What is a good rod and reel for $400 that is good for chasing fresh water Barras when the season opens I'm probably gonna come in on Saturday
@@Theaussiefishingkid I’d reckon an Atomic Arrowz in the 10 to 16 pound range, and an ABU Revo X will get you a nice combo spooled with 20 or so pound braid mate. I’ll be in on Saturday to. 👌🏻
Do you ever keep any to eat- Great Video mate. Cheers Denise- Brisbane
Awesome video mate, what rod were you using with the Atomic plastic
Where can I buy the atomic jigheads
@@BenWilliams-ey3df we sell them at the fishing warehouse in Townsville mate. Most of your independent stores should have, or can at least get them in for you hey. 👌🏻

@ Brisbane ,
@@joshparry2867 it is good up here mate, but I lived in Brissy for a few years and caught some of my biggest ever Jacks around that place. Same sorts of techniques. In winter I used to go down to three inch flick baits and 1/32 ounce heads and still manage the odd one over 50cm hey. There is obviously more people there though and I wasn’t keen on that bit. 😜🤦

Lovely ep and spots guys, I ve caught Jacks from Noosa river right up the east coast to the Cape around the Gulf and Nhulunbuy to the Kimberly, It must be me but I do not like them to eat, Id rather eat a grilled sea mullet,
Thanks mate. Yeah they’re awesome hey. I used to chase a lot as far south as Coffs Harbour and heaps around the south East QLD Rivers. They’re just special fish mate. 😜 nothing wrong with smoked Mullet either. I did an episode on that when I was doing a TV series many moons ago. They’re good chewing. 👌🏻
@@hodgiethebarefootfisherman8393 No worries
Good video mate. That fingermark was a bloody cracker. In January this year after the floods, it was near impossible to get away from the barras hey, even chasing big queenfish on the king tide i must have got 20 solid barra. There was just so much bait and whole tree snags in the open water, they were bloody everywhere. Good to see, but hard to avoid.
I thought it was closed season, you don't appear to be doing anything different.I must be missing something.
It’s closed season for barramundi. There’s no Mangrove Jack closed season.
Plus Hodgie targets the jacks 90% of the time. Barra is just a bycatch but all get released in closed season and I can’t remember the last time I seen Hodgie and Tannhum even keep a barra even in season
@@tonywiseman7542 Jack season is what many refer to the jack fishing when the Barra season is closed, that’s all. Maybe I should have called the title something else mate, sorry if it’s confusing hey. 👌🏻
@@benny82ish Yeah, you’re on the money mate. Even in Barra season we mainly chase the Jacks. Cheers mate. 👌🏻✌🏻
In some fishing scenarios do you crush the barb's??
@@TheJeepman1983 yeah sometimes in closed season mate, as it doesn’t matter if the Barra’s throw the hooks hey. With the Gamakatsu hooks they have a very small barb, so usually come out quite easy. ✌🏻👌🏻
Thanks for that
Hey Hodgie, great video. What is the line rating of the refraction rod you had on the steez i think it was? The one you said was the best casting rod out of the lot, Thanks.

