I enjoy playing modern board games and talking about them. On this channel, I do Reviews, How-to-Plays, Top 10 Lists, go over Game Mechanisms, and more. I used to do cooking videos, and you can still check some of those out in my older videos.
Top 10 2-Player Only Board Games
In this list, I go over my favorite games designed for 2-players. While some have a solo mode, these games were all designed for 2 players with some having a solo variant (as it seems to me anyway).

In this video, I teach how to play Cryptic Nature multiplayer (which plays very similarly solo). In a future video, I plan to go over the solo mode, but it will not be a full teach, since most of how you play will be the same. Is Harvest the Cream of the Crop or Just Chaff?
Great video! Cleared up some questions I had regarding this specific scenario. I, however, think you scored incorrectly ecosystem 6. It scores 4 points per small purple animal, without multiplying by its innate value of 4. Should score only 4 points not 12. Thanks again.
thank you, that helped me a lot
You're welcome.
Thanks for including Timelancers in your list! If you are a backer, thank you! If not, DM us and we'll add you to the media list to send a game to!
I am a backer already. Thanks for the offer though... maybe consideration for a future game.
@@MerlinsManor Thank you for backing! And of course!
Thanks a bunch. I just bought this and still had some rule questions; which you answered. Awesome video
Thanks. Be sure to check the description for my edits for errors I made in the playthrough.
You shoul take a side effect card when you take a pill
You only take a side effect card if you take two or three pills at once. If taking a single pill, you do not draw a side effect card.
Very helpful ty!
I have the All-In Kickstarter of it, playing it tonight.
Have fun!
20:15 You cannot attack Dr. Death. He's still a victim (using a "special victim meeple"), and the Final Girl cannot attack victims. What you could have done is let the Ratchet Lady kill him when he was in her space some turns earlier. Because, again, he's just a victim so she can kill him.
Good catch. I must have been getting him confused with other special victim(s) that cannot be targeted by the killer and can be killed by you (such as the Loser Boyfriend from Wingard).
@@MerlinsManor Oh, right, the Loser Boyfriend exists. But I think it's the only exception (or one of the very few, maybe we'll see more in Series 3). Generally speaking, if something is defined as a victim, it's something the killer can kill and the final girl can't harm.
I don't think I have enough braincells for this game 😵💫 so many moves and effects and modifiers, I don't understand any of it lol
It is quite a lot at first. I was fortunate enough to have an experienced gamer help us learn standard Gloomhaven... and much of those things carry over for this version as well. Jaws of the Lion is perhaps the easiest way to learn Gloomhaven as it holds your hand for the first 4 scenarios (tutorial scenarios)... adding new rules each game. Still pretty complex to learn, but not as overwhelming at first.
Great game! Some mistakes I found: - when you discover the vehicle, you take the associated card in hand. - when the killer must be moved by an effect, you move only 1 Horde (the closest to destination).
Was there a special effect that I moved multiple hordes for? I believe standard movement in terror cards apply to all hordes, but if it is a special effect then just the closest horde. And yes, I forgot about getting the card to your hand when you find the vehicle.
@@MerlinsManor At 22:58, with the Terror card moving the Killer (meaning Hordes don't merge). Anyway, very good video. I like the editing and errors reporting.
@TonioLagoule ah, yes I see. You are correct. That was a major error. I will add that to the description.
When hatchling and someone dies are you not supposed to lose one time?
You are correct. I forgot this rule. To be clear, this only occurs when a victim dies from something other than the Hatchling itself, which did happen around 7:45 or so and I should have lost a time.
@@MerlinsManor Thanks. I have to say, this “film” is good, but the rules are not entirely easy to cover in total... For instance I also do not really understand: if the monster disappears because it grows to a youngling, the manual says: if the monster disappears, immediately end the killer phase. But it is imho entirely unclear if the Ambush cards are part of this killer phase or not. Because literally taken, I would disappear the youngling and not take an ambush card, because the Killer phase ended. I think this is not the intention though.
Hmmm... It's been a while since I have played this one, but I feel like I have interpreted it as not drawing a card the round it vanishes (not sure what I did in this playthrough). I could definitely see it being interpreted the other way though, since later it does say you skip the actions in the killer phase and instead draw an ambush card... but that could just be phrased that way to explain that you don't do the innate killer action or draw a terror card and not mean the Ambush card is not part of the Killer phase.
@ I think the expression of this rule is ambiguous. One could read it both ways I guess.
I've been looking all over for this game!
Thanks, cool review. In Germany the collectors edition is not available before July 2025, i think i pick the standard game and add the game mats later.
