The new car eventually turns up, after nearly a year of patience!
First drive impressions with the 800Kg Parabolic Springs, which are surprisingly comfortable even with zero load on the back of the tray.
Fitted the new Maxxis tyres/Kings rims. Fitted towing mirrors. Fitted a dash organiser.

The ARB GVM upgrade to 3950Kg is installed at Jacksons 4x4 in Murray Bridge. Springs are 800Kg Constant Load Parabolics, with BP51 shocks all around. Also has ARB Air-bags, and a new steering damper fitted too.

The LC79 turned up at the dealer's yard today, which was a bit of a surprise (10 days early). Need to bring forward the GVM work if possible so it doesn't sit around at the dealers. Also, changed the way videos are filmed, from the 20 year old Olympus to my Samsung S21 phone. Sound is still not great though...

@ nah, you’re doing things called modifications, not building anything. A bit like doing some landscaping and telling everyone you built the house. Just another stupid word that’s turned up over the last few years

Love your videos. What TPS system are you using?
TPMS? I normally use the ProMata stuff with internal sensors, which has always been excellent, but the screen is a bit small for my old eyes. But this time I am using the Oricom system with internal sensors. It has a colour display which makes it a bit easier to read BUT the designers didn't try it with polarised sunglasses, and if you're wearing them, then the screen is just black. You can either turn it sideways to see things, or you have to take your glasses off :( But as a TPMS, it is pretty good.

@4bnewb969 Yes, I've got negative 5mm on the front and negative 25mm on the rear. I did another video about the offsets, but basically I've done it on the cheap by widening the rear axle 50mm overall, so I am still legal, and not too much extra loading on the wheel bearings. Having said that, on my Troopy I had negative 51mm both sides, to get me back to the same track as the front, but I was not legal. Never had any issues with the bearings, but it was a pretty light build, well below factory GVM.
@ thx for reply….apologies, after I posted comment I went hunting through your previous videos and came across the one explaining what route you took to help correct the track. I wasn’t aware the MDT tru-tracker had gvm limits. Nb the rims you chose look great!
I like your mods. I've found the MSA mirrors to be signicatly simpler and better view than Clearview. Looks like you didn't choose the electric option. That might be a mistake - you need to readjust the mirrors whenever they are fully extended. But if not towing, you might get away with it. I love te parabolics but not a fan of airbags - had a set on my HDJ79 in years gone by and they reduced the articulation by 110mm in total each side. Hope the ARB are better. Will be interested in your fuel consumption - reports coming out with the 2.8 auto show similar consumption to my VDJ78 manual. I think the autos always will suck a bit more fuel - especially offroad and towing.
@philg2468 I didn't go electric for the mirrors as it seemed an extra complication - fitting the switch gear and running the power etc. It only takes a sec to adjust them, so I'm happy with manual. As to fuel consumption, yep, not so impressed, although it is a brand new engine so it should improve a bit over time. I am currently getting 13.1 out of it with 700Kg on the back (that's from ~ 800Kms of driving so far). That's not terrible, but I was hoping for mid 11's. I reckon my Troopy was in the mid-14's to 15L/100Km so not terribly different. It's a bit better than the V8, but not significantly.
Nice rundown. I have a 76 on order, hopefully arriving first - second quarter 2025. One question, are they Old Man Emu parabolics?
No - they are ARB 800Kg 3 leaf parabolics. You have to use them with ARB airbags, but you can run the airbags at zero PSI. I had Terrain Tamer parabolics on my Troopy, and they were great apart from them squeaking like mad when they got sand/mud between the leaves.
@@spudboy1328 Yes yes that's what I meant, ARB / OME parabolics. How do you rate them compared to the Terrain Tamers? Personally I like they don't have the low hanging leaf, but unsure about the idea I have to install airbags.
@justinreeders2541 Sorry - I am an idiot! In my brain, I somehow read your Old Man Emu bit as Terrain Tamer. So far the ARBs have been quiet but it's only had light off road use so far. I loved how comfortable the TTs were, but the ARBs are equally comfortable. But I am super impressed at how comfortable they are given they are rated at 800Kgs. The Terrain Tamers were rated at 500Kg constant load so a bit lighter specification. I'm not too fussed about the airbags on the ARB. I will just use them if I have more than 800Kgs on the back which will not be all that often. But you can't get the ARB parabolics without the airbags.
@@spudboy1328 Yeh shame you have to install airbags with the OME. If I go parabolics I would most probably go the lightest ones possible as I won't often be carrying much weight. Not that these things flex much anyway, but do you think the airbags would limit what flex there is?
@justinreeders2541 You can run the ARB airbags at 0 PSI though, with no damage, unlike a lot of the other brands, so effectively they are not there until you need the extra load carrying capacity.
why a single cab mate? they are very uncomfortable when touring
I got it for the canopy mainly. The Jacksons Carry-Me-Camper is 2100mm long, and you can 't really fit it on a double cab - too much weight past the rear axle. So it had to be a single cab.
I had a single cab 79 before and now in a Troopy - I actually find them both good. The seats have been upgraded over the years by Toyota and are a lot more comfortable than the past. Can't recline the single cab seats much, but don't find thats an issue.
@philg2468 yeah - I reckon the new 2024 models have much better seats than my 2021 Troopy. I was going to get some Recaros, but don't think I can justify that, given how much better the OEM seats are now.

