How to make homemade gummy bears!

Making homemade gummy bears is a fun thing to do with kids. It's not expensive and the process is so easy that I could do it. You just mix the ingredients, place them in the gummy bear mold, and put the mold in the fridge for a few hours. Then you have homemade gummies or even a giant homemade gummy bear to enjoy.

As a 3rd generation DC resident (rare), few notes: 1. If you thought May was chaotic, Cherry Blossom season is worse. 2. George Washington’s Mount Vernon, south of Alexandria, is not on the Metro, but worth the trip. Not only do they maintain the mansion, but also many of the support buildings and the farms. They also have a very nice museum covering both Washington and the enslaved people who lived on the estate. 3. There is a 3rd airport - Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. It isn’t connected to Metro, but it is connected to commuter rail that will take you to a Metro station. 4. Beware of those intern lead Capitol tours. The interns aren’t trained for the tour and some of the “facts” they provide are incorrect. They do try their best and it is a great way to connect with your representative, but there are limitations.

Come in October, rent a car and go leaf peeping. Also go to Annapolis. You can drive to sites for a weekend or week in the periphery and be busy. Also see Mt. Vernon and Baltimore Inner Harbour. Most times of the year you can see sports between the. two major cities. Baltimore and DC are really a single metro area, but some cities were jealous so they stopped referring to it that way. BWI is also a DC Airport, especially if renting a car and there is bus, Marc train and Amtrak coverage. That lets you see Union Station. And then there's shopping...

DC Resident here - lived here since the mid-90s. Cherry Blossoms are beautiful and it’s a peak season for tourists because of them. So hotel prices will be higher and crowds are inevitable in late March & Early April. If you want to avoid crowds, Mid-October is best - too early for school trips, and most family vacations take place in the summer. And the weather is really nice in October when things begin to cool down. One more thing to check out are the two large Churches - the Episcopalian’s “National Cathedral” (not metro accessible) in NW Washington and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on the Campus of The Catholic University of America (Red Line: Brookland/CUA stop). Two more hidden gems are the St. John Paul II National Shrine up the road from the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, and the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land, about a 15 minute walk from the Brookland/CUA Metro Stop. And a personal plug here - come pray with the Benedictine Monks of St. Anselm’s Abbey celebrating its 100th year in Washington, DC!

I moved to the DC area in 2013. My wife took a job with the Executive Office of the President, so we were able to get easy access to tours of the White House. There are two you can theoretically get: The East Wing or the West Wing. Most of the public has done the East Wing tour and I think you can get access through your member of Congress similar to the other tours you mentioned. Maybe they don't do that anymore. Anyway, the East Wing tour has all of the paintings and historical rooms and is a longer tour and quite nice. The West Wing is literally just the Press Room and a small and cramped-feeling hallway that leads to the Cabinet Room, the Situation Room (which look like a normal office door), and the Oval Office. It was really surprised how small and brief it was. I think we were done in less than five minutes. However, it has all the stuff you associate with the White House so I remember it more fondly.

Enjoyed the video. We were in DC 2 years ago, and we're going back again in September. I knew from previous experience traveling there how to do a trip. I knew that driving a car in DC would be a nightmare as far as traffic, parking, etc. We flew into Reagan National airport, which was a good deal ($190/RT) from Indianapolis. Grabbed our bags, walked to the Metro terminal and bought 2 weekly passes, which work on both the trains and buses. Took the Metro and got off at U Street, and walked to our AirBnB rental. From there we explored the entire city, did many of the same stops and tours you mention. We're doing basically the same thing this next trip in September, staying at an AirBnB (much cheaper than hotel) and using the Metro. I found out about going through our Congressional Representative's office to set up tours, we're already booked for the FBI experience, and when we're within 90 days of our trip we can get booked for the White House. One word of caution - do NOT book a trip in October. The fiscal year for the federal government ends on September 30th, and given the dysfunction within Congress, there's a decent chance that the budget won't be resolved on time. If that happens, everything will pretty much shut down! Oh, and one last thing - a visit to the National Holocaust Museum is a must!

30 year DC resident, and you did a really good job of summing up what there is to see and do. Perhaps one tip to consider: hotels in DC proper (especially near the mall) tend to be double the price if just a bit further away. If you look on the red line metro in Maryland or the orange line in Arlington you'll often find much more affordable options. Yes, every season is peak field trip season but spring and summer are especially bad. Spring is all the middle school civics classes and they tend to just take over EVERYWHERE. Summer is more families, but then you have to deal with 90+ degrees and very high humidity. Pick your poison. If you have a choice, I'd recommend October...it's a beautiful time of year, less tourists, and tends to have really nice weather.

DC resident as well. To add: There are also cheaper hotels in Dupont Circle (red line), the FDR Memorial is a gem, BWI airport is a little further but a third option to consider, Georgetown is worth a stroll (brunch, Exorcist Steps, shopping,) the cherry blossom peak bloom is hard to predict and can change depending on a few good/bad days pretty easily (and crowded but very, very pretty.) The Air and Space Museum’s reserved tickets are probably due to its construction, as historically it has been like every other museum on the Mall. The Smithsonian Zoo is further north on the red line, but is free. National Portrait Gallery is awesome. Renwick Gallery is basically across the street from the White House on Penn Ave and is also part of the Smithsonian

Cherry Blossom period is crowd central, but walking around the Tidal Basin with thousands of people, including Japanese tourists, is part of the experience. Also, get Ethiopian, Korean, Peruvian, Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese food when here if you don't have it at home. All of it is authentic and there are tons of choices, especially in the suburbs. The Torpedo Factory and the Bethesda artists cooperative feature local talent. Amazing stuff. One thing about April; there are Cherry trees everywhere. You don't have to go downtown to see them. My condo has its own. Nebraska Avenue by the Japanese Embassy is planted with them. Drive through Beach Drive during the week. We also have a Zoo. With Dragons.

There are still White House tours. You just have to request tickets through your Member of Congress at least a month in advance. There are two times a year -- one weekend in May and October -- when you can visit the White House grounds and gardens, without having to get an advance ticket from your MoC. The National Park Service runs them. www.nps.gov/whho/planyourvisit/white-house-garden-tours.htm

You can still visit the WH but depends on your luck when you register and align with your visiting time. Sometimes they shut down completely, others it’s opened to public. Overall, not an easy process. Beautiful house to see.

If you're in DC, don't miss the Balkan restaurant Ambar in Eastern Market.

They also have a location in Clarendon (Arlington) if you don't want the crowds and wait.

Yea…don’t spend your precious vacation time in Arlington unless you are at a cemetery.