Okay. I'm 50 seconds into your video and cannot tell you how impressed I am by how clearly you set ground rules for discussing HOW you will refer to each game. Oh that everyone spoke so clearly and with such advanced forethought. Just wanted to tell you that I am grateful for the upfront effort to think through this. Awesome!
Thank you!
Great playthrough. Ratchet Lady has kicked my butt. You had much fewer maniacs than I did when I played.
Great review. It's definitely given me pause, as I've been itching to purchase this version for a while. I never considered the replayability, though. Dang. Indecision is my kryptonite. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Happy Gaming!
Thanks. I played it through and then sold it. That is always a possibility.
4 crossovers with my top 10 on my channel.
Cool!
This game sounds great but I'm starting to believe games should move away from using dice. The luck of the roll just leaves too much to chance.
I am totally fine with some luck in games, especially when it can be mitigated like it can in Final Girl. It can be frustrating when you fail due to luck, but it can also be very satisfying when you succeed and provides some added tension to games... but of course everyone has different tastes, and perhaps the luck involved in dice games just isn't for you... and that's ok. Plenty of games out there without dice.
Very cool video, helped a lot.
Thanks!
There are definitely going to be some big time crossovers with my list that will get posted next week on our channel. I think there will be some crossover with my wife's list as well.
Then you, sir, have great taste in board games!
Glad you enjoyed Harvest! -Trey
Thanks for checking out my video!
Natural resources only give points when surronded. Just 1 point here.
"Natural Resources: Players earn 1 VP for every visible Natural Resource that is adjacent to at least one piece placed on their map."
This video was just what I needed! I couldn't find anybody else reviewing each card! Great production!
Thanks!
Don't you have to be on spaces marked with the landmark symbol to collect a landmark? Also why did you not hike with the robohiker as the left side of the card marked that it hiked
I am not quite sure what you are asking. Are you talking about destination cards? And if so what do you mean by spaces marked with the Landmark symbol? Are you talking about the card icon on the hiking area that starts on day 5? If so, those are not there for when you can play a destination card, but for when the new color cards come out. If not, can you elaborate further? And as far as the second question I would need to know where in the video you are referencing to have an idea of what was going on.
Tiny Epic Gloomhaven ;-)
Yes... I thought about calling it that :)
I got this because I have tried gloomhaven but felt it was a bit much for me and really enjoy this bite sized scenarios that are quick and easy to set up. Great review!
Thanks!
I’ve had to resist this one so many times - thanks for the overview!
You're welcome.
When you place the first ocean for the bot, you didn't count the standalone ocean space with 2 plants on the right. Is it because it's on the map edge or you just overlooked that one?
Good catch. I just overlooked that space.
3:14 - No taksies-backsies! 😜
Thank you for actually explaining the leveling system.
You're welcome.
Do you think an expansion with more cards and tiles would fix the replayability problem?
It would. And if they added more lessons, they could use a module system like the original game or just say take out X amount of lessons. I'd also like to see Oshax if they wouldn't unbalance the game too much (maybe make them cost a fish to take).
Very cool video! We do have some games in common that we both play a lot (Cascadia, Wingspan, the Isle of Cats). I played Terraforming Mars Ares Expedition a few days ago but I didn't quite love it, it felt a bit repetitive at the end with me doing the same 2 phases over and over (Action and Production). Maybe cause it was the easiest difficulty. I also got the expansion since I'd heard it's better for solo but I still haven't played it. Also, I saw you have Dorfromantik Sakura behind you, I got it but haven't played it yet, how is it? Thank you and Merry Christmas
Terraforming Mars Ares Expedition is a game where the beginning focuses alot on building an engine through green and blue cards with red event cards scattered here and there and then by the end you really need to try to milk the benefits of the engine you built primarily through Actions and production (especially for the solo). Most of the fun comes in the engine building and then I personally find the overpowered ending rewarding from a well-built engine. Dorf Romantik is fun. It gives vibes similar to Cascadia when it comes to the matching of landscapes on tiles, but with the challenge being trying to fulfill tasks through matching certain amounts of terrain in groups. The game doesn't really have a win/ loss condition, but rather you unlock more challenges as you go... and the better you do the quicker you unlock new things.
@@MerlinsManor Thank you for the detailed explanation!
I was playing The Happy Trails Horror box while I was listening to this video and actually managed to win as Laurie on turn 3 by finding the axe, taking a hit early, and then finishing him off via Retaliate.
That sounds almost too good to be true. Guessing you found the axe on turn 2. What attacks did you do? I'm guessing mostly double successes too.
Fun idea for a video. My top plays are: 1. Terraforming mars -189 2. Splendor-88 3. Catan -75 4. Azul- 73 5. First Martian- 61 (almost exclusively solo)
Another TM lover I see. And I am glad you liked this video idea. I thought about doing one at the start of the year that is most played games in 2024, but concerned it might be too close in time to this video... but I did look at my list and there were only a few crossovers with my overall plays list, so it may still work.
