marvel versions work.

    The card symbols on the dice can make them successes if you burn cards?! I’m not sure how I missed this in the rules. To make 3s and 4s successful would have changed my plays so much! I basically have been playing on hard mode lol! Wow I feel silly.

    • @MerlinsManor
      @MerlinsManor 18 днів тому

      That is a huge part of the luck mitigation, and from what I've seen a lot of people who even know it exists ignore it too often or don't set themselves up to be able to use it (by playing cards with less than 2 cards left too often or when success is vital).

    • @MerlinsManor
      @MerlinsManor Місяць тому

      Yes, you must choose to sub in a ruler before you begin a round (conversation), so you should try to evaluate which rulers might be handy for the upcoming round... keeping in mind that if you don't wind up using the ruler, it will be wasted.

      I like them mainly for the addition of more Civs. The Arts and Architecutre probably adds the most game change with the added track and cards that trigger during income. I have only played with the track once so far but we enjoyed what it added to the game. I am not sure which one added it, but I also appreciate the added landmark cards to start the game and the new Capitol mats. Good picks. Our favorite hand management game is Century Spice Road or Golem Edition. It's deckbuilding adjacent if your whole deck were to be in your hand. I really like the balance between choosing to spend a turn adding a new card to your hand vs. playing a card that you already have to convert resources. Also, choosing when to spend a whole turn to pick up your discards back into your hand is often a very strategic choice if you are racing an opponent to have the right combination of resources first.

    I just bought the game and tested it solo. I watched a lot of reviews before buying and read some comments in the BGG forums. It seems that people are complaining, that the game is just too easy and basic. I completely agree. The game's a bit broken, but it also gives you freedom to create your own rules. I already implemented some changes, and it's become better. Some people in the forums have published their own house rules, so there's a lot of testing to do, but I believe the game can actually become good.

      Straight up Zombie game would be Zombicide Black Plague followed closely by Marvel Zombies.. I also like the Terror From the Grave Vignette from Final Girl. Then there is Dead of Winter and Tiny Epic Zombies.

    Nice video!! We love the skullport expansion to Lords of waterdeep!! I do feel that the corruption adds more in a larger game, when it is just me and my wife it is typically easy to manage getting rid of most of them. It is still a lot of fun too play.

    Can the final girl have 5 hearts?

    • @MerlinsManor
      @MerlinsManor 4 місяці тому

      The final girl can have up to the number of hearts on her card, which is 5 for Red, which is also her starting health. Keep in mind the black circle token counts as 1 heart towards this, so that is why there are only 4 red heart tokens (4 hearts + black token = 5 hearts).

    Honestly that's the only extension I didn't enjoy playing. Lot of those cards are just power creeps, too many "gifts" from the game (train tile card and reservation token, I'm looking at you) for no reasons imo. Potential game breaking combo everywhere, especially with the new player power introduced (Bees... seriously?). The game is not about carefully managing your resources but just getting the broken cards to destroy the game, for me it was a disappointment.

      It certainly gives the game a different feel... does away with the tightness that is typical with Everdell. It's not my favorite expansion, but I do enjoy it when I am in the mood for a point salad version. Spirecrest is my favorite expansion.

    I envy your organizational skills. For real tho, that looks perfect! And it totally makes a difference - makes me want to play a game right now. Cut to me opening up one of my games to see the mess of baggies... 😞

      Thanks. I find getting a game to the table and putting it away more enjoyable when a game is organized... but there is nothing wrong with the simple system of a bunch of baggies if that is what works for you. And there are some games I have that are just a bunch of baggies.

    Will those card boxes fit sleeved cards?

    • @MerlinsManor
      @MerlinsManor 5 місяців тому

      They unfortunately barely fit the unsleeved cards (at least depth wise). They might fit length and width wise... I don't seem to have any of the right sleeve size lying around right now to test out. If they did fit length and width wise you would need to get more boxes for the added depth, but I am not sure how you could fit an extra box or 2 in.

      The Amazon link for the card boxes is in the description. The Gamegenic Token Silo is probably better to get at Gamenerdz or another game store as they were more expensive on Amazon.
