I‘m thankful for finding this; yet, this is NOT a great example of football commentating. Let‘s see why: - First and foremost, big misjudgment of the first ten minutes before the 1-0 (even by Raphael Honistein at halftime). Vision might be blurred by the optical illusion of Brazil raising some fuss up front in the beginning, but no real danger was created. What IS true is that Brazil performed disastrously defensively (well, it‘s unthinkable even the worst commentator could miss out on seeing THAT), but how was this the case: by being too expansive all over the pitch (to a great extent caused by Marcelo‘s uncovered runs, but then, he is not the only one to be blamed), they conceded way too much space in the first couple of minutes already. So it was about a lot more than David Luis leaving his position so often. One could have seen that; well, Steve McManaman, co-commentating for ESPN, did: It was right BEFORE Kroos took the first German corner with the score still at 0-0 that he said „Brazil have to come a lot tighter, otherwise the Germans will cut them to shreds.“ So to those who could read the game, disaster was imminent from early on, no „good start of the Brazilians“ whatsoever. - Irritating clichés about the Germans: „calm/efficient/clinical“ all over the place, it‘s really annoying and those words don’t explain or prove a thing. As if the Germans had, in the decades after 1990, ever excelled by efficiency and clinical play. They didn‘t, AND their ways were lacking inspiration to boot!! Which only changed after Klinsmann/Loew took over in 2004. After the supporters‘ first spells of being in love were over, questions were raised about efficiency, with the German team usually going out in the semis (2006-2010-2012, being bereiten in the 2008 EC final): For the record, they had played brilliant, mind-blowing friendlies in 2011 against Brazil and the Netherlands, only to blunder another semi at the EC against Italy and to give away a 4-0 lead against Sweden in the autumn of 2012. Could they not play a bit more practical-mindedly, sacrifice SOME beauty for the sake of, well, efficiency, and just WIN? So efficiency and clinicalness had not been a trait of that side. What, after a long wait, 2014 brought about was the merging of the newly-found inspiration and creativity and the sheer ability to convert the chances that they created. The commentators of this radio commentary don’t seem to know a thing about this, it‘s a pity…!

Hey my friend! Thank you for all the European football over the last couple of weeks. I missed a whole week as was in hospital, now I have a long time to recover before I can go back to work… It's binge Time! Also, tootle as England manager? Not sure. Just an opinion… and a likely unwelcome one… but I definitely preferred hearing analysis and commentary from Marion and Pat last year during changeovers. The new format this year with more people sharing their thoughts feels way too crowded and actually interrupts feeling connected to the match. Outside of the play by plays of the principal announcer, what made last year’s radio experience so amazing was hearing insights and technical intricacies of certain plays from two former professional Wimbledon champions. Such an opportunity aloud for listeners to truly appreciate the grandness of the sport and what we were actually witnessing on the court. Please consider a return to a three person only commentary feature next year. Thanks for reading.