Great video! Super cool
Thank you very much!
It's important indeed to emphasis the fact that victims are your currency. Both as a distraction, but also as a power-up. I ran a game last night where i had terrible luck; Laury's weapon was burnt with the normal bow because of the Fire card , and the terror deck was almost exclusively Hans' actions. As a result, we ran out of victims quickly, before i could even trigger my power, but i also ran out of terror deck, which means the final card enters play, and i'm the only one left. After just 2 turns , Hans was moving 3 per boot and stabbing for 4, twice (because of course he did). I died in one turn as soon as he caught me. Sometimes, your game will be unwinnable from the start.
I sometimes use victims as shields towards the end of the game. Works like an extra Guard.
@31:56 châteauma player should have sold goods when placing goats on county card which would have given him a silver coin totaling 3. He then would have spent 2 in black depot leaving him with 1. Also @47:40 you never replaced the county card when it was completed and played it twice😂
oops
Do you have the Giants expansion for Three Dragon Ante? Would be interested on the review with vs without expansion.
I have had the expansion for so long, but have not tried it yet. My friend has the expansion too, but we keep neglecting to learn it and add it. We keep saying we need to try it, but just don't.
- Vadoran Garden I actually got thanks to your playthrough, love it! - Also love Isle of Cats Explore and Draw, so much that I actually got the boats expansion - Cartographers love it, both the physical version and the one on Android - Diced Veggies seems fun, I saw on bgg it's possible to play solo, did you ever play it solo? - Welcome to... I have all the variants and also Welcome to the Moon, love it Another great list, thank you!
Thanks. I am glad you enjoyed Vadoran Gardens. I have not played Diced Veggies solo. I seldom play solo modes that don't come with the original game... though if I am not mistaken Diced Veggies is at least an official solo mode, so I really should try it sometime. Does it require anything extra?
@@MerlinsManor I haven't tried it as I donìt own the boardgame but I know it's indeed an official solo mode as you said and it doesn't require anything extra. Also, it's BYOS. Maybe someday!
- Love Trailblazers! Even though I'm so bad at it haha - Also love One Deck Dungeon but I've only ever played it on Steam. I may buy the physical version at some point. Great video for gifts ideas by the way!
Thanks. I am terrible at Trailblazers too.
@@MerlinsManor Haha glad I'm not the only one! And I haven't even started with the objectives.
Great video... Thank you for the thorough walk through!
Thank‐you!
I played final girl for the first time last night. I was so close to beating Hans. Saved 5 hostages with Reiko early on and brought him down to 2 health but some extremely unlucky rolling lost me the game. Looking forward to trying again this weekend.
Good luck.
Very informative video! I was curious about the board game as I've only played the video game. I'm also a little disappointed to here how Frost and Wrath work, especially Wrath. I love using Wrath and the risk and reward it carries.
Du you know if it wil get translated like all the other stuff
I don't know as I have no connection with the company.
Do you feel this is the Feature Film that feels most unique?
Probably between this one and the Organism... both feel very unique. Also, I would say overall Season 2 feature films feel more unique than Season 1. Each feature film has some standout mechanisms that set them apart from others.
Its so great to see the minis in this ! Really enjoyed this, and now going to have to look and see which other Final Girl expansions youve played!
I've posted videos for all of Season 2, North Pole Nightmare, plus Maple Lane, Creech Manor, and Terror From Above. My earlier videos had pretty terrible camera angles.
Thanks for sharing. What is the green box you have you eggs in? Do you have a link?
They are Stonemaier egg trays that came with Wingspan. Stonemaier now sells them on their webstore as part of a tray variety pack. I just repurpased them from Wingspan since I have the nesting box now for Wingspan. Link: store.stonemaiergames.com/products/tray-variety-pack
@MerlinsManor thanks
Oh man, Planning just gives you extra dice? I thought it gave you x number of automatic successes in lieu of rolling on your next check. Now it seems too expensive for what you get. Also one important note - spending cards for time has to happen *before* the action phase ends - you can't do it during the prep phase. So be sure to plan ahead for that before you play a card that could instantly end your action phase.
It's occasionally good for when you really need 2 successes... while it doesn't guarantee it, it makes it more likely. Also makes the cards with 3 success more viable. It is a bit overpriced thougalsot also works well with Heather's ability where each 5 or 6 rolled does a damage.
Thanks for playing and posting!
You sir got my subscription. I like your straight and very informative way of teaching. No unnecessary shenanigans at all. Keep it up! Thank you so much for posting this video.
