Safely self-landing your kite in any conditions
would be great if you could demonstrate this with a strutless kite
Like a boss! 😎
holding the camera and flying with one hand made this look more difficult. Its a great way to land a kite
Been using this since you posted your first video. I am amazed at kiters, much more experienced than me, who don’t know how to safely self-land. Thanks for teaching me this
Because with a buddy it is safer and not harming your kite
Also if you know your going to self land - set your flag out line to the side your gonna land on.. Can be dangerous if the kite flags/rolls upwards and catches a line on an obstacle :)
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hey, is this working with kites that have the V high so that the lines dont split directly over the Bar aswell? Really was wondering about that.
beautiful bro. thanks for the content
You're welcome 😁, be safe out there
Like zeus from dimitri 😂
Very helpful. The best technique I've seen for self-landing. Makes all kind of sense.
Thanks, glad I could help
Decolagem foi sozinho
A memory I will cherish forever!
For me I think I would screw it up. Too much going on. I'd rather do the traditional drift launch with the lines connected
👍 Will you make a video of landing a foil kite in these wind conditions?
Thanks for sharing 🎉
As long as you check your lines when required, it looks good to me.
Ask any kite boarder if they've ever had a Charburger.
I like the diagram on the board to help your students visualize where to place the kite, and that you use a two-way radio for instructing on the go. No need to shout over the wind and JetSki. I’m a regular at the Skyway, so see you teaching often. Good job.
Hey Thanks I appreciate the kind words. Yes progression happens much faster using the radios for the students. See you on the beach
Great idea! I wish I would have learned this 10 years ago!
when you were reconnecting your lines, how could you tell which of the front lines are left and right?maybe i missed something. Are they colour coded?
It doesn't really make a difference which way you connect the front lines because you should have a swivel on your quick release that will separate the front lines
Good idea but there is still the ability to screw it up easy, but i like the way you uses a chesty to film the picking up the lines. I used to use a piece of foam with slits in it to keep the lines straight for kiting from my boat where I had really limited space to set up lines. Thanks for sharing your great idea, Larry
I believe there is a even better solution been using it myself for several years now with no issue ua-cam.com/video/9_FxYkg1vZc/v-deo.html
Nice!
lekker meneer. Dit sal baie help.
Interesting, I will definitely test this out over my next sessions! Regards from Uruguay!
So this only works with the safety line up? And what did you mean move into the wind. Like step upwind as you pull the safety?
Clever, thanks
Thanks for this. I will definitely try it.
What about the hassle to get the flagout line back in place again? Would it be easier/ faster/ more safe just to put in an ancor before going out?
all 45 seconds of hassle it takes to walk upwind, walk your line out and reconnect your safety?
That’s rad. Good looking out. 🤙🏼
so easy and yet useful thanks!
Yesssssssss!!!!!!
Sometimes there are beaches with sharp shells, etc. I always gently set my kite down on its wing tip first, then release. That lessons the wear and tear on your leading edge. ua-cam.com/video/uOv0WVd7WkQ/v-deo.html
Dale, you should add some of your fantastic music to the soundtrack!!
I give the lower hand a bit of yank just before i pull the safety, helps the kite turn toward the ground and commit rather than drifting back up. I’ve never had it fail. Your sorta doing it naturally anyway the way you send the kite across as u pull the safety. Ozone kite Australia has a good video as well
What would actually happen if your flag line was at bottom?
Hi, if you used the quick release with the flag line on the bottom then your kite will turn over the wrong way and it will land down wind of you. You will then need to make sure you retrieve your kite hand over hand along the flag line till you have control of the leading edge.
With a FOIL KITE the key point will be to make sure the flag line is on the bottom side, in opposite to a LEI kite. This is the safest option in strong wind without assistant (which would be always wiser) You may as well switch the front lines in order to accommodate landing to the most appropriate position on your spot😎
I’m work on the boat and I’m lunch kite every day I’m never think about revers self rescue, I have like 3 method for launch kite from the boat but tomorrow I’m try your one
EXCELLENT VIDEO - One of the best "how-to" kitesurfing video I've watched. Keep them coming - Subscribed!
And now in 30 knots and deep water
This is an approach that it would be best to experiment with on a light wind or no wind day and with a very small kite, kind of as a proof-of-concept. I tried it out on a light wind day, and followed all the steps, including doing a self-rescue with the bar on land before packing up the kite and taking it to my boat to a submerged island. After anchoring my boat, I pumped up the kite and flipped it over and started releasing the line off the bar. The kite started drifting downwind, as expected, and I got about half the line out when I encountered a small tangle as I was unwinding line off the bar. As I was sorting that out, the kite launched! It was at 12 o'clock, with half the line out, a tangle on the bar, and me in the boat. I've spent some time thinking about it and I can't understand how the kite could launch when the depower line was fully extended and wrapped around the back of the bar. I was able to get the kite back down by hauling in the depower line and then deflating it. But the moral of the story is that this could have been a very scary situation in strong wind. I could have been lofted, and the chickenloop would have been useless because there was lots of line wrapped around the bar. I would have had to release the kite completely off the leash.