Look, the king wheel don’t have 0 offset for the front , it only has -5 for the front. Are you able to get zero offset for the front? Thx
You are correct - they are -5 on the front. If you want a zero offset front rim, then ROH do that in the Vapour design.

@espkh1549 I just fitted them yesterday (the -5 and -25 offset Kings Wheels) and they improve the look no end. You can't really notice the -5 at the front, so they look stock. But the rear looks a lot better at negative 25 and you can see the difference there. I agree with you about the -47 being too much. And they're not legal (in South Aust anyway).

I've done a partial axle correction on my Troopy. I prefer the 225/95 skinny rims and get 40mm of correction by using the factory P20 front 16x6 rims and P0 105 series rear rims (16x6.5). That way you don't lose the factory reliability, the spare is close enough to not be an issue. Never noticed an issue on sand but think its a touch more stable towing on the highway. With wider rims you can get various offsets - ROH steel for instance can use P0 on the front and P25 on the rear, so get 50mm of correction.
OK - I didn't look at the steel options. ROH in Alloy have -12 and -59, and I thought the -59 was a bit too much of an ask for the bearing offset. The King Wheel rims I ended up buying are -25 on the rears, so I'll get 50mm of correction.
I agree with you. Neg 59 is way too much offset considering every other rim on the planet is positive offset or zero. With the 70series you can break the axle housing at the U-bolts with any type of increased offset. You'll be fine with the Neg 25 on the rear.

UA-cam went a bit funny with some comments. This one got dropped somehow: @philg2468 - 3 minutes ago - Comments: #1 How big is the alternator? Running 3 DCDC chargers (25A, 30A and 50A) is more than I expect your standard alternator can handle. I personally would just have one larger Lithium setup in the canopy and skip the one in the cab. Getting too complex unless the canopy is removable. #2 A 25A DC DC charger pulls about 32A so a 40A fuse is the minimum. #3 I'd power UHF all the time. When travelling with others you don't want the radio to drop out everytime you stop. #4 Currently with my Troopy I have 2x200Ah Lithium, 40A DC2DC charger, 240W solar and a 3000W inverter. If I want 240V power to our caravan or Tvan I just run the 15A caravan power cord. It means the camper and caravan do not need large battery setups and the vehicle batteries are recharging everytime you go for a drive.
Hi - I think the alternator is 130A. The canopy is only on the vehicle when I go camping. And if I take the canopy I won't be taking the camper (that's for when the missus comes camping). So only one of those 2 circuits gets used (at the same time). I've just updated my master diagram with a 40A fuse for the 25A DC/DC - thanks. Fair point about the UHF. I'll think about re-routing that. I'm not having 240v in the canopy, but the camper has a 3000W inverter. It also has 1200W of solar, so it should be fine to re-charge without a huge load on the alternator. Thanks for all that feedback - much appreciated.

Multidrive also do a track corrected full replacement diff housing. I put one in my 76 series a few years ago as the standard 76 diff isn't suitable for the tru-tracker stub axle extension kit. The multidrive housing is remanufactured from a new 78/79 housing - extended and braced - think it has a higher load rating than the trutracker option. At the time it was priced between dwiz and jmax replacement housings. The multidrive housing looks kind of standard but beefier, the finish is excellent and it obviously corrects the rear track. Performance has been flawless.

