How to Load a Kayak onto a Roof Rack
Music: "Orbit" by Bio Unit is licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0
All content filmed on an iPhone XR. Content edited using Adobe Premiere Pro.
This was a design project I was assigned in a Spring '21 eLearning Authoring course which was intended to familiarize the class with how to use Adobe Premiere Pro. Since the assignment was to create a "How To" video, I opted to create something to share what I've learned about loading my kayak.
Note: My crossbars have a rubberized strip so my kayak scooting in transit has never been an issue; however, not everyone has the same set-up. With that in mind, a super helpful tip from logmeindangit:
Make sure the kayak is farther away from the edge of the rack, so the straps go straight down to pass under the roof rack bar (not angled inward). If the kayak is so close to the edge that the strap has to go under the kayak at all to go under the cross-bar, eventually the kayak will move over and the strap will be looser.

Kracken isn't a fan of the vacuum. She especially doesn't like it in the hallway of her home.

    it is important to open the front door. .If the kayak slips it will knock off the side view mirror.

    Excellent instructional video. I have just fitted roof racks on my new Tucson and I am looking at how to put my kayak on board. I have just watched several videos on all types of attachments, clamps and other fittings to go onto the roof racks which were sort of costly. THEN I was fortunate enough to find and be amazed by your super fantastic video showing how easy it is to just put the kayak straight onto the roof racks. Whilst my Kayak is only small and easily able to be lifted onto the roof, the strap method between the bars is brilliant. The strap under the hood is another a great idea and is also reassuring for security. I am delighted to say that I am now confident to take my Kayak for a long awaited sail..... Cheers.

    The weight of some of these kayaks is intimidating. I try to lift one end in the shop and I'm like there's no way you can throw this on a roof rack 😂 great vid!

    This method is especially good for women who may not have great upper body strength. I just had to have my roommate help me get my kayak on the roof, but now that I've seen your video I think I can do it myself.

    Where under the hood is that strap anchored to???

    • @leggicoma
      @leggicoma Місяць тому

      Sorry, this likely isn't helpful for me to reply now, but I secured it to one of the frame-attached bolts under the hood. I know some folks are cool using the anchors that aren't affixed to the frame of the car, but I just felt a bit uneasy expecting the hood's weight and the latch to hold things in place.

    • @leggicoma
      @leggicoma Місяць тому

      Hi, thanks for the comment! I know what you mean--I sold a kayak to someone with an SUV recently and during the sale, helped her navigate loading a kayak onto j-hooks on the SUV. She actually came up with a clever solution of using a step stool (it was a bit wide for extra stability). She positioned it near the front tire and guided the front of the kayak towards the roof. It was a bit more challenging since it was being set on j-hooks. Since I was able to "spot" the kayak (in case it slipped down or over-balanced), she was able to load it to a point, then pause and see what it was meant to look and feel like and have some confidence making sure the kayak stayed balanced. If you're still working at it, I'd see if someone you know could help you out with a few "test loads". Good luck (and sorry for the delayed response--I don't really maintain this channel.. this was just a project I did for school)

    The only thing I'd maybe add... loop the tie down straps on the roof rack before you put the kayak up. Then when you push her up you've got the straps on the far side ready to pull over... I've seen folks put the straps on the front bar and lay the straps on the hood. Straps on the back bar and lay over the tail. Push boat up, slide boat over, easily grab straps and flip over and then finish your tie down.

    I bought an extra thick folding exercise mat and put that on the roof to load it.

    • @leggicoma
      @leggicoma Рік тому

      I've thought of doing that, but I was worried the car could get to hot and melt the pad during the summer--do you put anything under the pad, or is that an imaginary concern (I'm pretty good at inventing concerns)?

    • @Corkfish1
      @Corkfish1 Рік тому

      @@leggicoma I don't leave the pad on the roof ( although you could probably even use it instead of a rack) I suppose you could put a sheet in-between, but I don't think even on a hot day it would be enough to melt it.

      Exactly! There have been loads of times where folks are friendly and willing to help load/unload.... but sometimes there's no one around (or you'd just rather be able to take care of it on your own). Knowing that I can (and typically do) handle it on my own has given me a lot more confidence to go out.

      Hi, so sorry for not replying :( I'm using these in the video. I know tons of folks use ratchet straps, but since this is my first "baby", I'm a bit overly cautious and wanted to avoid the risk of getting it too tight too easily: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KGL9WL6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1
