    I love Jorji. The one character where I don't like having to turn him away, but also not feeling that bad about it. When he appeared in my window and had all his documents in order, I had a big smile on my face. And then he proudly declared he was smuggling drugs and I face-palmed.

    The Lost Levels felt like the anti-Mario Bros. People often use 1-1 in the original SMB as an example of how to teach a player the basics of a game through its level design. That doesn't really happen here, because like you pointed out, they're assuming you've already played the original. So instead of teaching the player what to do, they force you to find your way through with trial and error. And even if you have played the original, they punish your prior knowledge of mechanics with things like poison mushrooms and invisible blocks. I didn't particularly enjoy this game as a kid, and over 30 years later, very little has changed.

    This game is so bad, Bowser's brother didn't return in the SNES remake. Also, you want to know just how bad the level design is? There's a pipe that takes you to an enclosed area. Thankfully, there's an invisible block that rewards you with a power up. UNfortunately, inside the pipe you just existed lies a Piranha Plant, and if you accidentally get hit by it, you are forced to die!

    This was my first starfox game and I remember the arwing sections and final boss pissing me off and not liking them, I still don't tbh. I couldn't articulate it so well back then as a kid, but the vestiges of the previous starfox games getting their tendrils all over Adventures really soured the experience for me. Even Falco showing up at the end - I only knew who he was because of Smash Bros Melee. If not for that I woulda been like "WHO???"

    I’ve played it. I do like it however I agree that the issue with it was that the traps and set ups just seemed to be there just because and had no rhyme or reason to be implemented. All else being equal I will say the SNES version is definitely better than the original Famicom 86 version.

    When I found out the international version of Super Mario Bros. 2 wasn't a Mario game at its core, I was conflicted. But over time, that confliction dissolved into appreciation, when I found out the Mario 2 Japan actually got sucks in comparison. And if it didn't happen, we wouldn't have Shy Guy's, Pokeys, Bob-Ombs or Birdo as staple Mario characters. Not to mention there's becoming more appreciation for Ninjis in recent years. I just wish they were actually featured in Ninja Hideaway in Mario Kart, over more Shy Guys.

    • @Oneiroclast
      @Oneiroclast 3 місяці тому

      That's only half the story. SMB2USA started as a prototype for a Mario game, focused on vertical level design and 2 player co-op. After a bit of rocky development, they repurposed what they had for Doki Doki Panic and put a B team on a sequel for the Japanese market. It was then restored to being a Mario game later, though the co-op aspect never made it into the final game. Of course, that's more complicated and less snappy than "SMB2USA isn't a real Mario game" so the inaccurate version of the story is what caught on.

    The lesson Nintendo learned from this and "other" supermario brothers 2 is to not take shortcuts by either rehashing or reskinning a game then calling it a sequel. 3 is the one where it all came together.

      Same. Although, I started with the All Stars version. But I have gotten a cartridge of the FamiCom version and enjoy that as an adult as much as I enjoyed it on SNES. I think this hard=bad mantra is kind of silly. Games get boring fast if it holds your hand. I find I get more for my money when I can't beat it right away.

    I think Nintendo made the right decision to release the version of Super Mario Bros 2 they did outside of Japan. Sure, it's just a reskinned version of another game and you couldn't do all the things you could in the first game, but it offered gamers a different experience than just "The first game but way harder." Plus, Mario 3 showed you could bring back the mechanics of the first game but expand upon it with new powerups, enemies and moves.