all i did on me 76 was put a jmacx rear diff housing replacement and kept the leaf springs. fitted only cost me 7 grand. engineered might cost a little more but i have not been pulled over once in the 4 years iv had it and i doubt any cop knows what they looking at either. they more look at the 35s…
OK - I did a quote on the JMACX website, and it came out close to $18K I reckon, but that was with shocks perhaps. $7k is not too bad for the fitted diff. And I think you're right about the 35s!
Ive got the arb 3950 gvm upgrade. Best thing ever! With 800kg contants on the back, those parabolics are more comfortable than my coils up front. With the added bonus of the airbags to support heavier loads, its amazing. Also im booked in with multidrive for an axle correction. They offer a new diff housing correction for 3950 gvms so everything stays legal and the rear axles load ratings are good. Got quoted ~7k which seems reasonable to me...
OK - I didn't know they went up to 3950Kg When I looked into them it was the lower limit. Very reassured to hear you like the 800Kg parabolics. It was a bit of a wild card choice for me. I should get the car in 2 or 3 days, so I'll be able to see what I think pretty soon.
I would not bother with the cowfish 5G range extender. With starlink. Your telatra or optus phone will work fine, with wifi calling, texts, ect. Just mount the mini to the roof, But make it removable. So if you camp under a tree. It can be relocated for reception. I've been using starlink for 2 years now. It has changed my whole perception of remote communication. I will be removing my Codan HF radio. After 20+ years of loyal operation.
Interesting! The reason I got the CowFish is so I don't have to keep up the subscription to StarLink when we're not remote. I've already bought it, so I'll install it and see what I think. I've used Cel-Fi Go up in the mid-north of SA and it worked really well, and Cowfish is supposed to be better than Cel-Fi Go. So I'll report back once it's installed and I can test it. Cheers - David
@@spudboy1328 Now that Roam is only $80p/m for 50Gig. I have not suspended my Starlink since June. Not a huge data user when on road.
The 2.8 cruisers run too hot on the sand and when towing. Each cylinder has to work double the rate to put out same power as V8.
I guess we'll see. I've got a 2.8 Prado and uphill with a load the temps were getting high, so I fitted an oil cooler which has knocked 10 or 15 degrees off the temps. So I might have to do that again on the 79. Although I have read somewhere that Toyota put on a bigger oil sump and transmission pan (bigger than the Hilux?). So I'll keep an eye on it and see if I need to put on some additional cooling.
This statement is not 100% correct. Regardless of its size, the 2.8 is as good as the V8 if not better. The idea that each cylinder has to work harder is actually not quite true.

I've had a Jmaxc 4495kg for 4 years now. The coils are great. They now have constant load coils. So you do not need to put stupid amount of pressure in a Airbags. In fact mine weighs a little heavy. I have now the constant 800kg Springs. I have removed the Air bags as I don't require them. With 900kg on the tray it sits at the same level as the standard coil unloaded. Handling is much better. I would recommend without knowing your final weights. Doing suspension and GVM upgrades last. But I know this is now always possible.
Yeah - I had to decide on the 'system' before anthing was fitted, as it all had to be done pre-rego. So there's a degree of guesswork. I did a spreadsheet (of course!) of all the items I take exploring and how much they weigh, and which axle they sit over. On paper I'm pretty close to the front axle load limit, but I've still got good headroom on the rear axle. So we'll see how it looks when I put it over a weighbridge in a few months. On paper my GVM is going to be 3650Kg, so the ARB 3950Kg kit with parabolics seemed a safe bet.

Find my website by searching for David Deere and MAN and there is a contact email there, You'll have to do the maths for the rails for your particular situation, but it's not rocket surgery. That sounds like a sensible build mate. Got a couple of LC wagons sort of built along similar lines. The K.I.S.S (keep it simple stupid) system works well for me. Go for it! Lol.

@@spudboy1328 yeah, they look good but the money involved is huge for sure. I've done many trips into the outback though and have always gotten where I set out to go. The only thing I've done differently (other than the obvious) is I have got "33 mud terrains to make sure I've got that extra 10/15% more traction, been stuck with the all terrains a couple too many times. Muddies just get rid of stuff stuck between the treads much better. Noise? Oh well. Look after those rear wheel bearing! Grease, grease, grease, I carry a grease gun. Lol. BTW I'm in Adelaide as well.

@4x4smile We got out of it during COVID. The pricing was pretty favourable, so we moved it on and bought a Landcruiser 70 series with an AluCab rooftop. The MAN was fabulous for open country touring, like beaches and deserts, but it was way too big for smaller tracks, and anything with overhead branches was out of bounds. We did a fair bit of reversing back along tracks that turned out to be too small for us.
We had it for 8 or 9 years though, and saw a lot of Australia, especially the Centre and northern WA. Supremely comfortable, both for travelling and accommodation, but he was a big thing! You never could forget how big it was :)
@@spudboy1328 awesome thanks for the info. They look to give a comfortable ride, good amount of torque over the isuzu nps. Out of curiosity what l per 100 did you get. I'm pretty sold this is the solution to carry my jetski and tow my 3500kg van. Did you have anything big mechanically go wrong eg cv's? Watched pretty much every tgm vid on UA-cam and all I see is good things.
@4x4smile We got 24L/100 overall. On flat highways we could do 19L/100, but then in soft sand or hilly country I've seen 70L/100!
It was pretty reliable overall. We went through a few oxygen sensors, which clogged up on a regular basis. The biggest fault we had was on the Gibb River Road, where we got a gearbox fault. Thought we were going to have to be towed to Darwin (from Winjana Gorge). After a lot of SatPhone calls to our Adelaide dealer, and calls to Germany, we got a partial resolution that allowed us to keep driving. When we got back to Adelaide, MAN repaced the mechatronics unit on the gearbox (under warranty - was $11,000 otherwise!)

Well, you can get them but at the moment there is an 18 to 24 month delivery wait.