Dangerous approach for stronger wind. Got into a situation once where wind picked up the kite before line was unwound off the bar. Bad situation! I suggest holding the kite and let all line out before letting go of bar.
If you do this technique properly there is no reason why it wouldn't work
I use this to also wash the kite but I put it against something like my truck. The sticks are a real good idea but the smallest breeze will start to move it. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Yeah definitely do this only on a no wind day
Were is the board???
So typically when you decide to do the self-rescue, your board is long gone. You're now in a life or death situation. One solution if you have your board with you is to detach your leash, pass it through the foot strap or handle of the board then reconnect to the flag line and begin the self rescue
Before you body surf in the kite I recommend to connect safety leash to the kite at the inflate connection for the pump and I would even disconnect the leash from the bar. This way it is less likely to tangle in lines and bridles and you won’t loose the kite when washed in waves. If you do a second video consider voice over to reduce noise. It helps all non native English speakers. Thanks for the video, looking forward for more.
you should actually demonstrate this technique in deep waters. no one needs a self rescue when they are waist deep.
This video was just intended to help beginner kiteboarders understand the process. I'll do a deep water self rescue demonstration one day soon
Hey Jason, although probably unintentional, your comment is misleading, as me being in the learning phase already encountered, I was in my learning spot that has a mile or two of waist deep water but there's also a deep canal for boats plus the site's no-kite-flying (you can't even body drag in or out) buffer zone (about 50 meters from shore) that basically forces you to land the kite in the water via safety release/self-rescue (excluding the kite-as-sail part) since you have to carry it to shore instead of landing it out of the water (unless you have someone to grab, hold and pass it to you, in the water, to be carried in-hand, out through the buffer zone).... So normally in that spot (or any spot with similar rules) by yourself at time of exit or an emergency, you need to recover the kite via self-rescue just to get out of the water... I also already encountered a sudden increment in wind speed where even the more experienced kiters were rushing to get out, that even in waist deep water, I couldn't prevent the kite from slowly but surely dragging my feet and therefore myself downwind toward the deep canal away from the exit path, so I needed to self rescue for a reason that had nothing to do with the site's rules... Then there's also the chance, that since this is a dangerous sport, you could get hurt but still be able self-rescue to recover the kite, regardless of water depth or location rules. So while its like orders of magnitude more difficult to self rescue in deep water, showing this in waist deep water lets you see better what needs to be done with the bar and lines.
@@Dembou23 This is difficult to envision what you're talking about without having been there. I don't understand why a beginner would be going a mile off shore but if there's a channel for boats that you crashed in, why wouldn't you just allow yourself to be dragged downwind into the shallow area rather than doing a self rescue? Also if there's a sign saying no kite flying 50m from shore you should just ignore it, that seems like a crazy time to consider a self rescue.. self rescuing is for emergencies. Your kite will always drag you downwind unless you are edging against it and going upwind - with a little more experience you will get the hang of this. Being in waist deep water is only going to make it harder to dig your feet against the kite and not get dragged, on solid land or while riding this isn't an issue. I still agree with you that it's useful to see the self rescue in shallow water but I don't think you should ever actually perform it in shallow water except for practice.. just relaunch the kite and either walk or drag back to shore, it'll be a lot quicker and suck way less.
Should not kite alone. This is a hard rule. Even when i was a windsurfer, that was the advice. However, i have more than once, ended up being left the last kiter on the water. Thanks for this video will give it a try.
I kite alone regularly and I agree there is always a risk, so always have an exit strategy and know your limits at your skill level
Can I try this with a foil kite?
I have not tested it but you could try using the quick release with the flag line on the bottom not the top and then walk your way down the line to get to the kite. Try it in very light wind first. Let me know how it goes.
@@SAKitesurf I did it several time with a large foil kite (15m2) with rather strong winds (20kts) It works quite well but you need large free room under the wind as the kite will move very fast from the side of the wind window to its center. You may try to run to a side position to limit the kite move. In addition with strong wind the foil kite will probably flight up and flap before stabilization, and you must go to the kite while fermly maintaining the front lines as it will not stay on land before being secured. Anyway it is more tricky that with a LEI kite which offers many other technics to self land, and stay on the landing position you choose!😎
Does it work with a 5 lines kite?
I have not tried this with a 5 line kite but my immediate thought is that it probably won't work as well as the 4 line setup. Because you need to flag the the kite keeping the flag line on top as you use the quick release
Guess this won’t work on a 5-line kite right?? (I have North Rebel 5-line) What do you think?
Hi Craig, yeah unfortunately I don't see this method working for a 5 line setup. I've always had low v 4 line rigging and I feel safer Kiteboarding with this system. Stay safe out there
