Electro-Mechanical Shutter Prototype for 8x10 large format camera

A short video demonstrating the function of my electro-mechanical shutter control system. I used a raspberry pi pico to drive the shutter through a mosfet to control the duration of the shutter opening. This combination works well with two 9v batteries in series from 1/30th of a second to as long as needed. The next step is to design and build a power supply to be able to supply a high enough c...

    i recently acquired an Ica Nixe that uses a slightly different compur shutter (only has options I,B, & T, no Z, D, or M) i can't seem to get it to switch out of I mode, and also can't set the speed dial anywhere other than 1 or 2, wether the shutter is cocked or not. is it possible its just gunked up inside or did the previous owner damage something?

      If the dials are stuck, then yes it's likely very gummed up and some of the levers are seized in place.

    I’d be interested in one of those shutters to use a large aerial reconnaissance lens. Great detail here.

    one tip, for them, Don't have a long throw cable release, the cocking lever hangs up, it can't lock in the cocked position if the release(lever or cable in the socket) hasn't fully retracted.

    thanks, I have a lens with this shutter ( in a Linhof tech iii 5x7") different case and the t\b\m is a post in a slot at the bottom, but similar in design, one nice thing about them is that the lens screws onto a flange nut, which is permanently screwed onto the lens board, so it is easy to change board styles, from one make to another, without having the screwdriver tool for the lockring, the speed dial has a cylinder on the top, allowing one to push the lens in the tightening or loosening direction of the screw thread.

    Pretty cool, but it's hard to beat the venerable Packard Shutter.

      True Packard shutters are really nice shutters , though they do make solenoid operated version that this control could work with as well. Except the 120 volt AC one.

    Thank you Allen for taking the time making this series. Its been very helpful to me as I clean and repair this old 150mm f3.5 Tessar lens I have. Spanner head screws scared me for a second, but came out fine using the points of a compass. A loose screw holding one of the shutter blades was causing the blade to not fully close correctly, thus fogging my film. Should be back together again today. Thanks again. P.S. I’ve visited your website and really enjoy your photographs.

    hey Allen, is this shutter in the lens? or it is shutter of film camera? i didn't understand what is this shutter used for?

      It's a fair question. This is a large format lens with built in shutter. The camera it came on is a 9cm x 12cm folding camera.

      @@allensmithphotography okay this is photography only lens then. I was reading about zeiss planar that had compur shutter and they removed that shutter to mount it on film camera. i was thinkinh why would they put shutter in a lens?

    • @allensmithphotography
      @allensmithphotography Рік тому

      Sorry for the late reply, but the shutter in lens was the first steps to integrated shutters. They were made for faster media like film and dry plates in large format cameras and were adapters and evolved into compact and folding cameras.

    at the moment I am trying to repair an Goerz Dagor in its original Compur, it looks like yours. I noticed that it is not possible to move the shutter blades at all, the inner ring the three shutter blades sit on ( at 01:04 ) is different than on newer Compurs, it seems locked in place. And this is the problem, on newer Compurs this ring is movable, so that the blades can actually shut or open. I wish you had close up videos of all the parts and its' locations..😀

    • @allensmithphotography
      @allensmithphotography 2 роки тому

      I can certainly see what I can do to get more detailed footage. Though the shutter blade ring is still the part that moves with the older compur shutters. The big difference being they will often lock in place to prevent unwanted opening

    • @ast3663
      @ast3663 2 роки тому

      @@allensmithphotography the odd metal ring does not move and it is screwed/secured down with that three tiny spanner screws (you remove in your video part 1 at 26:20 ). how does it move on your shutter at all? it should move easily on a 1/250 th speed ..on newer Compurs this ring is of very different material and it slides easily inside the case.

    • @allensmithphotography
      @allensmithphotography 2 роки тому

      @@ast3663 the screws do hold it in place but they allow enough clearance that it moves freely. It is a close fit but moves easily in my shutter. It's quite possible in yours that the lubricants have dried out and are sticking the actuator ring in place

      That's awesome. I'm hoping, with a better power supply, to get to 1/125th of a second. But with this type and size that's about the limit due to physical limitations of the solenoid.

    Hi Allen Smith, I checked the dish and the emulsion is like yesterday a little sticky, it never seems to dry completely, what could I have done wrong? i use bloom 250 gelatin.

    • @allensmithphotography
      @allensmithphotography 2 роки тому

      Most likely it just needed a gram or so more gelatin. When doing silver emulsion, you mix the halide salts with the gelatin and then mix in the silver nitrate solution to sensatize the emulsion. After letting it mix you add additional gelatin to compensate for the added liquid. I'm sure a similar addition would be needed with dichromate as well. At this point the only options would be to strip the emulsion and recoat the plates or let it sit longer. If you have a fan you can put a filter onto, you can use it to blow air over the plates. That would help them dry. But only put the fan if you can put a filter, otherwise you can get dust inclusions

    • @henriquesantos.official
      @henriquesantos.official 2 роки тому

      @@allensmithphotography So I'm going to throw the rest of this emulsion away, and today I'm going to make another one using this recipe from a different tutorial I found on google, which says to use: 100g of distilled water, 12g of gelatin and 3g of dichromate. What do you do to prevent bubbles in the liquid emulsion?

    • @allensmithphotography
      @allensmithphotography 2 роки тому

      @@henriquesantos.official hopefully the new recipe works better for you. As far as preventing bubbles, I don't usually worry about it until I coat the plates and at that point any bubbles showing on the plates can be popped

  • @henriquesantos.official

    Friend, after you coat the gelatin emulsion on the glass, does it dry overnight or does it have to leave it for several days? Because I did when I took the glass a day later, it was sticky and not dry.

    • @allensmithphotography
      @allensmithphotography 2 роки тому

      I leave mine for about 24 hours and it's dry enough to put away in the fridge. It may be that where you had yours was too humid and may need a bit more time. Because the emulsion should be leathery after a few hours unless there is too much moisture in the air or maybe some got into your emulsion