Jack time 👍🎣
Hey Hodgie, is there much difference in the casting action of the new vs old 5’6” 12-16 Samurai. Cheers
Yeah, a tiny bit mate. The cast tends to load the rod a fraction lower in the blank which makes it that bit better for the lighter lures. 👌🏻
So true
@@kenslade31 🤙🏻
Man Hodgie, you know how to go out with a bang..great session!! Now you two gotta put your acting hats on and pretend you hate it when Barra hit while you're fishing for jacks😜
@@stevehershberger2672 ha ha ha. Yeah I know, I know. 😂😂Thankfully the ones we hit in the snags are the smaller models hey. Those bigger ones out in the open water and deeper holes are the ones that we steer clear of. They reckon they reabsorb the eggs back into their body fat if hooked and stressed from the fight hey. That’s like, a couple of million fingerlings each big fish, so bugger that. The, cranky little blokes in the snags are enough of a surprise on the light gear 😜👌🏻🤣
@@hodgiethebarefootfisherman8393 I never knew that about re-asorbing the eggs when stressed. When you learn something, its been a good day...thanks.
See you on Monday mate!!! Making my way north tomorrow!!!
@@LAchilles cool mate. Look forward to catching up hey. 👌🏻
Good fish mate. At least you didn't forget the reels, I've done that before haha. Those new Refractions are unreal hey. I've been running the 5ft6 12-16lb Refraction and a 6ft5 3-8lb reaction for the last few months and they're bloody incredible. To be honest that reaction is the nicest rod I've ever used. Good video mate, bring on 2025 season hey! 👍🎣
@@Jake_UpNorthFishingAdventures yeah mate the 12 to 16 is my favourite accuracy short range rod hey. Got the new little Reaction spin with me today to chase a Jack hey. It’s a sweet little thing mate. 👌🏻
Mate i agree with you completely, i personally think they should raise the morning minimum size limit for bullsharks and promote catching and keeping sharks. And on the plus side they tast great and if you dont like the tast you can turn it into fertilizer or pet food
If you don't mind could you make a video showing catching and cleaning a shark would love to know

@@Jake_UpNorthFishingAdventures ha ha ha. Don’t know if it’s faith, or if I’m just used to getting hooks out of myself nowadays. 🤣🤣
@hodgiethebarefootfisherman8393 haha good onya mate. I can still feel the spot where I got my first bite from a treble arm . It's even better when the fish goes spastic while the hooks in 😎
@ ha ha ha. It happens mate. If we play with sharp things eventually we’ll get stuck hey. 🤦👌🏻
Gday Hodgie love the vids mate bloody top shelf. How do you reckon that 16-40lb Samurai would go on XL murray cod ? Cheers
@@deanarnold6933 they’d be spot on mate. Depending on the size lures your chucking, there’s a smaller two models also, which I reckon would have been right up my ally when I was living south hey. 😜👌🏻
@ yer I was thinking for large swimbaits and surface lures mate …. How’s the action ?
@ the two lighter ones are a faster taper, but he big one I’d say would be more of a swimbait, bit plastics etc rod. 👌🏻
@@hodgiethebarefootfisherman8393 legend 👍thanks for that mate
hey mate whats the best 3 lures for barra?
Mmmm. All round Barra casting snags hard body would be the TB 80. Weedless would be the Atomic Prong and Paddle Prawns. Trolling would be the Halco Scorpion 90mm 4m bib and Poltergeist 80. More than three sorry mate. Vibing would be the Atomic Semi Hardz. Wow, three only has got me stuffed hey. 🤦🤔
I've watched your channel for years Hodgie, and especially enjoyed watching the dynamic between you and the young fella morph from teacher/student/dad/son to just good mates enjoying a flick as equals. You done good!

I can’t get anything to smack a hardbody at the moment. (Tho haven’t tried the TB80 yet) might have to come grab a couple. Been getting plenty of big jacks in the mid 40s on paddle tail plastics. Especially them MMD Fat Skippers in white. I run em on a 1/4oz 5/0 J style TT. Though not fishing as much of that Ho Chi min lookin mangroves you boys are hitting. Love the vids Hodgie. So informative and detailed mate. Keep em up.
@@benny82ish Mate, they’re great fish.😜 I find the J heads fine on the outskirts of the snags, but when you’re right up in the thick stuff, weedless definitely helps us snag less. Try the 5/0 1/4oz Atomic Seekers when ya get a chance with the screw in spring in the nose. They’re our favourite but hard to get at present mate. 😉👌🏻
Umm..how do you know of the dog act with net on snag?? really?
@@Adamhere27 it’s a common practice mate. I know plenty of ex pro’s that used to do it. Big bunched up snags like that don’t just disappear and the stumps left where they’ve been snapped off give it away. Often bow marks in the mud too mate. It’s the fact that the snag gets destroyed that pisses anglers off. 😉
Good one lads! Ive been looking at the sugar minnows, always thought they looked good. Might have to get a few on the next round ! Cheers Hodgies 👍🎣
